I think they wanted heroes to have their own identity back when they created cent and creating a completeley unique sheild hero is difficult. Look at the sheild heroes in game they all have bashes, they all have attacks with supperior block properties, 3 of the 4 can feint heavies to bash, and they all have all guard.
There was also not as many heroes out at the time cent, shaman- and the others were coming out. People wanted a knight shield hero or a hammer hero. Its just unfortunate they made another *bash* hero instead of someone with a focus on defense or sword based attacks.
Yes it would be awesome if he could have a scutum. He would half to have another rework to match the fighting style of the scutum gladius combo or at the very least make it a great where he could get a scutum and fight with it properly so they don't half to do another rework.

There's actually a couple more new helmets that are a lot more historically authentic that you didn't talk about. The Macriana helmet especially looks the most authentic in my opinion, it has the rim, movable cheek plates and overall looks the most like a gallic helmet. They also added a late empire ridge helmet. It's a bit of a shame you didn't talk about them but I still loved the video anyways, great job as usual!

Didn't think he is playing it a lot. Since he 1. Didn't unlock very much till now as seen in the montage and 2. Somehow isn't aware that in fact you can "decorate" your gear with engravings etc. No hate though. He for sure has more important stuff to do than playing For Honor as much as his subscribers. In the end he is historian and not a gamer.

So Metatron, the Centurion does already actually have a helm in the game with the foldable cheek plates, in fact it looks almost exactly like the helmet you have there but it’s higher rarity and has the mask. That’s probably why they don’t have it because they wanted it to look different from the one they already had, even though yes, that helmet without the mask would be really cool.

They do have a helmet with foldable cheek guards it's just tied together. Its called the "macriana helm" and it looks similar to a helmet from the imperial era. Great vid👍

Kalkriese is a place in Germany where the remains of a big battle between Germanic tribes and Romans have been found. It's said that these are the remains of the famous battle of Varus aka the battle of Teutoburg forest. The armour type is named after the place where they have been found which is Kalkriese.
Centurion looks kinda strange without a shield, but this way he can have this agressive kicks and jumps. Not realistic, but cool and unique. But i'm curious what his moveset would look like with a shield. Also would've been cool to have different forms of each hero to choose, like Centurion with or without shield and stuff like that. But i guess it's too complicated and needs a lot more resources to implement this mechanic.
In the roman times centurions didhave the mask with helmet for face protection and not all centurions in Roman times had shields so I think it's perfect
But metatron, have you forgotten, that you can change your engravings? so there is no need in adding more decorations otherwise the engravings will overlap with them. I`m talking about musculata armour. that probably was the reason.

