The GX9 is actually the successor of the GX80/85, which in turn was the successor of the GX7. In Japan they are named GX7 - GX7 mkII - GX7 mkIII. This should explain a lot.
Firstly, love you guys, love your videos, and very glad you'll still be around on DPReview! I wanted to say though that I find it a bit frustrating when noteworthy reviewers like you guys and the Northrups always mention the "lack" of a flip out screen as seemingly a negative. There are a lot of people who don't want the screen to flip out to the side, and it seems like a lot of reviewers either don't understand that, or simply tout their opinions on it as gospel. I realize everything is subjective and you will like what you like, but you (and a select group of others) I think probably have the ears and eyes of camera manufacturers, and often cause them to pause and think about/consider changes to body styles, which is concerning in some instances. As a street photographer who does literally zero video, the tiltable screen is ideal. Flip out screens make the camera take up a larger footprint and make a camera more obvious in use. If I wanted a video camera, I'd buy a video camera. I realize that today, with vlogging blowing up and tons of people transitioning to/adding video into their skillset, that a flip out screen makes sense in a lot of cases/on a lot of cameras. But that doesn't mean it's better, or that everyone wants one or should want one, or that every camera should have one. For me the GX9/GX85 cameras are the ultimate street cameras because of their size, form factor, weight, lens selection AND importantly because they have a tiltable screen and NOT a flip out screen. Anyway, my two cents. I hope you guys have a smooth transition to DPReview, and I look forward to many years of videos from you!

I respect that TH-camrs obviously prefer a flip-out screen, but they all act as if that’s the only right preference (I’ve seen some with a rating system literally deduct points for that!) when it’s just a subjective thing and should be treated as such. A flip out screen is really annoying for many people who don’t want to shoot selfies and both systems are valid. It worries me that the reviewers with so much influence and connections to the camera industry push this system that’s only useful to them but not to most consumers who use cameras the standard way - while being behind it.
I don't understand why nobody sees the functionality of the tilting EVF for handheld video shooting like a classic camcorder. I truly miss that for use in bright light and the three point stability.

i remember when the GX line was TOP of the line from Panasonic. i LOVED my GX7 back when i had it. ALSO very upset that they got rid of the GM line. i never owned the GM1 or GM5 but always wanted one. this looks like a nice camera but totally not worth buying at the moment IMO. you can pick up a used GX85 body on fredmiranda for $400 usd. until these start hitting the used market and you can pick one up for say 600. i say get a GX85.
The Technoclast it seems I’m not alone pleading for the LX200. Leaf shutter, hot shoe, filter thread, tilt screen, cinelike d, auto ISO in full manual mode, IBIS... I will continue to be patient Panasonic.
Panasonic naming is totally weird anyway. At least in Japan they're consistent: the GX85 was the "GX7 Mark II" and the GX9 is the "GX7 Mark III", denoting the lineage.

