      My children have a game where instead of dice they have to turn an arrow on a pace of cardboard - love a wheel of fortune (sorry for the weak explanation, I'm German and English is my third language). The axle for the arrow got lost but I could built a new one by layering small amounts of baking soda and drops of Ca. A little sanding and voila - spinning arrow and happy kids

    Did some experiments with the stuff myself, and found that coating the entire inside of the mould with a generous amount of nail polish and letting it dry completely lets you then fill that with baking soda and superglue and it pops right out. You can add mica powders to the nail polish too for a colored surface.

    another fun use with super glue is to mix it with talcum powder. make a mound of talcum powder with a dimple in top and add the super glue. mix it in a little at a time and you can make a paste and even get to a putty like consistency and it hardens up really nice while giving a decent amount of work time

    You can get synthetic (maybe acrylic?) felt at some craft stores. If you soak that with thin superglue, it will set extremely fast and leave you with a very hard substance. Once I did this with several layers of the felt (all in one go), and then I sanded it down and shaped it in a cabochon shape, to essentially make a cheap fake gem. It turned out surprisingly good for my first time trying something like that. Anyhow, part of my goal was to fill in the space in the felt with a clear substance, to see how it would look with backlighting. It looked pretty cool! I never had time to do anything interesting with it though.
    Anyhow, thought you might be interested. Maybe you can find a better use for this than I did.

    I already know all the answers to your questions at the beginning but I'm still watching the entire video since I love your content. Although I have a few tips: You can use baking powder in place of baking soda if you want to reduce the heat generated. From my experience both produce the same strength at the end. Alternatively, you can use thinner layers to reduce heat but it can be tricky to ensure that the next layer adheres to the first. It'll still be strong but you can peel off a layer if you pick at it.
    I'm not sure what you'll need to do for a mold since it adheres to silicone, wood, metal, paper, fabric, ceramics, and other materials. Once dry it does sand very easily and would polish too if you wanted to do that.
    edit: all types of the glue will cure faster with a base added but you need to put the baking soda on top of the thicker stuff. Also certain versions of the glue will only cure at the surface regardless of how thick or thin it is. I have had a thin mixture only immediately harden at the surface while the gel version had no issues hardening all the way through immediately.

    • @transientaardvark6231
      @transientaardvark6231 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Well, I use wax molds (that I make with a 3018 CNC) for resin. If you could control the temperature better (adding smaller amounts) then maybe that could also work with CA. The advantage being that it does not matter about sticking to the mold, you always have the option of melting the wax off. I suppose another (much more fiddly option) would be ceramic, like a plaster slip. A sand mold would probably contain the baking powder, although the CA glue would obviously soak away and I guess glue sand to the outside of the "dice"

    • @zebraloverbridget
      @zebraloverbridget 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@transientaardvark6231 sand would be easy to sand or buff off but then you'd need to deal with making the dice fair. It seems like the mold release helped which isn't a huge surprise. When fixing silicone with it it'll hold the silicone-silicone bond well but any on the surface can be carefully peeled off.
      Wax is a good idea if you can use the type with a higher melting point. The glue might harden in the correct place before the mold could get deformed.

    The reaction with baking soda, and how quickly it hardens and becomes inert in water, is why (gel) superglue is used so much in aquascaping! If I'm working out of water and want it to set quickly, I can just sprinkle some baking soda on and then blow it off/rinse it off before putting it in the tank. It's safe for your plants, fish, snails, shrimp. ...just don't forget to rinse until the baking soda doesn't fizz anymore if you don't want to potentially alter your pH....
    You can use it to attach pieces of wood to each other, or to stones to help weigh them down. You can even glue some plants to wood/rocks with it, namely epiphytes (they don't like their roots being covered, so a tiny dot of glue is great for perching them in cool-looking spots on branches and stones) and moss.
    Honestly, you can make so many useful things with a bit of superglue. You can make even *more* things if you have PETg and other foodsafe filaments for a 3D printer. I'd love to see you guys play with designing even more pet (fuzzy, feathery, scaley, wet...) friendly gadgets that could be printed out by everyone!

With any luck it won't cure too fast, but still pretty fast. You can use how different fillers react, flour, sand, chalk, clothes dryer lint...

    I didn't realize that not a lot of people knew how hard baking soda and superglue got. I've always used it as a kind of "quick cement filler" for cracks in things that couldn't be held together by superglue alone. Like when some wall decorations fell and a whole corner broke off, I layered glue and baking powder till it filled the void spaces and then painted it the same color. Did the same thing with some of the display ceramic decorations, but used gold paint on top for a "fool's gold kintsugi" effect. I've even used this to fix a broken fingernail before! We were at a party and one of my cousin's acrylic nail tips cracked right off and we had to cement it back on so it wasn't obvious in the pictures.
    Actually, acrylic nails are made with acrylic powder and a hardening liquid too. I wonder how that compares to baking soda and superglue as a resin alternative...

    If you liked those results, something easier to deal with, acrylic nail powder and liquid. It also forms a polymer. It comes in quite a lot of colors and works well with mica powder. It also won't stick to the mold, you still may want to release it though.

    Love the video as always guys. I work in a baking soda plant and thought I could throw out some info. Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) does expire, heat and time cause it to decay into sodium carbonate. Most baking soda you can buy is a #2 coarseness. If you ever try again you could use #1, it is very thin almost like powdered sugar. There is also stuff with TCP in it so it flows without clumping.

    from an aircraft technician I was told, when a helicopter rotor blade had a chip or little crack, they have special tape to repair it, but they would first use baking soda with super glue to fill the gap/crack to seal it and then apply the tape. He said, you wont believe how strong this is.
