JACKIE WILSON was the greatest and deserved a band like the "Funk Brothers" backing him at a first class venue as a superstar in Las Vegas again at this point in his life .

Excellent !!!!! Here's proof that even in his early 40's, Jackie "Mr. Excitment" Wilson still had the energy, charisma, and showmanship to entertain a LIVE audience. No lip-syncing, no autotune . . . just pure talent. BTW, it was very eerie at the 13:15 video mark to see Jackie fall backward and continue to sing his classic "Lonely Teardrops". Thanks, Mike Bollea and the Little Walter’s Time Machine Official Archives for allowing us devoted fans a chance to see and witness the stage presence of Jackie Leroy Wilson.

That was no fall..he did that often in the act, just wasn't as smooth as it usually is...seen him dozens of times...always great!

At times i forget that Jackie Wilson was one of the first famous singers to comeout of Detroit, before the artists who signed to the Motown record label and before Aretha Franklin Franklin and Iggy Pop and countless other Detroit artists who came just after him in the 1960s.

Thanks for posting this. Jackie was one of the greatest performers to come along in our time. Also back in the day....I used to tape on my little Radio Shack cassette recorder as many of Little Walter's Time machine shows as possible when he had his show on WBCN.
I had them stored in my Mom's basement, and someone stole them all at some point!!

He looks like a star athlete at the peak of his game. He must have worked out and trained for hours weekly, and more....to be in this state of prime shape and health. Flawless vocals. How could his fortune flip so drastically within the next couple weeks?? Real tragedy, like few I've heard of.

A couple of wekss earlier, August 29, and 30, 1975, I saw Jackie performing in Las Vegas on a concert tour Dick Clark was promoting. Also on the bill, The Coaster and Dion. There might hav been other acts on the bill, but I only went to see Jackie!
On the above video, something doesn't sound right. His voice is toto 'high"....never heard I'm sing in that high pitch, and I've seen him approximately 150 times since my first time seeing him in 1962. Wait---he's smoking a cigarette DURING his performance, AND still hitting his falsetto? AND dancing!!? MAN he was a talent!! But, on the flip side ( as it occurred 2 weeks later ), this was also one of the reasons he had a massive heart attack. Health is wealth. [ Musician ] Prince could dance his azz off in high heels....jump from risers and into splits. But, his body paid dearly, for it.
I know Jackie wasn't in his prime, thus the mixed billing and club touring. He had bills to pay, I know (regardless of his health). But, man....health truly is wealth.

Awesome artist. Something was "off" when he appeared to briefly lose control, collapsing to the floor at 03:16. A sign that he was already at the door of a medical crisis. Of course, we know he never returned after the heart attack. And, by contrast, many years later, Wilson's cousin, Levi Stubbs, also left showbusiness after he suffered a stroke. Neither of them ever returned to the stage. Great talents and sorely missed by family, friends, and fans. R.I.P.

I forget all of us in the band and the artist himself we would all use these little black pills called black Betty’s, because I was playing in James Brown’s band, and when we were not on the road, I would run over and travel with Jackie. These little black pills would lift you up and energize you, even if you’ve been in a car for 20 hours trying to get to the venue. Once you had Betty inside you, you were definitely ready for the world!

Jackie Wilson was stretching himself out very hard between being in financial ruins, owed the ceo of Brunswick records. Vanderpool didn't take care of Jackie Wilson like he needed. Jackie needed rest. But Dick Clark paid for Jackie Wilson's hospital bills until the day Jackie Wilson died in 1984. Michael Jackson paid for his funeral.

As amazing as he is, I would've loved to see him perform his more recent material. Songs like "Because Of You", "Love Uprising", "I Get The Sweetest Feeling", "Nobody But You", "It Only Happens When I Look At You", "Don't You Know I Love You" etc. I get that those weren't hits, but they would've fit so well in a concert setting. He was so much more than his early 50s hits and Higher & Higher. Also the band just doesn't really hit the spot, it's a little "meh". He deserved better backing. Maybe it's the subpar quality that makes it sound a little weak.

The shock to me is that he was only getting $4500 for 2 shows. Whereas Elvis was getting $100,000 a night for a much less dynamic performance. Jackie was even more badly mismanaged than Elvis was. Such a shame.

Elvis played the Detroit Lions stadium and filled 120,000 seats , no one before or after could do that. He and Jackie were friends and respected each other unlike you. Elvis promoted Jackie more than his manager Tarnapol and introduced Jackie to many venues his manager failed to do. Obviously you’ve never seen Elvis live ! Extremely dynamic , no artist to his day has drawn as big an audience worldwide. Biggest bragging right is Elvis house outdraws more than most artists today. And don’t cry racism, cause in Jackie’s later years his audiences were heavily white , it was the young black generation that didn’t appreciate what a great talent he was. Even James Brown said and was criticized for the truth saying, “every great black entertainer must find a white audience eventually because young black and even older only follow contemporary artists “ yes, he said that. James also said “ black radio will claim artists like him and others were victims of racism but unlike white radio ( who’ll have a day dedicated to Elvis music ), black radio will never do that for people like himself or Jackie etc.”