Dont know why we have all these confusing numbers, the lineage is very clear GX7, GX80 (GX7MkII as its called in Japan) then GX9 (GX7MkIII). I absolutely loved the GX7 but wanted weather sealing, shock proof shutter and filterless 20MP. Well we got the GX8 and what a disappointment, it was huge, had a fold out fully articulated screen which I hate (I am not swinging anything out on the street it isnt discrete he he ), still had a filter, still had the rubbish mechanical shutter but did have weather sealing; it was no upgrade to the GX7 it was a new line. So I held my breath while Panasonic brought out three flagship DSLR styled models, sigh. So, I have just upgraded to the GX9 as its clear that is the best I will get anytime soon. It ticks all my boxes except weather sealing but, I realise weather sealing is useless to me as there are no weatherproof standard primes so no deal break. Only thing I dont like is the Exp Comp dial which I have disabled so that I set this function like I do on my GX7; I kept jogging it and messing with the exposure, its something I wish they had left on the GX8 and buried. So, after using the GX9 for a few days I am loving it. I have odered the extension grip for use with my 14-140mm lens on nature rambles; its clearly not needed with my 17mm, 25mm and 45mm primes. I could leave it on and charge and upload photos via USB so thats OK. So I am a satisfied bunny, this is a perfect compliment to my Leica T and if its raining I just take my Olympus TG-3 Tough tucked into my bag's back pocket ;-)
Crap '1 size fits all' review. Crap comments about its frickin' name for the love of god! I have had this for 3 months 6000 images taken. This is a street, travel camera.. Just throwing a 400mm on doesn't make it a nature can. Video isn't its main thrust. Robust, better than my old D5x00 Nikons. Weighs little, unobtrusive. IBIS great for low light up to 1 second exposure. The evf is WAY better than Nikon D3x00, D5x00 and IMHO D7x00 range with!the colours, brightness, info displayed. Tilting VF is great when doing say Cathedrals and roof or ceiling architecture. Programmable keys are cool, save me time, as does quick menu. Have a half leather case which acts as a nice grip extender. It has reignited my love of photography.. It just lets me shoot. The images are more detailed than all my old 24mp Nikons. Noise needs to be handled in RAW. Enjoy..
Am I the only person who likes these tilty screen???? Im sick of all youtubes say they want an articulating screen. Not everyone is a vlogger. LOL These are more discreet for street photography
I absolutely agree with you. If I was a video guy, yes articulating screens all day. But this style of camera is made for stills-shooting primarily and tilt screens are MUCH better for street especially.
Err no, it's more discreet to be able to flip the screen around and use viewfinder. But seeing as the viewfinder is a bit of a let-down on this compared to the GX8, I guess I understand.
I also like the tilty screen alot, very prractical when you Shooting in low angles. I also can live with that, that it has no mic Input i mostly whould use it mainly for photos and not Videos.
i have had the GX8 for a while now (your review actually helped me buy it) and since using the vertical EVF, being tall, i love it. Mandatory feature!!
Hi, loved all your TH-cam reviews on cameras. After going through your videos on the Panasonic GX 8, 80/85 and 9 multiple times, I am still at a loss to decide on buying one of these. The GX8 seemed ideal with weather sealing and the 12-35 f/2.8 lens but with risk of shutter shock, the 80/85 with a dual lens package, the GX9 with the most advance shooting features... What would you recommend now in 2020, as these are quite a few years old now? Thanks a million... I am generally a still photographer enthusiast for city street scenes and family travel photos emphasis, have Nikon D7100 and quite a few lenses.. Nic
Bought one. I like it. I also prefer the tilting screen. Makes sense in keeping the camera as compact as possible in use. It's a little crampy adjusting the exposure comp. wheel with the other knob stacked on top of it. I like the control locations on the GX8 better but I wanted the GX9 because It's smaller.
I agree about the GX8! Why don't they just make image stabilization available for 4K, no anti alias, and put on a proper microphone in jack? They would have the best iteration of the GX line yet! They keep trying to fix something that ain't broken!
Excellent review, I wish you could have done more on the photo festival after going all that way! If only Panasonic had named this camera the GX90/95, we would be taking a very different view of it's size, spec' and price. I can only think that the GX80/85 might be quietly discontinued, and a more pro' spec' GX10 is released as a G9 in a 'rangefinder' styled body. And that will be very nice!
I clicked "like" for the beautiful scenery, not the camera. If I had to choose between the GX85 and the GX9, I'd choose the GX85 which I've seen today on sale for under $700 including both the 12-32mm and 45-150mm lenses. The GX9 is $1000.00 with the 12-60 mm lens. With the choices available today, I will not be buying either camera!
This camera has so bad ergonomics that it is piratically impossible to handle it along with Panasonic 100-400. You will constantly keep pushing buttons without meaning to push them. I find it so hard to believe that after so many cameras in the line and so much experience, Panasonic succeeded making so many wrong decisions about the location of buttons on this camera. I also noticed that when taking burst shots with this camera it sometimes generates pictures with a stripe. In addition, the focus switch can be easily moved by mistake, so if you suddenly loose auto-focus capabilities, this is the first place to check (that auto moved to manual). The focus speed on this camera (at least with the 100-400) is also quite disappointing. I had a lot of focus misses. That's not what I would expect from $1,000 camera.
Last review of Chris and Jordan on camera store TH-cam channel. After that video the channel stopped to have many new subscribers and not as many views for each video as before.
hello guys the dual IS system from the GX9 is working also for videos. The GX8 didn't have the double stabilization in video only in still. Is it the same for this camera? Great job and great videos
Sadly it's like an update of GX7 & GX85, and can't vlog with selfie screen & mic input like GX8, otherwise I will get it. Maybe G85 suits me a bit more (except 16MP vs 20MP for still shooting).
In the GX80/85 review you guys spent a lot of time on the sensor and anti-alias filter compared to the GX8, and also about the buffer rate. The GX9 has improved in all these categories, but you don't mention them at all. It would be awesome to see those comparison shots you had in the previous video redone here. I'm surprised you don't have more praise for this camera given that you liked the previous one so much, and this has improved on much of it, the buffer and fps in particular. This seems like the best, up-to-date rangefinder street/travel camera, but one wouldn't know it from the review.
Oh my goodness - I've lived in the Yukon since '75 and watch your videos regularly. I had no idea you were visiting Whitehorse. Plus, you hit some of my favourite spots - Schwatka Lake Trails, Silver City, Kluane Lake, Haines Junction... Oh well. Glad you enjoyed the trip.