It wouldn’t make sense for them to introduce a shield at this point since so many players have picked him and connected with his identity. He’s meant to break turtles open and punch stuff, and with his rework that’s what he does. I totally understand why history buffs want him to have a shield, and back before he was released that would’ve made sense, but right now that would basically mean completely throwing out his current move set and animations, recording an entirely new move set that can’t build off anything he has currently and even clashes with his current identity, designing 30+ new shields (one for every weapon set), combining the hilt and guard into one item (which would screw a lot of people out of their customization), and pissing off everyone who was happy with how he was before. It’s just not practical at all.
Metatron, your first pronounciation of Kalkriese was correct. Kalkriese is a region in germany where the Varus Battle could've (or atleast a part of it) taken place.
A change from a gladius to a spatha would be a much easier change on the developers I think, they'd never change up animations in order to add a shield. You could do it, he'd just punch with the shield, the moveset wouldn't change. But Ubisoft wouldn't change that if it remained functionally the same.
You can add embossings to any chestplate, or engravings in other words. I really lilke the rework, he is now way mor viable from a competitive standpoint, which is probably why you know find him harder to play against:) We were just blessed that he got new armour along side the rework so there is always a chance of him getting more armor.
I know adding a shield would be more historically accurate but the purpose of the rework was to make his current playstyle more viable not to completely change it. And at this point his playstyle is so iconic making him another shield hero would anger a big part of the for honor community.
Well you have to look at the context on when Centurion was released. He was the first dlc hero, and he had to be unique. So they gave him more of a brawler type of fighting style (maybe hinting towards pankration/boxing). We would not get another hero with a shield until black prior was released, almost four years afterward centurion. Bp has a similar (but better) moveset to warlord (with obvious differences). So if they released another hero that was similar to a pre-exisiting hero they wouldn't have made much money off of his release. Also, he was released in mind to destroy the turtle meta with new mixups and bashes to crack open turtles, if they released him with a shield he would have been the biggest turtle of them all. Just looking at how roman legions fought it didn't leave much room for an interesting moveset that differed from other shield heroes (not to mention that sword & shield combo was meant to be used in formation). So as much as we want historical accuracy we also have to keep in mind the context of his release, which was: A) Be a unique hero that would sell. B) Crack open the annoying turtle meta. If he was released with a shield he would have most likely not have accomplished either task. Maybe being released with a spatha would have made more sense, but the gladius is easily recognizable by the masses (this is a triple A game, so it had to appeal to the masses). But let's look at Centurion now, he's fun to play and because of his massive amounts of charisma he is essentially the poster child of the game. If he was released with a shield would he still be the rockstar he is now? Maybe.
But anyways, great video! Always a fan, and you (as well as centurion) really got me interested in Roman history. If you need any tips of fighting against cent I can give a couple.
With Demon's Souls remake and Elden Ring coming out (hopefully) soon, it'd be cool if you could do some more Dark Souls armor evals - I really liked your analysis of both the "grounded" sets and the more fantasy ones, but I'm curious if some of the weirder ones (e.g. Lautrec's armor of favor or Shiva's eastern set) have are particularly impractical or simply lack a historical precedent.
@metatron, can you do a video on Armor and weapons scrapping. Would the army pick up all the metal scraps from a battlefield to recycle the precious metals? Would they have camp followers do that? Would they just have someone from the local towns come and buy the stuff they didnt want? How much armor was reused or repurposed( like at what point was it not worth repurposing)? Would they sell battlefield weapons to civilians like modern military surplus? Were armor and weapon shops filled with battlefield pickups like in RPGs?
1. Overlap Armor: the plate armor looks like it does overlap each plate slightly, no? 2. Muscle Armor: there are quite a few muscle armor chests (I think it’s his default), I think they just wanted to try a new one with the plain. You can put “emblems” on your armor, which take the form of metal engravings and such, to decorate his chest. A common one is a giant skull for “edgeturion”. The plain chest plate works well for these, as it is a lot more noticeable than when it competes with the muscles or plates. 3. Shield: ideally, heroes would have multiple weapons, using primaries such as spears and longswords and shields along with backups. Considering that the game is in it’s later phases, though, this would likely be a For Honor 2 thing. 4. Fighting Cent: ye, the new Centurion has a very aggressive kit. His kick is indeed faster and unreactable if he’ll throw it or just dodge, and his punch mixup allows a lot of variation. His weakness lies in that he has no dodge attack and mediocre defense, so take the offense against him as much as possible (especially if you have bashes).
I believe the lack of Overlapping plates in the Segmentata might be due to Clipping and Modeling issues since making a Game Model with too many moving parts may cause physics glitches and bugs in the game.

