I 100% agree with your findings and also suspected a dehydrator. It’s so great seeing it actually compared to one. We had similar conclusions BUT one of the things I noticed with longer molds is that this machine’s trays warp so the resin is uneven after being cured. So bubbly AND lop-sided 🥲 also, I forgive our beef. Y’all too cute to stay salty at.

What I liked about both yours and Evan & Katelyn's videos is that they both go over different aspects of the machine. Theirs went over more of the temperature and how it works with the resin, and what I remember of yours is that you went into more of the logistics and how the molds fit. Everybody wins! Thank you for both your reviews!

Speaking of/related to thermal runaway, Peter Brown accidentally discovered a combination of resin and dye that reacted with each other to generate heat and cause some especially violent thermal runaway. It bubbled so much it looked like lava rock when it cured.

Obviously I don’t know what you guys are like off-camera, but I feel like Evan’s indignation over the likelihood of the machine’s being a scam is the most genuine possible reaction. 😂 He was less mad when he fell through the ceiling and it’s so relatable.
I just had the WILDEST idea after Evan said "It's cutting my fingers, perfect!" and honestly I'm unsure how you haven't attempted it before. Hear me out, two words. Resin SWORDS.
And I know you did the Minecraft diamond swords but I mean like ACTUAL short swords that can cut things. The design possibilities are endless and you could even embed wireless lights into them if you wanted like the dice. I just hope they're durable enough not to break but you never know until you try!
Worst case scenario you could also do resin daggers if it fails
Edit: I know about the knives, but that's just a regular ol' kitchen knife. Swords are way cooler. And bigger.

Note: please do NOT use the dehydrator that you used for resin for food! It will make you sick because chemicals from the resin will get in your food. Also loved Evan’s proposal very romantic lol 😆
Considering their very cautious about this sort of thing usually, I’m sure they won’t be using it for food beyond this point.
as long as you let it cure completely and remove the resin, it will be non toxic (i think, i dont really know, but once resin cures it is non toxic)

I saw another creator who makes MASSIVE resin sculptures bought a chest freezer and he puts way to deep pours in it with minimal cooling on amd it cures perfectly (he does it to get rid of layer lines)

I love Evan’s “doing things wrong” horns as a cautionary signal, and the editing on this video was phenomenal!
It is irrelevant but could you place a blender, mixer or rotor below surface level and let it run during curing. Can you capture spiralling flow? Will it stop almost suddenly? Will mixing make the reaction faster or wont affect the speed? Will partially solid chunks crashed again?
And one more idea, could you guys do a frozen in time lava lamp only using resin? Even you are bombarded with ideas and wont do any of these, Thanks for the videos, i enjoy every single one of them.

Some mini lava lamp fridge magnets/stained glass/enamel pin-type lamps would be super cute! And give plenty of opportunities for color variety or small scale tests.

i would assume the thickness gets progressively higher until the thing doing the movement stops then it settles for the final cure.

Jackie released a video about the resin curing machine first, but your videos cover quite different things! Hers was about the size and shape of molds that you could use and yours was "is this just a re-packaged dehydrator?" I think they're both very worthwhile videos to have. No salt, only synergy!
I've seen a few people try this machine out and it's been pretty obvious to everyone that it's just an overpriced dehydrator. I could overlook the price if it was modified to work well specifically for resin, but it clearly wasn't! The flexible trays that don't allow for anything but pretty small molds, the lack of materials that would make it easy to clean resin off of, the inconsistent temperature within it while running, it just seems like a fail. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm off to shop for a dehydrator...😏

you guys should totally try to make stuff out of the semi cured resin like that ring Evan made, you could make much more organic and improvised shapes. Maybe pour a big thin tray and before its fully hardened pull it out and drape it over a bowl, cut strips of it and layer them into a sculpture idk just sounds cool lol
It wouldn't ever fully cure though. No different than sculpting with silly putty.

@@carlotta4th That's not true, there's nothing special about a mold to make resin cure. If you pour resin on a table instead of into a mold it will still cure, that's why one of resin's main home uses (before crafting with it became cool) was bar tops. I'm sure the layer E& K spread on the toilet seat was MUCH thinner than a bowl and it obviously cured fine.

Coming from a bartender and a resin enthusiast. Lol didn't know my dehydrator would be so diverse. But. But but! Don't put anymore fruit leather or fruit or meats in that after your resin has been there hahah get 2 cheap ones. One safe for food and one for them projects! Thanks so much for this! I thought it looked a lot like a dehydrator, the first time I saw one of these. It wouldn't be the first time things used outside of art and crafting world for other stuff are rebranded to catch the people who prefer their gadgets mint coloured, with a bigger pricetag. Usually, when I consider buying something craft related, I check the hardware stores first.
And the art stuff is always more expensive. Bought my mom a cake tool kit one holiday. Went to the boat store to buy my dad a cushion for his boat. I saw the exact same toolkit in a different color for a fraction of the price.
@@stevenpuckitt212 To be fair, the cake tools, since they come in contact with food, have to be submitted for testing (in the US at least) for heavy metals and can only be coated with food grade oils for storage. That's why the Cricut explicitly calls out that you can't cut fondant or the edible picture paper in it, the blades aren't rated safe.
It's like trying to compare silicone that's for your bathtub and the stuff used for candy molds, or worse when the fake Dr's inject people who want butt lifts with industrial silicone instead of medical grade and they die.
Meanwhile anyone coating boat tools with food grade oils (which wash off way to easy) is going to have a nasty surprise...