@13:45 There. Spot on. This is the most misleading camera model name ever. As a GX8 shooter I was really looking forward to the GX9. Finally no more shutter shock and no AA filter anymore. And maybe some faster AF. But boy was I in for a disappointment. I'd have the shutter shock of the GX8 over the crappy features and ergonomics of the GX9 any day. For me the size of the GX8 is perfect. Really comfy to hold even with longer lenses and never accidentally touching dials I don't want to. Also the flip out screen is something I use an awful lot and really don't want to miss. And what about the superb EVF of the GX8. No more snappy and OLED but laggy and LCD in the GX9. I really don't understand what Panasonic was thinking. If people want a compact decent travel camera they already had their GX85. Maybe I'm missing the point of this camera but to me it looks a lot like an overpriced GX85 or an crippled GX8.
If they would have added a bigger EVF and kept the fully articulating screen, it maybe would make sense - But that way its just a minor upgraded GX80/81/85 ...
It's the camera specially for story telling or documentary because small and so quick. Never irritates people when you are working at streets...strongly recommended using with 14mm f2.5, means that camera will disappear in your hands.
Hello Chris, what would be the next camera up form this that would fix all of your concerns? I am looking for a compact camera to take with me while riding on my bicycle. Below is the criteria that I would like it to have. I already have a high end camera (Nikon D800E & Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II Lens). 1) 20.1MP 2) Ability to shoot in RAW 3) Viewfinder 4) Large grip a plus 5) Zoom Lens 6) Removable lens not needed 7) Video not needed 8) Weather sealed a plus.
Got mine 3 years after that video. Took me a while to figure out it was not a smaller G9. Now I am really happy with the camera. Love it, use it. It sure is mostly a stills camera. The tilting EVF is a great idea. The EVF with Panasonic larger eyecup for the GX9 is really cumfortable despite being 16:9. Great pictures. And it now has Cine-D after a firmware update.
I am little confused to buy between Fuji X-t20 & Lumix Gx 9, plz give me your valuable suggestion, I do only still photography & I don't do video work & I already have Canon 5d mark iv, but I am looking retro look smaller camera body with best quality images....one side fuji X t20 in which we get 18-55 F/2.8-4 lens (3 times zoom only, but better for low light) & in another side Lumix GX9, which have 12-60mm F/3.5-5.6 (5 times zoom)...so what do you think which one will give better image quality pictures with their kit lens,
Bought this to replace my bulky Nikon DSLRs (which I still have) for travel. I also bought a DJI Osmo Action 4 specifically for video. I'll be taking both with me on my forthcoming trip to the Far East.
For me , THE NAME a camera for vlogers still assiociates with small imperfect 25$ cameras .However, these are good overall cameras, do not call them like that because it is a downgrade for them !😦

