I find it cool how they clearly have looked into history, and find inspiration from real warriors and equipment, even if the game itself is not historically accurate. It's a good way to get people more interested in and excited about history than if they just had a generic knight, a generic samurai, etc. Also, not gonna lie- I couldn't help but laugh at that shout-out in the end of the video xD
XD I mean...I was already a big fan of Norse Myth stuff and as soon as I saw the Vikings(mainly the Raider) I knew I was gunna love this game (And other Heroes look cool Very Well)
Well, the story of the game is that it's centuries after a world-altering apocalypse that fucked shit up all to hell. Resource scarcity and constant multi-front conflict have retarded technological development so that despite being in "modern day," or possibly even in the future, everything is all retro. In short, they actually give you a good reason why it's not historically accurate.
Lol even as a Korean, why would Korea be a faction? Our main fighting force was archers and horse archers for the majority of our history with the infantry pikemen and cannoneers also being an important part. We don't really have a developed "swordsman" culture nor did we go through the intense civil wars in Japan and Europe that gave birth to the archetypal knight and samurai in popular imagination. It would have been extreme pandering and historical butchery to make a Korean faction, bc you would have to resort to exaggeration and lies.
If you're talking about the Joseon dynasty that was strongly influenced by Neo-Confucianism, maybe. But not at all the case for Korean kingdoms that existed before.
Also, samurai never fought knights or vikings, but they did go to war against Korea, so that could influence player choice in a way that didn't exist before. Since Japan didn't invade China until both of the in-game factions had finished, it's still as much of a hypothetical as samurai fighting any of the other factions
And Tiandi天地 as u said heaven&earth, generally speaking it refers to the conception of universe. Also, shaolin trainers think the technique of staff is the basic of all weapons, that's one reason why staff is important in shaolin martial art; another reason is killing is a sin in Buddhism, staff is sort of " peaceful weapon"; the shaolin monks in history actually has joint the real battle several times, for example in the Ming dynasty they helped the southern garrison defending the invasion of pirates, but in that case they changed the flexible wooden staffs to iron staffs, well, to kill better. Ps. speak about wulin, 林lin itself yes means forest but also can be used to define a certain territory, so wulin can be better understood as "the world of martial art". And about the amour, maybe you can search明光铠, might help
I believe Tiandi's characters could also be written as 天帝, Which means "Heavenly Emperor." Which would also explain why a dragon appears in the Marching Fire Cinematic, since the dragon represents the power of the Heavenly Emperor in Chinese Theology I believe.
Time to talk about Chinese armor, weapons and history. A thing im kinda like in a "noob" level. That would be nice if you could talk more about this things.
Please don't because most of the information on the internet regarding Chinese weapons and armors are wrong. I read books about it so I know how awkward that can be when I see these content made by foreigners. I won't suggest talking about it unless Metatron really takes the time to read and research into this stuff. You can visit this channel to learn more about Chinese army in the Han dynasty. th-cam.com/video/yhEOlSSDMgs/w-d-xo.html
I'm actually very knowledgeable on the suggest, since I reed the actual period informations about armor. If you want to learn things about chinese armor, you have two main blogs to visit,, the first is Great Ming military, the other is Dragon's Armory. They are really good and accurate website and I hope you will learn good things on them
Metatron seems to not know a lot about the subject sadly. Quickly, in this time period, high ranking chinese warrior would generally have a winged helmet, with sometime a mask, and a armor made either of lamellar or "mountain pattern armor" that were sleeveless, and hade big shoulder guards, long weist protector and clothes wrap around the weist, with individual greaves and braces, just like my profile picture. They could also use brigandine armor with long waist protector going down the the mid lower leg. They were used in conjonction with a type of arm armor called bi fu and made a large scales of metal overlaping either down or up.
For starters, the chinese use a lot of pikes, crossbows and pavise shields. They have specialised armour for each ranks and each types of roles in a battle. They do have good cavalry army if compared to western counterpart, but its still quite weak if compared to the nomads. For raids, ambushes and guerilla warfare, the choices are swords/sabers w/o shields. There are varieties like wolf fang spear or langxian for crowd control. With gunpowder technology, they have medieval cannons, flamethrowers, multiple rocket launchers, sword attached with fireworks and mines. Their amour changes throughout dynasty but they mainly only use lamellar armour, sometimes with or without chestplate or plackart. The only special amour in China is Tang dynasty mountain shaped lamellar armour 山文铠 since it offer better protection than averahe lamellar. But its production speed is too slow to meet their expectation so they abandoned it in the end. Throughout ages, they prefer quantity over quality.
i agree but i think they do a pretty fine job putting some armor that resembles more the real deal and you can put or remove painting in the armor so it can look more authentic.
