Great nostalgia Trip. Brings me back to when I first started in the hobby. Girst boc sets I ever got were the 5th ed starter paint set with bretonian archers and a box set of 2 kinghts of the realm.

That 5th ed. fantasy starter box set got me into the hobby. Great memories, here. I dont have the cardboard terrain anymore, and sold the lizardmen to a close friend back then, but I still have the Bretonnian half kicking around.

Great and I’m sure it was the boxed game that got many a youngster into the hobby. You need to dig up those Bret’s then and start painting them

That was my first box of WFB as well. I still have all the buildings, the two units of Bretonnian archers, the books, etc. but the Knights and all the Lizards I traded away years ago. What a great set, though. And the Games Day diorama from that release! I was blown away when I saw that in White Dwarf. Just soooo cool. I would have loved to have seen that in person.

Wow what a wave of nostalgia! I remember as a kid pouring over this booklet over and over wishing I lived near a games workshop store. I feel old now lol.

I love these catalogue reviews! My introduction to the game was that same box set which my dungeon master and I split when we were in high school. One of these days I'd love to have that box set again. Looking forward to more catalogue reviews. Also, love hearing your stories of how connected you were with the GW crew even back then! So cool.

I’ve got at least one of these in the garage… probably in the 5th Ed. Starter box, in fact. I laughed when you flipped to the last page with the photos of Alan Perry’s garage. I visited him this last summer and incredibly, that appears to be the same garage he has today… except there’s a lot more stuff in it now! Those blank wall spaces have been filled in nicely with art, artifacts and cabinets full of miniatures. His gaming table… even more amazing. He had this incredible battle setup from the War of the Spanish Succession, I think? Hundreds and hundreds of miniatures all ranked up and ready. Just mind-blowing.

Oh wow what an experience Dan and this has brought back some nice memories of visiting the Perry’s games room and seeing all their amazing collections. Thanks for watching and commenting

I still have this little freebie! The picture of ghazkull vs the avatar was inspiring to me and that ghazkull model was thr first blister pack i got, my grandma bought it for me. I was lucky enough to get that 2nd ed 40k and wfb and still have the models, the bretonians will being dusted off soon!

Wayne England can't get enough recognition in my opinion, if theres one artist I can credit for my conception of what 40k looks like, it has to be him. Thanks for taking us on these nostalgia trips!

I think these were still floating around by late 1999 in some GWs, which was lovely given 3rd ed 40k had dropped at the end of 1998 and 6th ed Fantasy was coming the following year :P

You should have seen us last Friday night trying to work out Legion Imperialis, and 6 grown men complaining that's there's no quick play guide, like you got with 2nd Ed 40k and whfb etc.

I remember the free booklet like this for 4th edition - the time when you could get free stuff from GW. Don't think they still do these?

I’d be very surprised if you got anything for free nowadays apart from the sprues on some magazines they sell in the newsagents