i agre with you about shild, because alot of blocks he does is with his unarmed hand where instead of shield he uses his forarm bracers, also he perform alot of punches with said hand. It looks like that he was originally desighened with shild, where they used mocap and fighting animation but then they removed shild for some unknown reason.
You have to rep him up to legendary gear to get a good look at the much better customization options. There are 3 other helms that look historically accurate. You could ask someone to send footage of them.
I'm surprised you didn't go into the different versions of the scale armor they have for him, specifically the Rare variants with campaign honors strapped on the front (can't remember the term for those honors). That combined with the Rare Galea variants with the 2 piece cheek-plates that also have a reinforcing plate on the front: that's a textbook Centurion to me. EDIT: Found them: the Helmets from the Achaea, Epirus and Creta sets & the Armor from the Dacia, Amarantus, and Praevalitana sets
The shield could be balance by any guards breaks made against the Centurion that are successful could throw him back more and any attacks he incorporates the shield would have high end lag becuase of the same reason, a scutum is flipping heavy, using it aggressively would be risky and tired someone out, especially in a duel.
One other reason as to why they removed the cheekplates could be that they wanted to recicle the metal, since removing them from them helm would still leave you with a functional helm, whereas trying to recycle metal from other looted pieces of roman gear might ruin the item entirely.
I think they left the breast plate intentionally plain in order for player added embossings to be more pronounced and visible, in a way that would be decorating the armor like you've mentioned in the video. And hey they finally have a set of gear where he doesn't wear pants and has sandals.
a reason lore wise for them not using shields could be that the centurions "came to aid the knights" and as far as i know the shield strenght was in the formation which the knights dont use and when they noticed this, they chose not to use the shield to remove weight and being able to adapt to knights fighting technics and strategies(?
I haven't logged on For Honor for 6 months or so but ive been missing my battle axe Centurion also has few campaign harnesses with different badge options as alternatives for a centurion wearing segmentia or a cuirass, I personally would have put a cane or vine staff in the off hand rather than a legionaries shield. I'd give the vortigurn a republican/imperial and late period legionnaire appearance options for the players to RP as Roman.
As always I loved the video but you left behind the other three new armor sets ;-; dont know if you are going to see this commentary but if you want I have all of the four I could send the videos of the new armors and I think you would like the helmet not the armor (because of ubisoft's fetish with spikes) but the Rapax helmet is a really good one and there is one with a brim hell yeah
chief they do allow for decorations, and they do have fancy versions of the bulging chest plate (not even gonna try to spell the Latin version) I think its locked behind higher reputations but u there is one with copper, silver and gold lining. 1 more point in the customise section there are these things called embrosing, now there aren't any dedicated to Centurion but u can get stuff like some generic patterns, a rose, a reaper... these have a 3d effect and all too.
If you get to reputation 8 you get guaranteed legendary gear from finishing games and opening packs and you’ll get to see his other armour sets that look better than his low level versions such as the brim you was on about and more decorative gold trimmed muscular armour.
Just putting it out there like other comments, there were multiple sets of armor released for the Centurion so the set of armor you reviewed was only 1 of 4.
I prefer the concept of using a longer sword/ spatha (Greek for sword) or two Gladys. Because the scutum is much more group battlefield tactical formation device even more than the Aspis. As we do see single duels with shield and spear on Ancient Greek pottery. But the duel wield makes sense given the scenario where he’s lost is shield and foe ation so he picks up another gladius.
Speculative theory, about the cheekplate, as you say, they looted it and used it.. However if the barbarians didnt see a use for it aswell, they could strip it to sell/smelt, or take as "proof" of kills and use it to either collect reward from clan(like a bounty or scalp system). Again its more speculative.
Did you not look at the other 3 helmets Metatron because there's literally an imperial gallic helm as well as a 5th century castle burgh, they're pretty much exactly replicas of historical models.

Centurion looks kinda strange without a shield, but this way he can have this agressive kicks and jumps. Not realistic, but cool and unique. But i'm curious what his moveset would look like with a shield. Also would've been cool to have different forms of each hero to choose, like Centurion with or without shield and stuff like that. But i guess it's too complicated and needs a lot more resources to implement this mechanic.

In the roman times centurions didhave the mask with helmet for face protection and not all centurions in Roman times had shields so I think it's perfect
But metatron, have you forgotten, that you can change your engravings? so there is no need in adding more decorations otherwise the engravings will overlap with them. I`m talking about musculata armour. that probably was the reason.

