  • This is a sub (just) $1,000 camera with kit lens; a micro four thirds sensor; and it's not sexy. So why does it blow me away (and it does)? It's the small things - and for street photography, when paired with the Leica DG Summilux 15mm f/1.7 it's a compelling alternative to my just-announced best street photography camera/lens combo ever, the Sony a7R III with Sony/Zeiss 35mm f/1.4
    Really.

    What's new with GX9:
    - EM shutter
    - no AA filter on sensor
    - 5-axis Dual-IS
    - triple IS for video (IBIS, OIS, digital crop)
    - video IS lock
    - L-mono/D
    - 4K stacking (light/sequence comp)
    - (Compared to GX85) Better sensor and manual controls
    If none of these things matter to you, then yes, no reason to switch from GX8/80/85. Also, if mic input/twisty screen are really important to you, you're probably in a different market than the GX9 intended. I think the branding/naming strategy led to a lot of confusion.

    I moved from GX85 to A7m3. I loved Voigtlaender, I loved Zuiko, I loved Panaleica, I loved the ergo. I was so shocked when I moved from 5dm2 to GX85. I didn't know about how good the mirrorless was. I still misses that shock. A7m3 is good and even it would be the best camera. But it can't match how I felt when I first met GX 85. Thanks for your video. Your video is so insightful.

    Greetings, Hugh! As a Fujifilm X-T3 landscape and product photographer, I am extremely pleased with the image quality I get from this camera, combined with the stellar, sharp Fujinon XF optics. However, I am researching a small, light "travel camera", as I don't want to expose my X-T3 system to the vagaries of landscape photography in a beach/ocean setting. For that very limited, occasional use, I was considering such cameras as the Sony a6300, Canon G1X Mark III, Panasonic Lumix LX100 II, or Sony RX100V. (Though I hesitate to go m4/3 due to my large poster printing needs.) My MAIN criteria are image SHARPNESS and detail retention, and ability to retain such detail when possibly printed to 20x24". Plus, I'd like to keep total budget to below $1000. And, FYI, I'm a 100% stills guy, so don't shoot video. Based on this, which system would you recommend for maximum sharpness/compact form factor? Thank you sir!

      Three Blind Men and An Elephant Productions Will do! I know it's going to be perfect for me, because it's basically a perfected GX7. & I LOVE my GX7! But it has a few issues that the GX9 has fixed, can't wait!
      It's funny, on the Lumix GX series Facebook group, the majority are GX8 owners & fans & majority are crying about the GX9, saying how bad it is, so much of a down grade from the GX8. & In some ways I can understand. But I never like GX8, because of its size, no built in flash & didn't like the screen articulation.
      But the GX9, it's the Perfect upgrade from the GX7 :D

      I've had the gx7 since it was launched abd have a love/hate relationship with it. For stills it's great, especially in monochrome. But I use it mainly for vids of me or my duo performing our own songs. It has a beautiful filmic look but the focus breathing or hunting can be a real issue unless i put the lighting up, which kind of ruins the mood.. I've just added a sony zve10 to my budget set-up (i also use the dji pocket 2) and whilst there is no focus problem , i can't reproduce that look i get from the panasonic. On top of that, the menu system on sonys is horrid and the flip out screen is useless and only partly touch sensitive - i had to buy one if those portkeys external monitors to use with it. Maybe I'm doing something wrong in the settings with the gx7. I shoot in a slightly dimly lit room abd only have the pancake 20mm 1.7.. Do you have any tips for me? Maybe I'll grab a used gx9 if I can't find a fix and sell the sony..

    The lcd screen for the Gx9 has a higher resolution than the Gx80/85. Does this make it easier to use for stills, without using the EVF? I am considering one of these two cameras for street photography and the Gx9 fits my specs in every way so I'm just curious if you can do street shooting just using the tilt screen and focusing with accuracy. I am tossing up between one of these small Panasonics or investing in a Sony A7III but the Sony screen has low res so I'm assuming it would be difficult to shoot using screen only? FWIW I'm currently using an iphone 7 plus (and previously Leica cameras).

