One. Using that drill press to drive that spade bit, you can expect it to get hot. My King Seeley, (Craftsman) that's at least fifty years old but has a relatively new 3/4 horse motor gets hot spinning a one inch Forstner bit for an extended period.
Two. I have one similar, also from Harbor Freight, and my guess is it's at least eighteen years old now, runs quiet, and it's drilled a lot of holes up to one quarter inch, and if I kept going with it continuously, it gets hot too. It's not an industrial grade machine, its for guys working a hobby on small work.
Three. The motor hitting the housing means you didn't lock the tensioner after you changed the speed. That spring isn't strong enough to do it, that's why you have a thumb screw there to lock it.
Four. The finish in the holes going bad means it's time to sharpen the damned bit, it's not the machine's fault. The slowest speed you have is still too fast for that size bit. A spade drill has exactly no positive rake on the cutting edge, it's just a rotary scraper, meaning much heat for not much work.

I have the same one, and Ive used it with no problems. You should bring that back to Harbor Freight. There is something wrong with that motor.

How can a motor be hot after 2 hours? My car is cool after 30 minutes.

I’ve had the Central Machinery model 813B for about ten years. It’s never failed me. Maybe the newer models are different.

I use this for wood, polymer, and aluminum and no problem at all.

If your motor housing is still hot two hours later, your motor wont be around long

You have it set to the slowest speed.
Have you changed the configuration to use it in one of the other 4 speeds???
I have the same machine and have never had any problems.

I found it to be a complete hunk o junk. I got mine because of budget. I should have saved my pennies up and got something of better quality and performance.

you really should move up to the next speed on your motor cuz brother im 40 yrs. experiance woodpecker and i can tell youre drilling way to dam slow im surprised you havent realized this because youre leaving a really nasty hole gonna work yer ass off trying to make it useable unless ya dont give a darn my opinion and if you enjoy doing all the work use an auger drill unless you want the machine to do the work just call me lazy but thats why i buy a machine to do this when & if i need work done unless i have years to finish it! good luck & best wishes

And that’s called a speed bit for a reason. Need to move fast, otherwise it’s just going to dig in.