And now to turn this kinda weird...but the female raider tho...I mean she could probably crush a melon between her fucking thighs, and let’s not forget the ironing board that is her stomach area. In all seriousness though tho, yeah..the raider looks...Mm yeah, and the warlord does look quite realistic, I just wish I could have the Centurion without his mask. Most of the knight characters look decent. Well, most of them..the sneaky agile dude..actually that class can’t change gender can it? Ok then, the sneaky agile woman..all the others though, yeah they look good. (On about the knight peoples here)
Geezus Christ you Mandrin good mate! You and Jon Cena really surprised me- I really didn't expected it, but once I got it and saw your skills its pure serendipity man :D
TianDi should be just 天地, which is used pretty much widely across many places to express broadness. You could literally think that means "everything" or "from heaven to earth." If you go into classical literature, the famous 《千字文》 (Thousand Character Classic) around 500 A.D. starts with ”天地玄黄宇宙洪荒” to express the vastness of the nature and universe.
关羽 is always the great warrior, and he is general, the general character fits him perfectly. 天地 makes zero sense since it is neither a person's name, or a title. But 天帝 is a title. And the look of the character, fits a king in armor, and the weapon (a sword) is traditionally associated with person in power. It would look like tiandi is a mythology based character. if you look the new characters' class name, they are all some sort of title. Another thought, if they use non-sense name, even 天敌 makes better sense than 天地. we really need to see what is the Chinese character to be sure.
Just discovered your channel and I must say this is remarkable! For the Jiang Jun(将军) due to his helmet and age appearance, I think the concept is a cocktail of Guan Yu(关羽) and Huang Zhong (黄忠)He was one of the Five Tiger Generals(五虎将) of Shu Han(蜀汉) kingdom (Guan Yu(关羽), Zhang Fei(张飞), Zhao Yun(赵云), Ma Chao(马超), and Huang Zhong) According to various stories, despite his old age he was able to wield da dao (大刀) that similar weight & size of Guan Yu's and he once had an even battle againt Guan Yu. On top of that, he is a very skillful archer that time. Honestly I am clueless about the Tian Di, I will leave that alone too. For nu xia(女侠),we should focus on the character 侠. The meaning is quite complex and I think the closest English translation would be vigilante. China has been history of autocracy means a lot of injustice and corruption, people wish of somebody (in this case, the侠) with guts outside the system to punish the bad guys, especially those in the corridor of power. Ancient China has gender discrimination so women don't have the opportunity to learn martial arts. So, a vigilante, in particular a female vigilante adds a lot of romance.
While I love the idea of a Mongolian warrior, it most likely won’t work due to their fighting style revolving 95% around using bows on horseback, two things that can’t be used in non feat situations sadly. Don’t let this comment stop you from brain storming new ideas for the game tho!
I would love if you did a quick video of guan yu when they are released. I've been a fan of the three kingdoms, having read the books and playing dynasty warriors 3-7 when I was younger and nostalgic for the later ones and he was my second favorite character, besides Zhou Yu. I recently gave up my computer because I was highly addicted, essentially playing games or watching netflix any time I wasn't working and finally got the willpower to have my friend hold my computer for me. Now I don't have access to a computer to play him when he's released and I love your videos, so I'd much prefer to watch you playing than a random streamer who yells at every other thing that happens like it's the end of the world. Appreciate the content Metatron, keep it up! You're awesome.
When researching ninja i have occasionally run across mention of something which is described almost as a Chinese counterpart but i haven't found much information on them. Apparently they were known in China as the 'forest demons'. I would love to see a historic video about them, if you feel so inclined. Thanks for all the great content!
You're talking about the lin kuei, they did not exist it was something made up by guy named Randal Brown trying to cash in on the ninja hype back in the day.
戰國春秋 no they're not the ones that made it up that was Randall Brown actually he came up with a fake backstory and everything how they start in China then move to Korea rename themselves something with a "S" can't remember then move to Japan but the Mortal Kombat series use the name guess "Forest demons" just sounds really cool.
Always great to see you analyze For Honor, Metatron. While I am looking forward to them, I'm probably going to mostly be taking them out with my Warden and Lawbro. For the Iron Legion!
I'm wondering if Shaolin, the character using the staff, was inspired from Sun Wukong, from the Chinese litterature. This character is present in many videogames, such as League of Legends, Warframe, ... And I think Dragon Ball character Son Goku is based on Sun Wukong as well.
Not exactly...Shaolin monks are pretty well-known for quarterstaff, it's like the "default" weapon for them. Of course, this being a fantasy game, Sun Wukong elements get thrown in as well.
No Shaolin monks has always used staffs and not because of sun wukong, they used it because it was cheap to make, which is good for a monastery, it was non lethal most of the time which helps the monks uphold their oath to never take life, it was good for carrying water Shaolin monks would often carry two buckets of water on both ends of a staff, and lastly because most chinese weapons are staff based (spears, tridents, halberds, etc.) the staff also served as good replacement for practicing all kinda of different martial arts.
While I'd like to see that too, I don't see any of them dethroning the Lawbringer which is kind of dissapointing. On the other hand I don't see any of them being worse than Shaman so Vikings will still hold the prestigious title of having the worst warrior in their circle. Then again, I'm not an expert.