    The GX9 is the true successor to the GX7. The GX7 was a great popular good value camera and for many GX7 owners the GX8 was too large, too expensive and it's pull out twist screen is not as well suited to from the hip street shooting as the gx7 tilt screen.

    The Lumix 12-60 is actually a really nice lens, light but well made, nice and sharp. Only 'suffers' when handled alongside the PanaLeica version of the same zoom range, which does indeed feel a step up, as it should for the mighty price difference. Although initially disappointed by the GX9 spec (should have improved over the GX8 in every area) I do see it as a fine camera, truly the follow up to the GX7. But it makes the 'humble' GX85 look very very good for the money. I'm happy with mine.

    I'm considering getting this as a second camera to go alongside the G9. When it is available as a body only option.
    Oh, and I was wrong and you were right about the size of the 4/3rds sensor being the same as a 110 film neg. I finally got hold of some 110 film and almost but not quite put it on the sensor of my G9- same size. Not sure why I thought the sensor was bigger than the film but there you go.

    I have watched many of your videos and appreciate your information and your video style. I wanted to purchase a rangefinder style camera to use for street photography instead of my Olympus M5 Mark II and M1 Mark II. I decided against the Fuji X100V because it has a fixed lens, against the Sony Alpha cameras because of their ergonomics and larger lenses, and against the Fuji XE and Pro because for some reason they just have not interested me, even though I appreciate their design goals and lens system. I decided on the Panasonic GX8 over the other Panasonics, because it has a great electronic viewfinder, 20 MP, in-body image stabilization, a back screen that can flip around and close into the body, an audio in jack, a larger grip, and the shutter button out on the grip instead of up on the body. It does use lenses I already have some of, but that was not a deal maker or breaker for me. Thank you for your videos.

    Your delivery is wonderful! I‘ve had the gx7 for years now and am looking for an upgrade. I just bought a used sony zve10 and apart from the terrible menu, it is a right old struggle to match the creaminess of my 2013 panni that is there almost straight out of the box. Granted, there are some focus issues with them but with a bit of tweaking, it can be worked out, at least with regard to my music videos that I post from time time. So, I think you have just sold me on the gx9 even if you posted this 6 years ago. Sometimes specs do not tell the whole story.Btw, your intonation reminds me of Jeff Goldblum - hope you don‘t mind me saying so..

    • @3BMEP
      @3BMEP  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gabriela Lamberti the simulations are ALWAY JPEG. I recommend shooting RAW+JPEG when shooting simulations/styles because then you immediately have the shot you imagined SOOC plus the full color, in processed “digital negative” if you change your mind or have exposure issues. The L-Monochrome-D is outstanding.

      @@3BMEP THANK YOU so much for taking the time to answer. It's much appreciated. In your opinion, Pammy's M43 camera and glass is not too much behind Fuji's APS-C's ecosystem? I am a bit concerned with low light photography... the IBIS of the GX9 is appealing, but the Fuji 16mm f1.4 and 50mm f2 lenses are really tempting...

    • @3BMEP
      @3BMEP  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Christophe Langlois I loved the X-T2 with 56/1.2 and 16/1.4; impressed by their red badge zooms and the X-H1, X-Pro2 and X-T3. It I could only have one system for stills and video for personal work, between the two I’d go Fuji. But if I could only have one system for professional work, for now it would remain the Pannys - but that is because they have no recording limit, better battery, better rear panel (again, for what we do) and better internal video recording options - and superb AF is not our biggest issue. The 24mp X-Trans sensor, however, is definitely better. If I were only shooting stills, I’d go Fuji.

Fuji X-E3 is cheaper with a lot of amazing glass. Personally, I wouldn’t choose it. I think it is most interesting for GH5 users as You sad.

    Usually I agree with you but this time I simply cannot. Though I haven't held the GX9 based on specs and images I can only say I am heavily disappointed. I really love my GX8 and was looking forward on how they would improve things on the GX9 but all they did was take things away.
    Weather sealing is gone which is a shame. The lovely deep grip of the GX8 is gone too. The flippy screen which to my own surprise I use quite a lot (even when shooting still) has been removed. Okay, they finally solved the shutter shock issue but that is the only interesting improvement over the GX8. I seriously wouldn't swap this for my GX8 if I could do it free of cost at my local camera shop.