As a brilliant National Geographical photographer recently wrote (when reviewing this camera)........ "I’m a mild-mannered kind of guy, but any stills photographer who thinks a twisty screen is better than a flippy screen should be lined up and shot. With one finger you can instantly pull out the GX9’s screen and have a discreet, private view to whatever’s in front of you. During the old days of the GX8 I cannot count the number of times I went to reach for the screen but ran out of time for the pull & twist needed to get it into position." Thank you.
I love twisty screens. Not only because they fully protect the screen from scratches when you are walking around with the camera bouncing on your zip. Its out and in use with seconds.Very versatile and i don't take selfies but it gives you that option and good for if you want to film a youtube video( don't). I way prefer them to just tilty screens But we are all different and i don't honestly know what the majority prefer.
The rotating screen is a matter of taste.How many adults take selfies with a good camera?If you want to blog, then buy another camera. For photography this screen is much better.Likewise , the viewfinder is useful in bright sunshine- as you said.

How to you use the "Steps" settings when shooting focus bracketing? How would you set it for macro vs landscape? What would the differences be with short focal length vs long focal length? The first photographic equipment to invest on is a pair of slip-resistance boots/shoes. I bought a pair of water-proof military boots and on the first day of wearing them I slip backward outside a shopping mall. It was a rainy day and my backpack took the hit. Hey guys I love your videos! Was just wondering about the 1080p quality on the gx9? The gx85 seems to have mushy 1080p but good 4K and I was wondering if Panasonic fixed the 1080p on the gx9 to match other Panasonic cameras like the g7 and g85?
Kinda disappointed I didn't get to see dramatic video of Chris with his hair full of snow. Only a few flakes that melted as soon as they touched his hair.
If it was anything like the GX85, then I will be glad to skip this camera too. I sold the GX85 as I didn't like the controls, it was surprisingly heavy, and the battery life was utterly atrocious. I actually ended up with a Sony a6000 and I am amazed at how light it is while still fitting my needs (don't need 4k). Granted the battery life in these mirrorless cameras are not that great, but the Sony lasted at least twice as long.

"Big Camera" Yes 10% bigger but you get 1280x720p screen rather than a crappy 640x480, and a tilting evf, not to mention ibis is much better than the a6500 "BIG price" gx9 launch price: 849(body only), A6500: 1299(body only) "Expensive lenses" Panasonic 25mm f1.7 (50mm equivalent)=$149, Third party Sigma 30mm f1.4(roughly 50mm equivalent)=$305 "Noisy Low Light" Well compared to a6500 yes, you're right on that

Jordan there is Cinelike D and Cinelike V if you update the firmware to 1.1. I just did it without any problems. Check it out.

Same opinion here. I sold my g85 and kept my gx85 because I prefer tilt to flippy for stills.

The camera looks a bit shitty, mostly if compared to the fuji xe3, but the backdrop is SPECTACULAR! I want more like this.
As a left eye shooter the vertical evf is great, just click it up once and I'm no longer changing the focus point with my nose 😂

It's important to have smaller M4/3 gear on trips like this, especially if you need to outrun your cameraman...from a Grizzly.
Can it send a clean signal through the HDMI port?

