Jackie Wilson was one of the Top 5 greatest performers OF ALL TIME....PERIOD. No one had better moves...stage presence...vocals...you cannot name ANYONE better in ANY of those areas. Wish he would get his proper due, but true fans of music and performance KNOW.
Please let me know if there is someone better than Jackie, because I can't believe there is. Also people need to remember that this was 1973 and yet by all accounts by people who saw him live, he was something you had to see to be believed back in the 50s and 60s - wish I'd been there but I wasn't born til 1968. Keep spreading the word about Jackie to people who don't know. You're right, other singers had certain great traits - but Jackie had EVERYTHING!

The criminally underrated Jackie Wilson. Every time I see a clip of him performing live, it just absolutely blows me away. He had it all. Incredible showman, astounding vocalist. Soulful improvisations just flowed effortlessly out of him like water. He could take a pop number and bring the entire crowd along with him to church. Nobody could touch this guy in a battle of pure talent. To think he came to such a sad and inglorious end. It makes me mad. The guy should be celebrated in some greater way.
Absolutely Simon nobody could touch him he was like one of his album titles "Somethin Else" Like you said he could take a pop number and take the entire crowd with him to church, he must have done 3 or 4 encores in that show the crowd wouldn't let him offstage they were begging for more !!

@@Arrozconchopsticks Elvis sees Jackie. The Dominoes played Las Vegas as a lounge act, and part of their entertainment menu included their own renditions of current hits. Jackie had a go at several Elvis Presley numbers, and guess who ended up in the audience four nights in a row in November, 1956? Right. Elvis. A few weeks later, Elvis, sitting in the Memphis studios of Sun Records with Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, and Johnny Cash, describes the performance of a “real slender” “colored guy” (“a Yankee”) who is “one of Ward’s Dominoes.” The conversation, along with Elvis’s demonstration of Jackie’s interpretation of the song, is preserved on the recordings known as the Million Dollar Quartet sessions. Note that Elvis says that the singer is doing a “takeoff” of him. I hardly ever hear that term anymore, but it was common in the Fifties. Rather than being an impersonation, a “takeoff” indicated that an artist approached something by adopting and adapting someone else’s performance: starting with an exaggeration, perhaps, of some features of the original, then proceeding to improve on the original, making the performance unique.

His vocals were so powerful, and he came at a time where reverb and echo system wasn't really a thing in live performances yet. So he was able to project with a regular mic. Amazing vocal technique.
I have listend to Jackie EVERY day of my life since 1960 except for a 3 month period when I was in basic training at Ft. Ord, CA. Never get tired of his music... NONE better.
Few entertainers are better in person than on their records: James Brown, Gladys Knight, Michael Jackson, Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston and JACKIE WILSON! Spectacular!!
Elvis # 1 And the rest follow and they all knew it... Though he was more humble than people realize as was Jackie Wilson and Sam Cook... They admired and loved Elvis and he admired and loved them equally... He felt Jackie and Sam should have been more recognized and more on top and have what he had but all lost their opportunities in some ways due to management and Music industry control... Micheal and Prince and others fought it Sam became an incredible business manager and then was shot... They all died too young and is tragic what the stress strain and entertainment industry does to our incredible stars and talents... All had it tough in one way or another... Even Judy Garland and Marilyn Monroe and others... All were great in their own rights and amazing talents... So tragic in so many ways... They will always be remembered loved and appreciated by me and most of the public... I just hate when the criticisms and attacks still come out of people in media and such that attack their character and lives when they are only human even in their greatness and Stardom...
@@janice5528 Elvis learned from the same place Jackie, James and Sam did - Black Gospel Music pioneers. All of them were raised in the church and saw gospel music in its infancy and the pioneers were building the genre in the 1930s and 1940s. So as children singers like Elvis and Jackie imitated what they saw and heard in the church on the secular stage.
@@JudahCub1981 I know that... I have learned so much about Elvis and others but he is always my favorite singer, Star and humanitarian, great man...So much to know, and learn about him of his short 42 year life. He was an avid seeker himself studied much, even about people's, faith, religions, music and many genres, how to improve his own voice and grow... If only he could have stayed away from the dependance of prescription drugs...He would have grown even more than he did...But fir what he did accomplish was truly amazing, magical, phenomenal and beyond what one could dream... Jackie was so underrated, and was so fantastic, and so great on and off stage till, if you would compare him with those of his time, you would just say aahh, what is this man!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Elvis must have envy him!!!!!!! Reality is a mother f#@ker, and I GIVE notice that Jackie Wilson, was on top of the call in his era!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (O- SO- GOOD!!!!!!)
I've seen him live when he was younger which gives you an idea how old I am (70). He was towards the end of his career on this video. Sill good but yall should've seen him when he was younger.
You can see he was a big fan of Elvis...and Elvis was a Jackie fan too. Looks like he used Elvis designer for this outfit. He looks amazing. He had the habit of taking a handful of salt pills and lots of water backstage before he went on. He said it made him perspire big time and the ladies loved it when he was wet with workout sweat. Could possibly have been part of problem the night he collapsed on stage. We sure missed him over the years. Just a big shame....wish he had known he had Bobby before he died and able to meet him. Loved him in 1960...my favorite performer then. ⚘🙏⚘❣
Jackie was incredible, a wonderful entertainer. Many hit songs. It is unfortunate that during that time most artists of color were managed by the Brunswick Label. They owned Jackie lock, stock and barrel. On his records that came out they had down their 6 wk old son as the producer, another relative as the song writer. This company made millions off these great artists back in the day. He made millions for them and died a pauper in a seedy, nursing home, penniless. Michael J. was kind enough to buy this great a headstone for his grave otherwise no-one would know who was buried there. He gave us so much pleasure but they just used him up. He died in his early forties, I believe. All that singing and dancing took its toll on Jackie! He was entertaining ppl towards the end just to survive money wise!