*+AniimeFaan* Aramusha is worse than the Shaman; Metatron mistook the tattoos on his bare chest for the grain of a wooden breastplate. At least the Shaman has leather and a buckler on her back - the only things Aramusha has even resembling armor are his shoulder pads and his hat.
For the character TianDi, it's definitely 天帝 in Chinese, meaning Heavenly Warlord/King, look up the Four Heavenly Kings for reference, a commonly known traditional Chinese Buddism set of figures that are still being worshiped in temples to date. You're correct on noticing the armor on the character being a fantasy-inspired one, for the set derives mostly from fantastical writings/paintings, rather than real-life soldiers.
It's been a while since I was in For Honor, but I like the looks of these. Really hope they add an Indian, Mongol, or Persian/Middle Eastern faction. They all had massive empires I'd love to see in game. Japanese vs Chinese vs Mongols vs Indian vs Arabs vs Knights vs Vikings.
Since the Chinese faction is in play, does the community think that a Mongolian warrior should be included as well? Mongolians did fought against the Chinese but they also fought early Japanese forces. At Tsushima, Iki, and other islands were invaded by them. Please leave a comment and/or any suggestions you wish to include.
uzunaru1 .....Mongols usually fight on horseback though, not that they don't fight dismounted but they are more famous for mounted warfare. I guess for me it would be cool for them to incorporate a Mesoamerican warrior faction in there like Aztec since they do have armor/shield to go with the weaponry.
I'm all for Zulu and Ottoman/Persian. I'm aware that "historically speaking" the Zulu wouldn't be a strong contender, but they did beat the absolute piss out of the British for a bit.
I'm super glad that another large studio is making ancient chinese content in a "historical" game with the first being CA with Total War: Three Kingdoms and although I am more familiar with total war and the Paradox grand strategy, this kind of makes me want to try For Honour. One faction that would be interesting to see would be a Slavic one with Hussars, Cossacks and Druzhina (A sort of viking-like knight wearing a combination of scale-like plates and chainmil) You should also review Imperator Rome when it comes out.
Still hyped from E3 and now Metatron's doing a historical evaluation on the new heroes. Awesome. EDIT: And yes, I'd very much look forward to some gameplay.
I can't wait to see the next two Chinese hero's (remember each faction gets 6 hero's now) we're hopefully going to get a hero wielding a dandao, and possibly someone with a rope dart (with a long ranged attack like the shinobi) great video! I love Chinese and Japanese weapons and armour can't wait to hear your opinion on the wu lin move sets
I would like to see Indian, Arabian, Persian, & Javanese warriors for mercenary faction (Asia) for future season. For Europe, Africa, & maybe America??, something like hoplite, Medjay (ACO anyone?!), navajo warrior, & Mayan warriors. This game has unlimited possibilities because the lore itself prepared for it.
A hoplite warrior by himself wasn't particularly effective, the strength of the ancient Greek armies laid in their well organized phalanx formations, so portraying one as an independent hero would be somewhat inaccurate (yet very cool looking nevertheless). Egyptian warriors were almost unarmored and their effectiveness was limited to their local fighting conditions. Same goes for the Mayans and ancient North American nations, they were too lightly armed and protected to be convincing in a medieval setting.
The problem with making a new faction out of Persians, Arabs, Ottomans, Mamluks, Saracens etc is that they mostly used some variations of scimitar (kilij, shamshir, saif and so on and so forth) on foot. At best you can make two classes (scimitar + shield and double scimitars), not really enough for a full faction. Sure they also used maces and axes, but the Knight/Viking players will probably go RAGEEEEE if a mace/axe warrior is added to a non-knight/non-viking faction.
@Croz Raven That's the dilemma - they totally deserve a full faction, but do not have enough variation in weaponry/associated warrior culture to make one, and lumping them together with existing factions will feel extra-awkward, even moreso than Romans/Highlander.
I think they should have an African faction. Egyptian, Moor, Mali, Zulu, and Masai to name a few. Weapons could be the iklwa, scimitar, kopesh, hunga munga, Sudanese sword and shield, etc. They would certainly be something unique.
I don't know a lot about it, but didn't the Zulus only use like spears, wooden clubs and shields? And not even axes or bows? Though Egypt would be pretty cool
An African inspired faction would certainly be dope. Maybe it could even include some elements from Carthage as it is attached to Africa? I think that an African/ middle eastern faction is the most likely next faction, if we get one. Persia, the Ottoman empire, Egypt. That rough area definitely has plenty of pop culture standing to draw inspiration from.
Egypt and Carthage are more related to near easterners than to Africa. a country from central Africa would be the real representative of Africa instead of Egypt or Carthage.