If only Panasonic had named this camera the GX90/95, we would be taking a very different view of it's size, spec' and price. I can only think that the GX80/85 might be quietly discontinued, and a more pro' spec' GX10 is released as a G9 in a 'rangefinder' styled body. And that will be very nice!
I clicked "like" for the beautiful scenery, not the camera. If I had to choose between the GX85 and the GX9, I'd choose the GX85 which I've seen today on sale for under $700 including both the 12-32mm and 45-150mm lenses. The GX9 is $1000.00 with the 12-60 mm lens.
With the choices available today, I will not be buying either camera!
This camera has so bad ergonomics that it is piratically impossible to handle it along with Panasonic 100-400. You will constantly keep pushing buttons without meaning to push them. I find it so hard to believe that after so many cameras in the line and so much experience, Panasonic succeeded making so many wrong decisions about the location of buttons on this camera.
I also noticed that when taking burst shots with this camera it sometimes generates pictures with a stripe.
In addition, the focus switch can be easily moved by mistake, so if you suddenly loose auto-focus capabilities, this is the first place to check (that auto moved to manual).
The focus speed on this camera (at least with the 100-400) is also quite disappointing. I had a lot of focus misses. That's not what I would expect from $1,000 camera.
Last review of Chris and Jordan on camera store TH-cam channel. After that video the channel stopped to have many new subscribers and not as many views for each video as before.

The GX8 didn't have the double stabilization in video only in still. Is it the same for this camera? Great job and great videos
This camera was such a let down. No mic jack, bad evf, no weather sealing and $1000. Should have been $800 with the specs it has.

Sadly it's like an update of GX7 & GX85, and can't vlog with selfie screen & mic input like GX8, otherwise I will get it. Maybe G85 suits me a bit more (except 16MP vs 20MP for still shooting).
In the GX80/85 review you guys spent a lot of time on the sensor and anti-alias filter compared to the GX8, and also about the buffer rate. The GX9 has improved in all these categories, but you don't mention them at all. It would be awesome to see those comparison shots you had in the previous video redone here. I'm surprised you don't have more praise for this camera given that you liked the previous one so much, and this has improved on much of it, the buffer and fps in particular. This seems like the best, up-to-date rangefinder street/travel camera, but one wouldn't know it from the review.
Oh my goodness - I've lived in the Yukon since '75 and watch your videos regularly. I had no idea you were visiting Whitehorse. Plus, you hit some of my favourite spots - Schwatka Lake Trails, Silver City, Kluane Lake, Haines Junction... Oh well. Glad you enjoyed the trip.

@13:45 There. Spot on. This is the most misleading camera model name ever. As a GX8 shooter I was really looking forward to the GX9. Finally no more shutter shock and no AA filter anymore. And maybe some faster AF. But boy was I in for a disappointment.
I'd have the shutter shock of the GX8 over the crappy features and ergonomics of the GX9 any day. For me the size of the GX8 is perfect. Really comfy to hold even with longer lenses and never accidentally touching dials I don't want to. Also the flip out screen is something I use an awful lot and really don't want to miss. And what about the superb EVF of the GX8. No more snappy and OLED but laggy and LCD in the GX9.
I really don't understand what Panasonic was thinking. If people want a compact decent travel camera they already had their GX85. Maybe I'm missing the point of this camera but to me it looks a lot like an overpriced GX85 or an crippled GX8.
Did you try updating to GX8 latest firmware to remedy the shuttershock?

If they would have added a bigger EVF and kept the fully articulating screen, it maybe would make sense - But that way its just a minor upgraded GX80/81/85 ...

It's the camera specially for story telling or documentary because small and so quick. Never irritates people when you are working at streets...strongly recommended using with 14mm f2.5, means that camera will disappear in your hands.