It wouldn’t make sense for them to introduce a shield at this point since so many players have picked him and connected with his identity. He’s meant to break turtles open and punch stuff, and with his rework that’s what he does.
I totally understand why history buffs want him to have a shield, and back before he was released that would’ve made sense, but right now that would basically mean completely throwing out his current move set and animations, recording an entirely new move set that can’t build off anything he has currently and even clashes with his current identity, designing 30+ new shields (one for every weapon set), combining the hilt and guard into one item (which would screw a lot of people out of their customization), and pissing off everyone who was happy with how he was before. It’s just not practical at all.
The Chalcidian helmets have moveable cheek plates too, although they folded outwards and upwards instead of inwards!
Metatron, your first pronounciation of Kalkriese was correct. Kalkriese is a region in germany where the Varus Battle could've (or atleast a part of it) taken place.
A change from a gladius to a spatha would be a much easier change on the developers I think, they'd never change up animations in order to add a shield. You could do it, he'd just punch with the shield, the moveset wouldn't change. But Ubisoft wouldn't change that if it remained functionally the same.

You can add embossings to any chestplate, or engravings in other words. I really lilke the rework, he is now way mor viable from a competitive standpoint, which is probably why you know find him harder to play against:)
We were just blessed that he got new armour along side the rework so there is always a chance of him getting more armor.

I know adding a shield would be more historically accurate but the purpose of the rework was to make his current playstyle more viable not to completely change it. And at this point his playstyle is so iconic making him another shield hero would anger a big part of the for honor community.
Well you have to look at the context on when Centurion was released. He was the first dlc hero, and he had to be unique. So they gave him more of a brawler type of fighting style (maybe hinting towards pankration/boxing). We would not get another hero with a shield until black prior was released, almost four years afterward centurion. Bp has a similar (but better) moveset to warlord (with obvious differences). So if they released another hero that was similar to a pre-exisiting hero they wouldn't have made much money off of his release.
Also, he was released in mind to destroy the turtle meta with new mixups and bashes to crack open turtles, if they released him with a shield he would have been the biggest turtle of them all. Just looking at how roman legions fought it didn't leave much room for an interesting moveset that differed from other shield heroes (not to mention that sword & shield combo was meant to be used in formation).
So as much as we want historical accuracy we also have to keep in mind the context of his release, which was:
A) Be a unique hero that would sell.
B) Crack open the annoying turtle meta.
If he was released with a shield he would have most likely not have accomplished either task.
Maybe being released with a spatha would have made more sense, but the gladius is easily recognizable by the masses (this is a triple A game, so it had to appeal to the masses).
But let's look at Centurion now, he's fun to play and because of his massive amounts of charisma he is essentially the poster child of the game. If he was released with a shield would he still be the rockstar he is now? Maybe.
But anyways, great video! Always a fan, and you (as well as centurion) really got me interested in Roman history.
If you need any tips of fighting against cent I can give a couple.
With Demon's Souls remake and Elden Ring coming out (hopefully) soon, it'd be cool if you could do some more Dark Souls armor evals - I really liked your analysis of both the "grounded" sets and the more fantasy ones, but I'm curious if some of the weirder ones (e.g. Lautrec's armor of favor or Shiva's eastern set) have are particularly impractical or simply lack a historical precedent.

Armor and weapons scrapping. Would the army pick up all the metal scraps from a battlefield to recycle the precious metals? Would they have camp followers do that? Would they just have someone from the local towns come and buy the stuff they didnt want? How much armor was reused or repurposed( like at what point was it not worth repurposing)? Would they sell battlefield weapons to civilians like modern military surplus? Were armor and weapon shops filled with battlefield pickups like in RPGs?
1. Overlap Armor: the plate armor looks like it does overlap each plate slightly, no?
2. Muscle Armor: there are quite a few muscle armor chests (I think it’s his default), I think they just wanted to try a new one with the plain. You can put “emblems” on your armor, which take the form of metal engravings and such, to decorate his chest. A common one is a giant skull for “edgeturion”. The plain chest plate works well for these, as it is a lot more noticeable than when it competes with the muscles or plates.
3. Shield: ideally, heroes would have multiple weapons, using primaries such as spears and longswords and shields along with backups. Considering that the game is in it’s later phases, though, this would likely be a For Honor 2 thing.
4. Fighting Cent: ye, the new Centurion has a very aggressive kit. His kick is indeed faster and unreactable if he’ll throw it or just dodge, and his punch mixup allows a lot of variation. His weakness lies in that he has no dodge attack and mediocre defense, so take the offense against him as much as possible (especially if you have bashes).
I believe the lack of Overlapping plates in the Segmentata might be due to Clipping and Modeling issues since making a Game Model with too many moving parts may cause physics glitches and bugs in the game.