Tiandi => 田地 => Rice paddy I'm joking, of course. To be honest, even as a native Mandarin-speaker, I'm not sure myself (then again, I don't look into Chinese history or Chinese folklore/literature). Thanks for making these videos for us, Metatron! Keep up the wonderful work! EDIT: After reading the comments below, I wanted to add this: Don't let those criticizing your Mandarin get to you; I personally think that as a non-native Mandarin speaker, you're doing great! Keep learning, and rock on!
It's not the number of hours he spends...it's the number of days! *sings* Eight days a week...he studies new languages...eight days a week...is just enough to keep ahead!
Great video, the reason i loved the game is because its so unique and the representation of the characters is always great. Please do some more research on the Shaolin and the combat staff, i always loved watching staff wielding fighters in kung fu movies.
Holy shit. I haven’t seen a metatron video in a while and I have to say that I love the haircut along with the facial hair. Immediately reminded me of a classic Roman soldier or even civilian man.
做得非常好!喜欢你的视频,梅塔特隆!very nice video! love to see ur videos, especially the ROMA, thx for ur hard working! 天地 i think it means the leader, 天 means the sky, 地 means the earth, 天地 in Chinese i think it means a man stands on ground and faces the sky, fears nothing, thats 天地.
About the monk’s staff, I do not know anything regarding the fighting style, but I do know the reasons that the monks often choose staffs as main weapons are: 1. There was a famous historical/mythical incident during early Tang Dynasty, that, in time of danger, some Shaolin monks with staffs came to the aid of the latterly very famous emperor, Tang Taizong Li Shimin ( 唐太宗李世民 ), since then, staffs are considered as Shaolin monks’ iconic weapon in Chinese culture. 2. The staffs are considered by the monks as “non-lethal” weapons, so the monks basically choose staffs rather than any kinds of swords or polearms for a religious purpose, even on the battle field, they use staffs instead of other weapons that would be considered as “lethal.” 3. In ancient China, steel or iron are relatively expansive. As the original idea of monks practicing/teaching martial arts is mainly about making poor people being able to defend themselves, they focused on hand-to-hand combat, and on cheap, easy-to-make weapons like staffs.
TIANDI I think just mean general infantry. They were generally not refer as such in chinese. But if it mean heaven and earth, then it is everything. Might be a movie or literary reference as well, if so it is not a well known one.
To be honest, the character Tiandi shall be the one who called generals (将军). Because his armor is the Mingguang armor in Tang dynasty. And Tiandi is a secret cult that fought against the Qing dynasty in Chinese history.
Seems like they fit quite well with the rest of the factions, they've got the same low-fantasy vibe as everybody else. Realistic enough that you can pick the characters apart and note what inspired them, but with a distinct flair that makes them a bit "bigger than life" so to speak.
For Honour is, at least slightly, inspired by pop culture as much as it is inspired by History. As a (half) Korean, I can say that a Korean faction just wouldn't have made much sense. China and Japan have much more obvious warrior archetypes to choose from. Though I don't know much about Korean history, I can't exactly picture an archetypical Korean warrior. From pop culture alone, I can easily picture a knight, Viking, samurai and even a Chinese warrior. I'd say that China, on a pop culture standpoint is more well known for kung-fu films than weapon+ armour wielding warriors, but they still have a bigger mainstream image of the typical Chinese warrior(s) than Korea, sadly. I'd love to see a Korean faction, or even just a Korean warrior. But I'm imagining an archer, or a warrior on horseback, or someone in a spiky turtle ship. All that wouldn't fit in for Honour. And what faction to fold them into? That's another issue there.
If the Romans got folded into the Knights then the Korean warriors might get folded into the Chinese faction, seeing how Korea and China were allies for much of their history (well, not "equal" allies, but allies nonetheless).
I'm fairly certain that the staff the Shaolin uses, is a Hou Gun staff (Monkey staff) which is very flexible and swift. I think this because the kick ability in his moveset, shows him balancing on his staff while delivering three kicks which is commonly used in the hou gun fighting style. Also one of his early executions in the game, he leans on his staff whilst looking around which also is commonly used by Hou Gun practitioners. It could either be that or just a regular Bo staff.
And they will also make interactions between heroes when they're facing each other. For example if a Warden meets a Kensei in the battlefield and they enter duel state they will talk or maybe mocks or even praise the opponent's skill throughout battle. Each character will also have their own self commentary about the surrounding battlefield when they're free roaming.
@@merdufer is it really that difficult? I've been learning it, not too good yet, but my understanding is that it's not that hard, apart from upper level grammatical structures and the writing system. Tones take a while to perfect, but so does any foreign sound. I did three years of spanish back in grade school, and still can't roll my r's very well, but I wouldn't call Spanish a hard language :)
@@owlblocksdavid4955 In Spanish, not being able to roll the "r"s well usually does not affect comprehension, outside of some amusing misunderstandings with things like "pero" and "perro." In Chinese, if you get the tones wrong, sentences end up with completely different meanings. You could be asking for a piece chewing gum (你有没有香口胶) and ended up soliciting sexual favors instead (你有没有想口交). Same sentence, just different tones.
