    On tonight’s episode of chopping samples watch as i battle my way through multiple technical difficulties and turn lemons into limoncello! This week I’m sampling old soul records into Koala, and flipping them into some dope boom bap vibes, all the while battling my own studio 🤣
    Thank you to ki-sou for the intro and interlude music, you can find their music at:

    The syrup compression. Always adds flavour to the whole thing 🔥🔥

      @BirdBoss  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yup I just had to have something visually represent what the compressor does !

    Love these vids man, literally shows how powerful koala and sampling in general could be. Along remembering that if it's a vibe there's no need to keep working further, if it's goods it's good!

      Thank you!!! Koala really is a beast of a sampler I don’t think there’s anything you can’t do on it just gotta be creative.

    Fire as always! I know that sample from a Remix by DJ Koze on a Homeboy Sandman joint: Holiday (Kosi & Fink's Edit)

      Yup someone pointed it out in another comment, yall have such a wide knowledge of music it’s crazy 🤣

    The 'breathing space' you're leaving at the start points of your one shot hits definitely allow some extra groove in.

    • @BirdBoss
      @BirdBoss  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Absolutely, one of the drum kits I use all the sounds have a gap in the beginning and it provides some extra randomness

      @@BirdBoss Yeah man. Back in the late 80s and early 90s with my first samplers we didn't have transient detection and the displays weren't always so good. And one would have to do a lot of scrolling on an alpha wheel/continuous dial to edit the start point, or try and get lucky and type it in! And if one cuts into a kick or hat it sounds bad. So lots of air ended up being left by default! Hehe. Couldn't always detect it aurally, or visually, so there where lots of sloppy cuts which definitely became part of the sound! With hats dragging it always sounds good as it makes kick and snare sound tight.
      I started with the Akai S-900, then got a Roland W-30.

      @@BirdBoss Just remembered this after writing that. We could set the input trigger level so that sampling started when the sampler heard the signal, but if that was gonna be chopped we were back in the situation I described! Hehe. Plus the input sensitivity dial on the W-30 was protruding from the back panel, and became physically affected after a few gigs due to it being pushed in when in a flight case unless one put the keyboard in upside down to protect it. Bad design.

      It really sounds like the Wild West in the early days of samplers, I’m gonna have to look those up never heard of them, people still cooking up on them?

    • @thekeysman6760
      @thekeysman6760 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@BirdBoss Well the Akai S-900 didn't have timestretch, that came with the S-1000 and they retrospectively made an S-950 model with timestretch. But we're talking that Juuuunglist maaasive strange early timestretch! People still have them and use them, but the modern Akai MPC units are way better for sample rate and obviously timestretching. And the Roland W-30 was slightly different in that it sampled at 12bit but played back at 16bit, which made for a cleaner, but still old school sound. I will add that about 20 years ago I decided that for total, repeatable control, it's more efficient to chop tight samples and then just shift the whole hi hat MIDI pattern backwards, for instance. Or shift individual hits.

    In gonna have to try this sampler it looks similar to the bandlab sampler im a fan of that a MPC style midi controller with it will be a game changer

    • @BirdBoss
      @BirdBoss  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Absolute bro my only thing with the midi controller is I find I have to force myself to use it with Koala, it’s faster to just drag it and bc I’m using an iPad I’m still getting the feeling of tapping out the beat with my hands. I’m also a BIG fan of working in the grid lately don’t know why it just works for me
