Just as the gods Tezcatlipoca, Quetzalcoatl, and Nanahautzin sacrificed themselves so the sun could move across the sky, so too did the Aztecs believe people must follow their example, and spill blood to thank the gods for their life, their maize, and the sun.

Four times the gods created a new sun. Four times they destroyed the sun and an age came to an end. And so too will our current age, the fifth sun, come to ruin…

And no, u see, the prehispanic cultures of Mexico hate the Meshicas rulers and their allies (the Tlaxcaltecas and the Zapotecas) the three rulers in the Triple Alianza (Three Allie's) A.K.A. Aztecas, the other cultures switch side with the Spanish to kill them (Totonacos, Otomíes, Mayas and Toltecas)
When the tlaxcaltecas see they can't win they betrayed the Meshicas, then, the Zapotecas surrender asking by forgiveness but they end being slaves (surviving with the Tlaxcaltecas) but the Meshicas were totally destroy by steel, fire and sickness, only one third of the Aztecs die [the Meshicas] so it's understandable that Mexican culture use the most reconocible faction in their history to represent us.

As I have heard the story Quetzalcoatl didn't call the rain of fire, that was Tlaloc who was grieving over his wife who Tezcatlipoca stole. Tlaloc neglected his job as rain bringer and the earth dried up so Quetzalcoatl pleaded and the humans begged Tlaloc for rain but this just annoyed Tlaloc so he made it rain fire
Then Tlalocs wife became the sun and doted on her humans until Tezcatlipoca accused her of being a poser who only pretended to like the humans and made her cry blood for 52 years
Also Quetzalcoatl hates the practice of human sacrafice, it disgusted him.
Also I have seen conflicting accounts of the god of the fifth Sun being Tonatiuh or Huitzilopochtli. According to following legends Tonatiuh had gone from humble to arrogant and the other gods started to hate him because he demanded too much blood to move around and the more he halted the closer the evil goddesses of Stars called the Tzitzimitl would catch up to him and try to consume him to destroy the sun and then the earth.
Quetzalcoatl also saw that Tonatiuh had hoarded all art, music, and Cocoa beans in his sun palace so he snuck in and stole them from him to give to humanity because he loves humans
Lord of the Dawn Tlahuizcalpantecuhtli tried shooting an arrow at Tonatiuh but he caught the arrow and shot it back impaling the Lord of Dawn in the head and transforming him into the god of Frost and coldness
Finally Huitzilopochtli the Warrior god who had fought the night to keep it back had enough of Tonatiuh and booted him out of the sun and took it upon himself to carry the sun around diligently to keep it out of the hands of the night
