i'm re-building my 76 1500 spitfire ,the overdrive annulus is stuck on the sliding member,so that needs to be sorted before the engine gets re-fitted;however for the time being i'm going to fit two O2 meters (i have them) so i can tune the carbs ,i have a colour tune but i kept getting a lot of fouling, there were issues about the ignition in that cold starting and hot starting could be a pain, now i know why,the 12v coil was fed by a 6v ballast wire,so at start up even a rich mixture had a hard time igniting by a low volt spark,at crank the voltage would drop to around 8 or 9 volts so the ballast wire would feed even less as the system voltage was lower and potentially the coil was getting 4v or worse, instead of a 6v coil being boosted via the starter motor side of the starter solenoid to around 8v giving a hotter spark.
    Live and learn.
Any ideas to unstick a stuck annulus and sliding member without damage,i have a variable hydraulic pump i can pressure the O/D with, but the O/D is supposed to come apart no problem.
I need to get a balancing tool.
    Nice vid .

You said to adjust the Idle after the Filters are replaced as they will lower the Idle…. How can you determine if they are both set the same as you’ve now blocked any way of using the Synchronizing Tool?

Hello, thanks for watching the video. The air filters are identical so the carbs will still be balanced but when they are replaced but the engine will run slightly slower.

Dear Alec, thank you. I'm a new Healey owner and quite a rookie in the tune/mechanic dept. I'm wondering if you're using the color tune on all the plugs or did you just do it for two? If two, which two do you do the process with? Couldn't see what you unscrewed to isolate each carb- is it the screw on that adjoining bar? Thanks for your time.

Hello, many thanks for looking at my video. You will see that each carb feed fuel to two cylinders so you only need to take out one plug for each pair. The nut that I slacken was for one of the clamps that connects the accelerator rod between the carbs. They are then independent of each other until you have adjusted them and then retighten them.
      Good luck.
      Alec

@@alecmcleod5679 Thanks a lot! Do you have any videos of you working on Timing ? Distributor / etc? For some reason, soon after I trailered this car home after buying it, it began running a little rough. I think the carbs are ok, but am wondering about the timing. Thanks for all you do!

What is the name of that mirror device you are using to adjust the mixture? And where can you buy that and the Krypton Synchro-Check?

    • @alecmcleod5679
      @alecmcleod5679  5 ปีที่แล้ว

It is called a colour tune made by Gunson and it comes with the mirror. Krypton gadget is very old but others are on the market

Hi. I have the same carb set up on a wolseley 6 and they are bogging down under acceleration. Any ideas ? Thank you

Hello Sam, l'm not quite familiar with the tem bogging down, but if you mean it engine is not accelerating properly I did have this problem when one jet was sticking slightly open after using the choke. A little lubrication of the linkage sorted it out. It could be fuel. Don't use the 10 only the 5 and remember the our modern fuel goes off after a time.
Check that your No1 piston is firing at the correct time. My TR4 fires 4 deg before TDC and your point gap is correct and they are not pitted . Good luck

The Colortune is made by Gunson and sold by many outlets. The carb balancer model B89 is made by Crypton but are hard to find. Many mechanics just use a piece of tube held to the ear and "tune" them by the sound, hence the name, engine tuning

at about @2:10 how does he know that the difference isn't caused by a vacuum leak? because if it was, he just masked it, probably forever.