@@mwater_moon2865 you aren't cooking with the plastic housing container. It was just a variation of a tackle box marketed as a cake tool kit holder. The only difference was the color. Possibly pink tax for sure. DIY and art stuff in general always costs more even when they're the same product with a different sticker slapped on the packaging.
I've seen this machine in other videos too and at first I thought it looked like a dehydrator. so I bought a cheap, used dehydrator and now use it as a curing agent. i put a silicone mat in it and it works great

Watching this test I couldn't help but think, "You could make an amazing, custom Scrabble board and tiles!" It was when you started to demold the thinner layer of resin, that I got that idea. 🙂
The problem with the cheap $30 dehydrators is you get what you pay for. I got one for dehydrating 3D printing filaments (instead of the PrintDry system). After a few months of use, the fan started making noise like the bearings were worn out, and the plastic in the base of the dehydrator was starting to get the off-color cooked color. I then spent a bit more (closer to $100 I think, still cheaper than PrintDry) to get one of the ones that have a front door and metal racks. It has been a beast and hasn't given me any problems (though the interface could be a bit better).
Most dehydrators with plastic casings tend to not last too long. For sure get the metal ones that look like ovens. They're usually twice as expensive, but I can almost guarantee that they last on average way more than twice as long.

Just started watching this and after very quick Google Lens search I found the same "curing machine" (in different color) for $65 🤣
That's the same thing involving the hash making washers. They repackage it, slap a pot leaf on it and charge 2x the price when in reality it's just a dorm/rv/table top washing machine lol.

TLDW: YES, a resin curing machine is a ripoff. Resin is cured by chemical reactions, thus the only external catalyst is going to be heat. All you need to do is go to walmart and buy a cheap 30$ toaster oven, and only use the warm settings. Some of them even come with convection options, like mine, and cost 45$. Just DO NOT use the toaster oven for food after you've used it for resin. Also, if you heat water in a bowl and place the container you're mixing into it, you can warm the resin can make it cure faster this way, too. This works if you're trying to get a particular pattern, but your resin has a long working time. The resin I use has a 40 mins working time, which can give enough time for patterns to spread and mush out. If you're pouring a solid shape, like a small cat figure, this is a good way to get many pieces in a short time. It also thins the resin in the beginning, which can help with degassing. This is since the thinner liquid has a lower surface tension and viscosity, allowing bubbles to rise and come out more easily.

I was thinking to myself... wouldn't it be awesome to have resin crown molding? Make one big mold and make as many panels you need. You wouldn't be able to nail it in, so connecting it might be an issue.

A side note for anyone using (or thinking about using) dehydrators to dry/set/cure your craft projects... PLEASE don't use the same machine to dry your food after you've put craft stuff through it!
If you want to dry both food *and* craft things, get two machines. One for food, one for non-food. Probably different models if you can, or at the very least clearly mark the parts, so you don't mix up the trays and other components.
Traces of fumes and other residue can get embedded in the plastic, and even washing everything really well won't do a good enough job to make it food-safe again.

I've used a dehydrator to speed up my resin curing. Now I use my toaster oven, as it has a dehydrator setting. I also use it to bake tumblers for sublimation.
I love how it's great you test it all out so we others can learn from you and minimalize our negative experiences with it!!

So, what I'm hearing is, I could absolutely just use that DIY heat box I made in 5th grade and it would work just as well as the expensive machine? 🤔 (Shoe box covered with tin foil with a cutout on top for a clear plastic window that's left outside to absorb and hopefully intensify the heat of the sun)

I started working with resin in the beginning of 2013. At that time, there were people in the resin community using slow cookers and food dehydrators to cure resin. I bought one that year from target specifically for resin. It didn't have a temperature control, just an on/off switch. My resin pieces cured in an hour in that thing. Turned off after 45 minutes and left sitting for another 15 while it cooled down. I still have it. But I bought a new one recently that is rectangular with temperature control. The other one is round, and the trays slope downward towards the center which meant I had to level my pieces very well.
Completely totally agree! The resonator was originally 120 for only three shallow shelves also and if you didn't get ahold of them and get in their list to get the three free deeper shelves, oh well. I did and still never was contacted. I reached out to the company and also told them that the buttons don't work all the time. Because I had the machine over 30 days, oh well. But I got the 3 free deeper trays.. but so many projects got messed up and need a lot of work and some can't be fixed. Waste of money and resin.

I could see a use for dehydrators curing resin in fast turn around stuff AND when you add glitter etc to resin. You'd probably want to also run the resin through a vacuum chamber first though.