I really look forward to the Tiandi and Nuxia. The Tiandi looks to have a cool playstyle from what we've seen of it so far, and the Nuxia looks cool with the hook swords. I like her armor design too
I talk as a person who loves the korean history (and my picture is a proof), so don't hate me for this: if there were the Koreans as a faction in this game, the best period to choose would be the Three Kingdoms Period (obviously the Three Kingdoms period of Korea, not that of China), because it was the most glorious and original period of the korean history and in the other periods the Koreans were not particularly famous for their ability in the melee combat... (we could talk about the differences in the centuries, the styles decribed in the Muyedobotongji and Muyesinbo and so on, but to be honest in general the Korean warriors in the Goryeo and Joseon period are not iconic and cool for the mass). But the problem with the period of Silla, Goguryeo, Baekje and Gaya is that we know quite well only two or three "cool" classes of warriors (for example the Hwarang of Silla and the Gaemamusa of Goguryeo [the heavy knight in the picture]) and even so, the vast majority of the people still don't know them (how sad!). Unfortunately, it is absolutely normal that they have chosen the chinese instead of the koreans for all these reasons.
The GhostHero ahah, no, honestly I think that this is not ok because we are talking about two different cultures with a different national history and we are also talking about two proud countries that probably would never accept such a compromise... (I agree with dragonborn express)
Andrea Gullo yeah I understand but remember that the muyedobotongji is a ming manual that as been given to Korea and modified and translated. Remember that the ming dynasty were ally with Korea against the Japanese during the imjin war, the wokou pirate, and the Mongolian/jurchen raider. They shared technology and strategies and its way less far fetch to put a Korean in a Chinese faction that putting the Chinese in the samurai faction
The GhostHero I knew that a lot of styles and weapons were from China but I knew also that the Muyedobotongji was written by a korean warrior named Baek Dong-soo; moreover a lot of martial styles were korean styles because the koreans were better mounted archers and mounted swordsmen (remember the ssang-geom style for example)...
I believe Tian Di is directly translated as "Heaven Earth" and the meaningful translation would be "Mortal enemy of man", or "untouchables" (but in the context of danger rather than contempt). I think it literally means the greatest warrior of the evil faction. So yes, outcasts indeed.
They did have metal armor but not as good quality as the europeans did, in fact it might have been inferior to european metal, but that is debatable since they didn't historically fight each other since the japanese were very isolated.
Since this game takes place in a world where the Knights and samurai live on the same continent and therefore same resources, the Samurai and knight need to have equal quality of armor unless one fraction has mire control of resources but the other fractions can melt down the armor and weapons of defeated warriors.
Would love it if you did a video about the Zhanhu (Or Sunda as some people preffer to call the class even though that's just the male characters name) and how historically accurate it is etc. Love your videos keep up the great work!
i recently saw someone get scolded (and rightly so) for suggesting that all these wulin characters should just be lumped in with the samurai faction. obviously not a good idea right? we can all agree? SO WHY THE HELL DO WE HAVE ROMANS IN WITH THE KNIGHTS HUH?? ARRRRGH I DARE YOU TO MAKE LESS SENSE UBISOFT!!!
Know your facts. The Knights are the most direct descendants of the former (Roman) Empire in the game lore. That was already obvious since release, way before they introduced Centurion and Gladiator. Japanese/Samurai and Chinese are two different people from different places. I also guess that this fourth Chinese faction will be an external actual Empire, not a part of the fallen Empire who rose to independence like Samurai and Vikings are supposed to be (according to the game's lore of course).
Yeah! For that matter, why is a Scottish Gaelic Highlander fighting for the Vikings!? …Actually, I kind of like how they explained that one; that they made a deal with the Vikings long ago and the oaths have come due. I also appreciate that they had the Highlander speak Scottish Gaelic (as I suggested on their forums). Still, I would have preferred to see the highlanders be part of their own Celtic/Gaelic faction...
Matthew St. Cyr Maybe that's because the Vikings are supposed to represent the overall nordic [EDIT: nothern] "barbarian" people conquered by the Empire, so it's not really worth the effort for them to create another sub-faction. Samurai are supposed to be eastern conquered people. So my guess is that the Chinese will take the role of Persians/Sassanids who were always in conflict with the former western Empire but never conquered each other.
