    *Bought as a gift for my son and his second grade son to use on a Pinewood Derby car. Wanted something relatively safe and able to be packed away when not in use. Worked well. **MyBest.Tools** Easy to use and set up. Case provides good storage.*

    I have a Craftsman version of this drill press. I bought it at a an estate sale for 10 bucks some 10 years ago and it is still working. If this is the same company that made that one, you got yourself a great drill.

    Everyone falls for the Freight Harbor offer price. "This was $100 but I got it on sale for $60." Their "sale" price is actually their regular price. The eternal sale. This is what they do to make you feel like you need to buy it that very instant. Most retailers do this but HB is king at it.

    • @junebug1701
      @junebug1701 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I didn't fall for anything. I found a HF coupon for this drill press for $49.95 and at that price, it's a no brainer. No way would I have bought it for their regular "sale" price. And the 4" vice reviewed above is too big for this drill press. It requires a 2 1/2 inch vise such as the Performance Tool W3939 sold by Summit Racing and Amazon. The holes in the vise line up with the slots in the HF drill press and it can be bolted down.

    • @robc8468
      @robc8468 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The HF is still overpriced at $50 skip a pizza and buy the 8" WEN DP on sale for $65. The extra $15 buys a quiet cast iron machine with a great fit and finish. Non believers can read the Amazon reviews of the WEN D/P.

    I have both of these. There doesn't seem to be a reasonable way to attach the vise to the table. I just used a couple of squeeze clamps. Is there a way to bolt it down to the table?
    BTW, I removed the crank handle from the table height adjuster, packed the housing with a ton of grease, and sealed it with metal flue tape. The gear spinning in the bath of grease makes the adjustment nice and smooth.

    easy to adjust simple use the switch adjust micro adjust then throw the

    • @dial2fast

      The vice works well in clamping small pieces to bigger pieces. No problem with slipping except if you clamp something very long and the weight is uneven.

      The 4 inch vise is too damned big for an 8 inch D/P keep it 3 inch or 2 1/2 would be much better still. Bigger is NOT better with a very small work table on these machines.

    • @dial2fast
      @dial2fast  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I know some people say it wobbles, but I don't have this problem. I have drilled sheet metal, plastic, wood, and they all were fine. I think if you are doing some very precise machining, then it might fall a bit short, but for everyday home use, I think the performance is great.

  • @tubejim101

    Do you bolt the vise to the drill press table? Hope to see some videos showing what you made with your drill press.

    • @dial2fast
      @dial2fast  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Depending on what you are drilling, you can certainly put a bolt through the vise and to the drill press, but you don't have to. I end up putting one bolt through both and able to slide it around and move it. (note: the vise hole and press table holes don't line up, so you can only get one side to line up)

    a plus here that the spindles are made of aluminum better than plastic 5:03

  • @robc8468
    @robc8468 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The 4 inch vise is way too big for a 8" drill press a 2", 2 1/2" at most a 3 " is a much better choice. I hated the build quality wobbly quill fit and cheap stamped table and base of my harbor freight 8" D/P I sold it and bought an 8" WEN drill press for about $65 it is solid and all the major pieces are cast iron and fit correctly without wobble. the Harbor Freight 8 and 10 inch D/P used to be cast iron now they are die cast aluminum head and are sub-par IMHO. If you need to clamp bigger work on a small drill press Harbor Freight sells a table clamp that looks like half a vise grip with a bolt on the bottom for under $10 that works well.

    Do you know how to remove the chuck?

    • @WeAreNotAlone69
      @WeAreNotAlone69 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Re: Do you know how to remove the chuck?
      A: So you don't damage the bearings in the quill....You remove the chuck by using a set of wedges /tie rod separator removal type tool... you position wedge /separator above chuck, put some rags of something soft below chuck and gently tap the wedge /separator tool... it will come right off.
      To install... if you want to get a super tight fit... Clean surfaces...Heat the chuck in oven to 200 degrees (This will expand the metal, 200 should not affect heat treat AFAIK).. install as normal... IE: raise table.. Use quill handle and press it into place.

    Hi, I just bought this drill press and same vice yesterday, along with a spring centerpunch and step bit set. Thanks for the tips about the motor bolts. Do you have a link to the speed chart you mentioned? Maybe you could add it to your description. It's a shame that they didn't include this inside the lid. I've seen other videos with previous models that had a drill bit size and materials chart included next to the pulley diagram. My other drill press is a small Dremel rig for detail work like PCB drilling. I got this to be able to drill aluminum guitar effects enclosure boxes.

    • @dial2fast
      @dial2fast  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I found a chart and saved it as jpg. I put the link in the description for you to download. There are many different charts on the internet, so use only as a guide.

      ***** I ended up returning this to HF because the shaft table wasn't perpendicular to the drill bit travel without shimming it from the bottom with a plastic bread bag clip. It bugged me so I got a Craftsman 10" bench drill press w/laser from Sears. It's very heavy duty and designed and built just perfect!

    How HOT does the motor get with ZERO LOAD? / With load?
    The motor(s) on the 2017 Harbor Freight /Central Machinery 8in, 5-sp
    drill presses.. ITEM 60238. mfg date 2017-02, Pur 2017-05 run so HOT,
    HOT, HOT you'll get BURNED if you touch the motor on the (2) I've tested
    after being run just a couple of minutes @ZERO LOAD (Free spin) !
    NOTE: These high temps are with ZERO, ZERO LOAD... even with BELT OFF...
    Motors /quill /spindle spin freely... Motor will free-spin so there is
    NOT excessive tightness in motor(s) causing the HIGH TEMPS.
    (Need to find my IR thermometer..... Can't touch the motor(s) without
    getting BURNED.)
    2017 Harbor Freight /Central Machinery 8in, 5-sp drill presses.. ITEM
    60238
    2.4amps.. HF site says 1/2hp but 2.4amps does NOT equal 1/2hp and tons
    of people report 60238 needs more power, and alot of people in the
    reviews on HF say motor runs extremely HOT.
    Stamped steel tablet
    Stamped steel base

      WeAreNotAlone69 there's a video on here where john taylor puts a thermometer gun thingy on the motor and after about 10 minutes the temperature is nearly 200 degrees. it was over 170. i own the ten inch and the vid convinced me to place a fan blowing directly on the the motor to help keep cool if im using it for long periods.

    • @robc8468
      @robc8468 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can fry an egg on that motor. At only 2.1 Amps the motor is converting a huge amount of power to heat instead of rotary motion. That motor must put out 1/8 HP or less at the shaft at most.
