The reason why Mexico speaks spanish today is because Lazaro Cardenas, he made public education mandatory. In 1908 Madero did a census and found that 82% of Mexicans still spoke indigenious languages. It's similar to the UK, before WW1 almost every there spoke their own dialects like Cornish, Yorkie , C0kney etc.. by WW1 public education was mandtory to children and RP english was taught. Around this same time Irish speakers decline massivly.
Actual Nahuatl (not classical nahuatl) is related to Tlingit, tlingit also uses the TE -prefix and it also means Rock in Tlingit too. They use it to mean an indicator of location as well. But Tlingit also has the infamous TL sound that Nahuatl has.
Another intersting thing is that MICHIGAN State and Michocan State mean the same thing.
MICHIGAN( MEECH WA KAN) - Great Lakes in Ojibwe
MICOCAN ( MEESH WA GAN) - Great Fishing Lakes in Nahuatl
There is also CHAPUL TEPEK (Raiders/Grasshoppers Hill) meaning the same thing in Turkic.
So Aztlan could have been much further north than the SE, probably near Lake Missoula.
The Navajo also mention that Aztecs as SNAKE TRIBE ( NAAKI DENE) and they would migrate all the time, but they were a hunter/warrior society that would offer protection for temporary settlement.
Snake tribe is also the NAGA people of India. Probably why Mexican flag literally has GARUDA (eagle) vs NAGA (snake) on their flag.

It is definitely not pronounced "Na-wa-tel" Loose the "tel" at the end and instead use a semi-click "tsh" with air escaping through the back of the tongue while the tip of the tongue is touching the central incisors. At the very least just pronounce the "t" w/o the "tel" [Na-wa-t] or properly [Na-wa-tsh]

Méxihco is pronounced as MAY-SHEE-KOH. Also, the TL in Classical Nahuatl is pronounced as TSH.