Also, Gaelic have a big Norse ancestry and for example, the gallowglass, warrior from Scotland, were banned from it and send to irland because of their alliance with English and because of their too important viking culture reminiscence
Omg finally someone talking about Chinese armor and weapons!!!!! The monk is probably based on Sengchou who was famous for his use of the tin staff (most likely a wax wood bow affixed with tin on either end) it would also explain the costume (in some regards anyway) as the monks only started wearing the one sleeved tunic to honor Dazu Huike who chopped his arm off to show his sincerity to bodhidharma (he came a tad later). and ts fine he's not wearing the orange (saffron) clothing. Normally orange is for fully ordained monks or used when cultivating Dao. Generally when practicing Shaolin kung fu or other labour orientated tasks the monks would wear normal grey/brown attire, its only deemed acceptable now to do performances in the orange or yellow clothing as its considered to be promoting Shaolin. Not sure about the vambraces? doesn't seem too likely though, as they normally bind their forearms or train with iron rings. I mean maybe? when a government enlisted their help they'd usually be armored by the general and attire of the period? Shaolin history is really cool, and because they were monks and could not afford large armories they would often "condition" (or thicken) their bones / skin via many different techniques. All traveling monks were required to know how to use the staff as you could incapacitate hostile threats (animals, humans, ect) without killing them.
He's using a Bo staff I own and use one and I can already tell that the shaolin will be the hybrid because the Bo staff can trip strike with any part but generally has 2 grips to provide extra precision in combat as well as balance when using it as leverage for kicks
According to For Honor Chinese web. It is 天地, heaven earth. I have no idea why T_T....It just not feels like a proper fit for other three. Tiandi has more fantasy feeling. It mostly appear in Chinese fantasy novel specially Xianxia(仙侠) genre. Even in xianxia genre, if a man called Tiandi, Jesus he must be the god of universe or at least the god of gods. Imaging a man called The Ragnarok in Viking Faction XD. My personal opinion, according to the general looking(the point he's armor is even better than Jiangjun ). Jinjun(禁军) could be a better name for this class which means The Imperial Guard or The King's Man(this one is trolling lol).
Khaos Yin I agree wholeheartedly. The tiandi name is out of place af! If they really want a fancy name for it, they can name it 錦衣 or something of the likes.
The issue with those possible factions is the technology gap, Mayans and Aztecs were much less developed so they wouldn't fit into the medieval theme of for honor.
Its not the priority, Ubisoft feature wulin to get into chinese massive players. But they may add saracen faction to gain more moslem players. And they need to make jerusalem siege as DLC story.
it would be nice if you could make a video on ancient chinese tactics and formations. in my opinion they seem very elaborate and complex compared to roman formations. but the concepts of discipline, team work, and standards are very similar in both. both nations produced great soldiers/infantry.
A decent strength with a staff makes it a pretty good blunt weapon, that staff has metal ends so I think I could be a fairly good weapon, but I’m not really an expert in the sense of the word.
Nice vid, for honor is my favorite game, im an overall rep 50 and i have a rep 25 Warden, he is my main and i am excited to see him getting a rework... I also really like HEMA, so as I'm playing i tell my friends that the character's movesets make no sense!
I thought it was a really cool idea to add Chinese-based characters; I’m not particularly knowledgeable on the region or era but anyone who’s seen a king fu movie or ten should have seen at least one guy who looks like those characters. Also, random, but your hair reminds me of Joaquin Phoenix’s hair in Gladiator lol
If they ever add more factions I'd love to see: •Persian or Moor inspired faction •Celtic faction •I'd say Greek faction but that might be too similar to the Romans that were disappointingly thrown in with knights. They should have been standalone. And metatron you might be interested in watching a video by the TH-camr Ranton, who spent a lot of time in a shaolin temple and is very knowledgeable in the area. He did an entire video on the new characters and especially the techniques used by the shaolin monk.
Kind of a late comment here. I agree that the "Tian" is possible the character "天(Heaven)", and the "Di" could be "地(Earth, as you mentioned in the video)" or "帝(Emperor)". If it is "天地", the first thing comes to my mind is "天地会(means Society of the Heaven and the Earth)", a secret society established around Qing dynasty that against Qing's rule, and this secret society also related to a martial art school called "Hung Kuen (洪拳, although this school is actually more focus on fist fighting techniques)". And it does kind of fit into the setting of Wulin faction that they escaped from the civil war in homeland, like "天地会“ spread along Chinese migration to Southeast Asia and America, etc. As for "天帝", that probabily referring to the supreme deity (昊天上帝) in Chinese mythology. I would not suprise if they chose this one, because they did a similar thing to Orochi (could be refering to 八岐大蛇 ヤマタノオロチ ?). I saw some comments refering to "天敌"... well, the closest meaning that I can get for this situation is "enemy in nature", this word is originaly used to discribe the predator in a predator-prey relationship. It makes me feel uncomfortable, grammatically, if it was put as a name all by itself. If it turned out to be "天敌", I would not play Ubi's games in their offical Chinese translation ever again.
Nice video mr. Metatron, as always. I have one thing I want to mention, and that is that the camera might be too close up, in my opinion. I preferred the way you have done it in older videos, where the camera is not really close to your face. But anyway, have a good day, and continue making interesting videos :^)
I do hope they take some inspiration from some of the schools from the Age of Wushu/Wu Lin game. Their classes would be a good starting point. I mean if they needed a male locked class you got the Rootless Clan. ( not actually steal from them but you know inspiration lol )
Shaolin attacks; when you hold light attack and you strike and stun, he does this thing when he hold the staff for balance and use quick attack with his legs upon his opponent
Still most love for the knight but I have always enjoyed the Chinese peaceful warrior using a staff, Metatron I would love it if you decided to research staff combat and to hear your thoughts on the subject. On a somewhat related note one of my fave D&D characters is a staff wielding Paladin, who truly focuses on sparing life where ever he can hence a staff as a weapon.