    • @3BMEP
      @3BMEP  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'll be more precise: for a given field of view, a larger sensor requires a longer focal length lens. This in turn means for a given field of view and given aperture, the resultant image by virtue of distance from subject will have a shallower depth of field with the longer focal length. Saying that all else being equal a larger sensor will yield a shallower depth of field is a short-hard for this dynamic.

    Great camera, but it has a marketing problem. The name let's you think, it's a successor of the GX8, but in fact it's the successor for the GX80 or GX7 if you want to go back a bit further in history. And Panasonics naming convention for Japan also implies this. GX7 > GX7mk2 (GX80) > GX7mk3 (GX9). But as I already have the GX80, I don't see me upgrading to GX9.

    Thanks for the review Hugh. I just purchased a a GX85 as I wanted to try out the Panasonic system and I really like small and light systems. If I like it I will upgrade to the GX9 but at the moment I saved over $400 on the used price of the GX85 over the GX9. I purchased the GX85 body with the Panasonic Leica 25 mm f1.4. The 17 mm is next on my list. The GX85 + 25 f1.4 set me back $665. Over systems I considered for a small and light set up were the Fuji X-S10 + 35 F2 (22 ounces) and the Sony A7C + 50 F.25 (24 ounces). I am sure both would be great but the Fuji set up is around twice the price and Sony was three times the price.

GX9 advantages: Dual IS 2.0, higher resolution and tilting EVF, small size, a few real neat photo software tricks (L-Monochrome D, simulated grain, sequence composition). G85 advantages: flippy screen, handling, headphone jack as I recall but I’m not sure, larger EVF as I recall (again, I’m not sure). For vlogging, I’d go G85. For street photography or a real combination of video and stills, I’d go GX9. @3BMEP  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Chloe, I've learned that the twisty (as opposed to what I probably should have called "tilty" but you knew what I meant) gives me four advantages: 1) it allows me to do street work off axis, with the camera away from my eye; 2) with the exception of maybe only the new Nikon Z, I've found that the eye piece of the other cameras I've used blocks a bit of the
      screen when I'm viewing from wait level; 3) the twisty allows me to shoot maximum overhead because the tilties don't articulate a full 90 degrees ; and recently we've been using a G9 with pixel shift to shoot shots, and the twisty screen is especially useful here as I alternate between moving the object and moving the camera.

With one finger you can instantly pull out the GX9’s screen and have a discreet, private view to whatever’s in front of you. During the old days of the GX8 I cannot count the number of times I went to reach for the screen but ran out of time for the pull & twist needed to get it into position."
      I agree with him.
      I think what it is - not in your case however - is that so many reviewers on youtube extol the virtue of the flip out screen because of a vlogging requirement, and camera manufacturers do listen. But the majority of us (I have asked every videographer at every wedding I have shot in the last few months) do no want the flip out screen as it is a burden.

    Nice vid, hugh.
    But If the camera goddess was to appear and demand that I rid myself of all my cameras except one, that sole survivor would likely be my Gx8.
    It's this fact that makes the Gx9 so tricky to accept. Because it eschews so much of what makes the 8 so brilliant. The glorious EVF, weathersealing, the layout afforded by the bigger body, the articulated screen. Even 1/8000 mech shutter. All gone.
    Now, I acknowledge that many bemoaned the loss of the Gx7, and preferred smaller , tilt only screen etc. I'd argue they got theirs via the Gx85 and the Gx9 largely doubles down on that camera.
    Meanwhile, those who think the addition of the G85 shutter and Ibis to a Gx8 body and sensor would have created their perfect flagship camera will likely never see it.
    All that said, I do hope that L.Monochrome D makes it via firmware to my new G9. That seems a very nice thing to have.

      Panasonic said only (and I'm paraphrasing) that it's a leap to assume it's a Sony sensor. I say: it may or may not be, but don't forget that Panasonic owns 49% of chip manufacturer TowerJazz Panasonic Semiconductor Co. Ltd.