Hello Chris, what would be the next camera up form this that would fix all of your concerns?
I am looking for a compact camera to take with me while riding on my bicycle.
Below is the criteria that I would like it to have.
I already have a high end camera (Nikon D800E & Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II Lens).
1) 20.1MP
2) Ability to shoot in RAW
3) Viewfinder
4) Large grip a plus
5) Zoom Lens
6) Removable lens not needed
7) Video not needed
8) Weather sealed a plus.
Got mine 3 years after that video. Took me a while to figure out it was not a smaller G9. Now I am really happy with the camera. Love it, use it.
It sure is mostly a stills camera. The tilting EVF is a great idea. The EVF with Panasonic larger eyecup for the GX9 is really cumfortable despite being 16:9. Great pictures. And it now has Cine-D after a firmware update.
I am little confused to buy between Fuji X-t20 & Lumix Gx 9, plz give me your valuable suggestion, I do only still photography & I don't do video work & I already have Canon 5d mark iv, but I am looking retro look smaller camera body with best quality images....one side fuji X t20 in which we get 18-55 F/2.8-4 lens (3 times zoom only, but better for low light) & in another side Lumix GX9, which have 12-60mm F/3.5-5.6 (5 times zoom)...so what do you think which one will give better image quality pictures with their kit lens,
Bought this to replace my bulky Nikon DSLRs (which I still have) for travel. I also bought a DJI Osmo Action 4 specifically for video. I'll be taking both with me on my forthcoming trip to the Far East.
No camera can achieve these sharp images Panasonic delivers. GX9 is a great camera, but unfortunately overpriced.

For me , THE NAME a camera for vlogers still assiociates with small imperfect 25$ cameras .However, these are good overall cameras, do not call them like that because it is a downgrade for them !😦

As a brilliant National Geographical photographer recently wrote (when reviewing this camera)........
"I’m a mild-mannered kind of guy, but any stills photographer who thinks a twisty screen is better than a flippy screen should be lined up and shot. With one finger you can instantly pull out the GX9’s screen and have a discreet, private view to whatever’s in front of you. During the old days of the GX8 I cannot count the number of times I went to reach for the screen but ran out of time for the pull & twist needed to get it into position."

I love twisty screens. Not only because they fully protect the screen from scratches when you are walking around with the camera bouncing on your zip.
Its out and in use with seconds.Very versatile and i don't take selfies but it gives you that option and good for if you want to film a youtube video( don't).
I way prefer them to just tilty screens
But we are all different and i don't honestly know what the majority prefer.
G85 is exactly the same price, do you think that GX9 has better video autofocus and Image Quality than G85? It’s a big dilemma for me. Thank you!

The rotating screen is a matter of taste.How many adults take selfies with a good camera?If you want to blog, then buy another camera. For photography this screen is much better.Likewise , the viewfinder is useful in bright sunshine- as you said.

How to you use the "Steps" settings when shooting focus bracketing? How would you set it for macro vs landscape? What would the differences be with short focal length vs long focal length? The first photographic equipment to invest on is a pair of slip-resistance boots/shoes. I bought a pair of water-proof military boots and on the first day of wearing them I slip backward outside a shopping mall. It was a rainy day and my backpack took the hit. Kinda disappointed I didn't get to see dramatic video of Chris with his hair full of snow. Only a few flakes that melted as soon as they touched his hair.
If it was anything like the GX85, then I will be glad to skip this camera too. I sold the GX85 as I didn't like the controls, it was surprisingly heavy, and the battery life was utterly atrocious. I actually ended up with a Sony a6000 and I am amazed at how light it is while still fitting my needs (don't need 4k). Granted the battery life in these mirrorless cameras are not that great, but the Sony lasted at least twice as long.

It is a mirroless camera, not a compact camera. Compact cameras have fixed lenses.

Is the evf equal to Gm5 or better? The Gm5 has similar tearing.
I know its bigger than Gm5, but doesn't seem by much.
David Bateman if you want an upgrade from GM5, GX9 won't disappoint you. Just do expect anything about video capability if you need.

Big camera, big price, tiny sensor, expensive lenses, noisy low light. I'll take an a6500 thanks.
"Big Camera" Yes 10% bigger but you get 1280x720p screen rather than a crappy 640x480, and a tilting evf, not to mention ibis is much better than the a6500
"BIG price" gx9 launch price: 849(body only), A6500: 1299(body only)
"Expensive lenses" Panasonic 25mm f1.7 (50mm equivalent)=$149, Third party Sigma 30mm f1.4(roughly 50mm equivalent)=$305
"Noisy Low Light" Well compared to a6500 yes, you're right on that