The weapon of Shaolin is called 'gun'棍,which we see as the “the leader of all the weapons”,its one of the ‘’Eighteen Arms of Wushu‘’ 。Its one of the oldest weapon that in the history of the war.It can help to defeat the enemies with out kill them. And its also the most beasic weapon of Shaolin Temple.
The most iconic Chinese armor is not the Qin terra cotta armor, but the tang-song era mountain scale armor or the Míng-guāng armor as they are more often portrayed in Chinese folklore as well as Chinese operas. This is what influenced the Romance of the three kingdoms' anachronistic depiction of characters from the third century wearing armor and using weapons from the 13th century, including the popular depiction of Guan Yu.
Could you do another historical evaluation on the armors Skyrim and Oblivion that you have not previously done? Your historical analysis videos are quite enjoyable.

Degeneracy Slayer Dude ya don't need to have a real army, look at how many BTS fans there are internationally. 😂😂😂🤣🤣
If you're talking about the Joseon dynasty that was strongly influenced by Neo-Confucianism, maybe. But not at all the case for Korean kingdoms that existed before.
Aden YANG
Especially those during the Silla and other kingdoms before the Joseon became their rulers.
It is a pity korean martial arts are really peculiar like the mounted double swordsman
Tianyu Zhu thank you for the information, really appreciate it, as an european i love chinese history and culture :)
Nah man, also my pleasure to share what i know with u
> another reason is killing is a sin in Buddhism, staff is sort of " peaceful weapon
I love how many religions militaries used this excuse.)))
Александр Воробьёв Japanese medieval monks are the most badass, they used gunpowder just fck excuse
Tianyu Zhu well Japanese are very practical people.)
I believe Tiandi's characters could also be written as 天帝, Which means "Heavenly Emperor." Which would also explain why a dragon appears in the Marching Fire Cinematic, since the dragon represents the power of the Heavenly Emperor in Chinese Theology I believe.
Specter Crums 大将军would have been better. I think he is the only one that actually serve the military in chinese factions
Specter Crums that fits with his backstory to of him being a prince before
Time to talk about Chinese armor, weapons and history.
Ryu Fireheart Good idea
Great video. Loved it. Also loved the Chinese intro. I think its great that you did that for you Chinese fans. I always enjoy watching your videos.
I Reckon they should add stuff that makes the characters more realistic should the player want to make their soldier/warrior look that way.
i agree but i think they do a pretty fine job putting some armor that resembles more the real deal and you can put or remove painting in the armor so it can look more authentic.
I wish I could look like a Viking but raider looks like a wannabe Conan the Barbarian.
Yeah, but Warlord looks like a typical Viking
And now to turn this kinda weird...but the female raider tho...I mean she could probably crush a melon between her fucking thighs, and let’s not forget the ironing board that is her stomach area.
In all seriousness though tho, yeah..the raider looks...Mm yeah, and the warlord does look quite realistic, I just wish I could have the Centurion without his mask. Most of the knight characters look decent. Well, most of them..the sneaky agile dude..actually that class can’t change gender can it? Ok then, the sneaky agile woman..all the others though, yeah they look good. (On about the knight peoples here)
Connor Quarmby the funny bit is the characters and NPC look a lot better in the cut scenes. lol
I've been waiting for this. Thank you!!
I swear Metatron has the most epic and awe-inspiring outro of any TH-camr.
Geezus Christ you Mandrin good mate!
You and Jon Cena really surprised me- I really didn't expected it, but once I got it and saw your skills its pure serendipity man :D
TianDi should be just 天地, which is used pretty much widely across many places to express broadness. You could literally think that means "everything" or "from heaven to earth."
If you go into classical literature, the famous 《千字文》 (Thousand Character Classic) around 500 A.D. starts with ”天地玄黄宇宙洪荒” to express the vastness of the nature and universe.
Huangwei Xie should he be named Shi Wei?
Not in the case of single man/class. 天地 makes no sense here. 天帝 makes sense.
better with 无常lol
If it is 天帝 it would make more sense to name the Guanyu looking character that
关羽 is always the great warrior, and he is general, the general character fits him perfectly.

This could bring about a Mongolian warrior so I'm good
strike leader waraki i wish they could as Mongolian i realy want a Mongolian Chracter in a game.
Or a Hun
If knights have romans, the wu-lin could have mongolians
While I love the idea of a Mongolian warrior, it most likely won’t work due to their fighting style revolving 95% around using bows on horseback, two things that can’t be used in non feat situations sadly. Don’t let this comment stop you from brain storming new ideas for the game tho!