    Hmmm lots to think about there as usual with your videos. This camera has torn me in half, and end of day I probably wont buy a GX9. Why? The only thing this almost perfect camera has missing; weather sealing, I want it for nature trails in all weather so I will probably keep what I have and buy a GH5, only for its weather sealing, sigh. My history, I dumped DSLRs when I bought a Leica X113 as a street camera and found the DSLR just couldnt cut the IQ. But I wanted a system body so bought a Leica T with an adapter to take my Nikkor primes and a Panasonic GX7 for longer nature lenses. OMG the GX7 with an Olympus 17mm f1.8 is the best street camera I ever used. Am i interested in a full frame Sony? Definately not, people on the street are the human interest in my photos, the subject is the background, I want the architecture and the bustle of the crowds, I want infinite depth of field with a fast aperture and Panasonic delivers in spades. So I noticed the GX8 and was interested in an upgrade but what i wanted was a GX8MkII with a shockless shutter and no sensor filter. Well the MkII turns out to be the same as my lovely GX7 and have everything I wanted BUT......., they lost the weather sealing - deep gloom. So I will probably ignore my perfect camera, keep my lovely GX7 and buy a GH5 for my weather sealed nature lenses. Have to say its exciting times for us Panasonic fans, four flagship cameras in a year; now I just want them to weather seal the Leica 25mm f1.4 as a complement to my 17mm when the weather is bad and i will be happy ;-)

      Yes I hate fully articulated screens and love the tilting screen on my GX7. I never use portrait format as it looks wrong to me on a screen so usually either use landscape or crop square like a Rollei. A screen poking out sideways just looks silly to me ;-)

    Hugely disappointing, to me. Dramatically worse battery life, the old Dual IS system, not the newer Dual IS 2, no weather sealing, older processing engine, etc. I love Panasonic, and love my G85, but any of the Sony a6XXX series would blow the GX9 away.

    • @3BMEP
      @3BMEP  6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Mark, I understand your disappointment. On the other hand, I started with an a6000 - it's what got me off Canon --
      and still own an a6300 in which we continue to invest (just got the excellent 24-105/4 Sony). But the a6xxx does NOT -- in my opinion, though I respect yours -- blow away the GX9.

      I think the G9 is the new Gx8 and the GX9 is the follow up Modell for the Gx7 and a little upgraded GX85. What's the most important fact is for me that since the G9 came out i think the Jpeg ooc is almost nice as the Fuji ones. I think you get a well rounded complete system with the hole range of lenses. Sony does'nt think this till the end. And i like Sony FF and own a G85 and an A7. And always think about how fast you get the full sharpness instead of stopping down the aperture in Aps-c. So the advantage is not so big as you might think.

    Hi really enjoy listening to how you carefully phrase things like a white mans Morgan Freeman love that guy :-) I'm considering a GX9 2nd hand in a few months for that street rangefinder style to supplement my weather sealed Oly EM5ii with the advantage of 20MP sensor, 4k, DFD, plus dual IS with my Leica 12-60 f2.8-4 when I'm not using primes. 100% agree it looks a real stealthy black beauty with the Leica 15mm what a stunning looking combo. Stay safe, Rich.

    Personally I own the Gx7 and similarly use it for photos. I understand all the drawbacks to the GX9 but as solely for photography it’s could be a winner. I would have thought it would have a limited appeal so in time will be heavily discounted. I like the GX7 but having dropped it 3 times now will be looking for a replacement and this GX9 or as its labelled in Japan GX7 mark2 would suit me fine. So I wait for it to be discounted and body only but I’m not going to part $1000 or equivalent to £ because it’s plainly overpriced compared to the G80, GX8 or G9. That’s me done.

      Another way of putting things is to say is that Gx9 upgraded the essentials of the beautiful Gx7, and that it was the Gx8 that went awry. If you want more grip and body, you got the G7 and its upgrades. It seems to me that the Gxs were meant to be portable.