you are right! he was a fantastic singer and gone way too early he had a great voice
What a fabulous entertainer. He hasn't had anyone compare with him all of these years.
Understand and amen
Wow, that's too complex for me!
I was 20 years old in 1973 ,I remember him very well.
In a league of his own....no one even comes close to the talent and dynamism of Jackie Wilson.
Phenomenal performance, nobody compares to Jackie Wilson!
Fantastic performance, nice to see that everybody was just enjoying the music.
I wish I could have been there.
He will live infamy and eternity God Blessed us with Elvis.🙏💙🎶👑💞💖
@@janice5528 Elvis is not number 1. Hahaha that's funny tho
@@finderkeeperrrs Yes, he is. The most reputable artists have stated this. Stop being hateful.
I've s seen a lot of performances from the 70's, but I've never seen anybody getting down like Jack did here.
I totally agree
John F wonderful
Jackie was so underrated, and was so fantastic, and so great on and off stage till, if you would compare him with those of his time, you would just say aahh, what is this man!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Elvis must have envy him!!!!!!! Reality is a mother f#@ker, and I GIVE notice that Jackie Wilson, was on top of the call in his era!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (O- SO- GOOD!!!!!!)
i love this guy,soo much....we need more of this stuff, more videos friends, pull them out of those closets
Too right. We've had compilation DVDs of everybody but Jackie and yet he's the greatest!

Yes, let's get EVERY piece of footage on youtube for the world to see!
I just saw Jackie's son the other day. Bobby Brooks Wilson. Amazing. Like watching Jackie.
Jackie Wilson was a star, and he really loved his audience.
I've seen him live when he was younger which gives you an idea how old I am (70). He was towards the end of his career on this video. Sill good but yall should've seen him when he was younger.
Was he ever aware of what happened to him ? Or vegetated state?
You can see he was a big fan of Elvis...and Elvis was a Jackie fan too. Looks like he used Elvis designer for this outfit. He looks amazing. He had the habit of taking a handful of salt pills and lots of water backstage before he went on. He said it made him perspire big time and the ladies loved it when he was wet with workout sweat. Could possibly have been part of problem the night he collapsed on stage. We sure missed him over the years. Just a big shame....wish he had known he had Bobby before he died and able to meet him. Loved him in 1960...my favorite performer then. ⚘🙏⚘❣
....Simply beautiful ❤️❤️❤️❤️💙💙💙💙💙💙💙🫂🫂
A legend. No one has had or will have the voice and style of Jackie.
In 2023,
ABC ought play this concert in full.
Michael Jackson didn't buy JACKIE WILSON head stone, please do your (RESEARCH)!!
Sad the. Record company's did that to many artist
MICHAEL J ? FOX?

Thank you for posting this LIVE performance of "Mr. Excitement" from the early 1970's. All of Jackie's fans are waiting for the movie of his life and career.
WOW!!! They didn't call him "Mr. Excitement" for nothing.
Jackie Wilson's showmanship and stage presence climaxed @ the 11:10 mark.
Voice of Gold ! Gone to soon.
My mother and her 5 sisters saw Jackie Wilson when they were young. They talked about his show all their lives ...may they all rest in peace! I can certainly see why. Fantastic performer grossly underrated!!
True that...Think Elvis tried to even sound like him...listen close.
This performance was at the famed Santa Monica Civic Auditorium 1973 none other then Art Laboe was the MC.
@@keithchanner Interesting Fact . . . According to Wikipedia, Art Laboe is an American disc jockey, songwriter, record producer, and radio station owner, generally credited with coining the term "Oldies But Goodies". (As of March 4, 2021 Mr. Laboe is still alive at 95 years old!)