i agre with you about shild, because alot of blocks he does is with his unarmed hand where instead of shield he uses his forarm bracers, also he perform alot of punches with said hand. It looks like that he was originally desighened with shild, where they used mocap and fighting animation but then they removed shild for some unknown reason.
You’d probably enjoy his higher tier helmets that came out with his new sets.

You have to rep him up to legendary gear to get a good look at the much better customization options. There are 3 other helms that look historically accurate. You could ask someone to send footage of them.

I'm surprised you didn't go into the different versions of the scale armor they have for him, specifically the Rare variants with campaign honors strapped on the front (can't remember the term for those honors). That combined with the Rare Galea variants with the 2 piece cheek-plates that also have a reinforcing plate on the front: that's a textbook Centurion to me.
EDIT: Found them: the Helmets from the Achaea, Epirus and Creta sets & the Armor from the Dacia, Amarantus, and Praevalitana sets
The shield could be balance by any guards breaks made against the Centurion that are successful could throw him back more and any attacks he incorporates the shield would have high end lag becuase of the same reason, a scutum is flipping heavy, using it aggressively would be risky and tired someone out, especially in a duel.
One other reason as to why they removed the cheekplates could be that they wanted to recicle the metal, since removing them from them helm would still leave you with a functional helm, whereas trying to recycle metal from other looted pieces of roman gear might ruin the item entirely.
I think they left the breast plate intentionally plain in order for player added embossings to be more pronounced and visible, in a way that would be decorating the armor like you've mentioned in the video.
And hey they finally have a set of gear where he doesn't wear pants and has sandals.

a reason lore wise for them not using shields could be that the centurions "came to aid the knights" and as far as i know the shield strenght was in the formation which the knights dont use and when they noticed this, they chose not to use the shield to remove weight and being able to adapt to knights fighting technics and strategies(?

Centurion also has few campaign harnesses with different badge options as alternatives for a centurion wearing segmentia or a cuirass, I personally would have put a cane or vine staff in the off hand rather than a legionaries shield. I'd give the vortigurn a republican/imperial and late period legionnaire appearance options for the players to RP as Roman.
As always I loved the video but you left behind the other three new armor sets ;-; dont know if you are going to see this commentary but if you want I have all of the four I could send the videos of the new armors and I think you would like the helmet not the armor (because of ubisoft's fetish with spikes) but the Rapax helmet is a really good one and there is one with a brim hell yeah

The Dimachaerus did not use a couple of Gladii but a different kind of swords, Siccae, longer and with curved points for better tissue laceration
chief they do allow for decorations, and they do have fancy versions of the bulging chest plate (not even gonna try to spell the Latin version)
I think its locked behind higher reputations but u there is one with copper, silver and gold lining.
1 more point in the customise section there are these things called embrosing, now there aren't any dedicated to Centurion but u can get stuff like some generic patterns, a rose, a reaper...
these have a 3d effect and all too.
If you get to reputation 8 you get guaranteed legendary gear from finishing games and opening packs and you’ll get to see his other armour sets that look better than his low level versions such as the brim you was on about and more decorative gold trimmed muscular armour.
Just putting it out there like other comments, there were multiple sets of armor released for the Centurion so the set of armor you reviewed was only 1 of 4.

I prefer the concept of using a longer sword/ spatha (Greek for sword) or two Gladys. Because the scutum is much more group battlefield tactical formation device even more than the Aspis. As we do see single duels with shield and spear on Ancient Greek pottery. But the duel wield makes sense given the scenario where he’s lost is shield and foe