  • @BoyInFancySuit

    Panasonic made a very nice trick and it doesn't look good to me. Sort of a mind game. Name camera GX9, so its looks like its upgrade for GX8. When in real life its upgraded GX85. Still love my GX8, and have a chance to try GX85 (good camera), wondering if 20mp vs 16 with no AA filter will really looks much better?! But no weather sealing, less battery life, and no mic port? Come'on. You can't call it upgrade for GX8.

    • @3BMEP
      @3BMEP  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Roman Arkhipov I know weather sealing is an issue for a number of folks, and I’m with you. But I remind myself every now and again that photographers from Cartier-Bresson to Ansel Adams and many more didn’t have weather sealed cameras - and look what they accomplished. The nomenclature suggests to me that it is the end of the line for the GX8 body.

    • @BoyInFancySuit
      @BoyInFancySuit 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I totally understand what you mean. But its 21 century and technology let us take a picture much easier. To be fair all those classic cameras was mechanical, nowadays its electronic devices and water can be crucial for the camera. Plus $1000 and over price it's not cheap. Last week I was shooting snow storm in Chicago with GX8, for 2 hours, so I only protect 20mm lens by hold it in my hand, but the camera was covered in snow and I was comfortable that Im not going to ruit camera. The way I see what manufacturers doing right now its trying to downgrade devices, but make it look like its upgrade. In 2-3 years there will be nothing to add in M43 system. Only if Panasonic and Olympus will decide to make APSC camera. Other then that what options they have? Downgrade product (GX8), make it looks like its upgrade (GX9), wait for customers to ask for weather sealing on GX10, improved battery life and mic input...and voi-la #1) you have new improved product #2) you are good company because you listen to your customers.

    • @3BMEP
      @3BMEP  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Roman Arkhipov good points! OTOH, they are upgrading cameras too - a7R III, Nikon D850, Panasonic GH5 - and charging more for it. I’m OK with that. With cratered volumes, what choice do they have?

    Way over priced, more expensive than my G85 in Australia. If it had dual IS 2 and the same evf as the G85 it may have been worth getting as I prefer the tilt rear screens. Also no remote release socket.
    Hopefully next time we at least get the G85 specs and connections then it may be worth looking into.

    I appreciate your insight a lot. However, I don't know why any camera company has yet to just give the people what they want. Why is this such an impossibility? I wish they would have essentially just shrunk the gx8 to be the same size if not smaller than the gx85, which i currently own and love, and just upgraded the ibis and pixels to the gh5 level. Pretty friggen simple. That's more or less what everyone wants in a camera. Especially when we're talking micro four thirds. Small, and powerful, With great stabilization and a proper articulating screen and a Mic input! Am I wrong? Is that too much to ask? No one has quite gotten it right, and this update is just a teaser to mostly piss everyone off lol! Because they're still just not quite giving the people what they really all want even though it's blatantly obvious. That's just all marketing bullcrap.

    • @akyerit
      @akyerit 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for replying. Sure I agree with you, but I've also watched countless reviews from practically all of the more popular youtube reviewers in search for the best camera that would suit my needs, and from my experience, the overall opinion seems to almost 9 times out of ten be similar if not the same. That's just a perfect combo it would seem that would meet the needs of most in my opinion, and from my research. Essentially the exact features of the lumix g85, but in the form factor of something closer to the gx85, or even smaller. Hasn't been done. This would appeal to vloggers, street photographers, and filmmakers alike in my opinion. You can't tell me I'm wrong about this

    • @akyerit
      @akyerit 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Again I do appreciate your feedback, as I am always learning. They essentially did that with the gx8 though. They just made it a little too big for most peoples tastes. Which kind of goes against the whole concept of having micro four thirds in the first place. If only they would have shrunk that down to at least the similar size of the new gx9 and gave it the same stabilization. That would have been a true winner. I'm really intrigued by this new gx9, however the minimal amount of improvements compared to the gx85 doesn't warrant the extra $500 for me personally. I just feel like they missed the mark on this one. They really had an opportunity to make a potential game changer, but instead they just played it safe. I really hope the next update they get it right because i overall I really love and am happy to invest in this lineup