@@kenwaycrusader7411 or they could add Mongolian wresling style tho many mongolian warriors used that to execute their enemies
Now this actually existed you might be interested in this article greatmingmilitary.blogspot.com/2017/03/special-unit-of-ming-dynasty-jian-ye.html?m=1
Thanks for the info and the link Kevin. This would explain the lack of historical information available.
@Kevin Gonzalez
Wait a minute, the Lin Kuei thing isn't invented by Mortal Kombat?
Thanks, didn't know that. It makes sense, getting very interesting.
In tradition Chinese martial arts the weapons are Dao (single edge sword), Jian (double edge sword), Gun (staff), and Qiang (spear).
Northstar uuuuh yes have you seen his emotes?
Here’s a new subscriber. Great video!
Is there any chance that you will re-do your top for honor heroes list by including the Wulin?
He should save that for when Wulin has 6 heroes like the other factions, providing they will get 6 heroes that is
While I'd like to see that too, I don't see any of them dethroning the Lawbringer which is kind of dissapointing.
Please keep working on Historical Chinese related content. They're one the more underrated sides of history in my opinion. Keep it up man!
News flash: Ancient Chinese warriors are awesome! No need to be disappointed.
I mean not that any of the other characters are historical but the Chinese characters are clearly based on fantasy heroes.
As a Chinese Filipino , 您的汉语非常好!Even with a few mispronunciations here and there it was great!
I don't mind Persian Immortals for an add-on warrior.
The Mongols historically fought everyone in the game except the Vikings.
+Samuraiedge2 Swedish Vikings called the Rus settled & founded Russia & Ukraine & the Mongols did hit the area, so they did have contact
Abbiamo decisamente bisogno di più video su For Honor. La valutazione di tutti i personaggi è ancora il mio video preferito del canale.
Wow this is pretty cool, you speak facts and actual historical things, me likey
戰國春秋
Like I said, not a "new" faction, more like mercenary faction warriors like previous seasonal warriors (gladiator, highlander, etc).
@Croz Raven
That's the dilemma - they totally deserve a full faction, but do not have enough variation in weaponry/associated warrior culture to make one, and lumping them together with existing factions will feel extra-awkward, even moreso than Romans/Highlander.
not unlimited possibilities cus they have limited money
Hey ! I'd really like you talking about ancient chinese weapons and armor ! Keep up the good work !
Dumb Walrus The Zulu did use axes, however they don't really look at all similar to a traditional axe
Oh man I forgot about Carthage. I don't know much about their weapons and gear other than elephants. I think an elephant rider would be a little op.
Egypt and Carthage are more related to near easterners than to Africa.
a country from central Africa would be the real representative of Africa instead of Egypt or Carthage.
Tiandi => 田地 => Rice paddy
I'm joking, of course. To be honest, even as a native Mandarin-speaker, I'm not sure myself (then again, I don't look into Chinese history or Chinese folklore/literature).

also, 武林 wulin means fields of martial arts or all warriors of martial arts in Chinese.
Anyone else think it would be cool if they added onto the story of the game with the new faction involved?
It makes no sense basically
Avalanche
In game story could make it that since there was war, the Chinese allied with Korea to boost their ranks.
Knights beat all.

我觉得肥肠好 is a valid opinion haha. Jokes aside, Metatron speaks really good Chinese. It's just a difficult language.

Andrea Gullo yeah I agree with you, although maybe a black powder specialist Korean warrior could work for the Chinese
The GhostHero, nope, Korea and China have never been the best of friends, if at all, not gonna happen.
梅塔特隆!It sounds really badass!
Oh my god, I threw that into Google Translate and it detected it as Japanese instead of Chinese and gave me "Temple of the plum tower!"
The plum tower part does make sense in Chinese as well lol
I was so happy to see the metatron speak on my favorite video game. Favorite TH-cam and favorite game. Yes please 😁😁😁😁😁
You have ears!?
I'd be super excited for you too make videos about For honor and In particular the Chinese
they will rework all charactersbackstories sooooo SAMURAI METAL ARMOR PLS
steven buitenkamp nah that my Boys Knights
wat.... samurai did have metal armor so im asking for metal armor for samurai in for honor
They did have metal armor but not as good quality as the europeans did, in fact it might have been inferior to european metal, but that is debatable since they didn't historically fight each other since the japanese were very isolated.
yes but i want it ingame, i dont need stat changes just astethic cuz wooden armor looks so dumb especially kensei's wooden bowl of a do
Since this game takes place in a world where the Knights and samurai live on the same continent and therefore same resources, the Samurai and knight need to have equal quality of armor unless one fraction has mire control of resources but the other fractions can melt down the armor and weapons of defeated warriors.
Roman and knight are from the same exact contry
Damn your chinese is pretty incredible..
Thank you!
Metatron Im a european who lived in Shanghai for 7 years. Most foreigners dont come close to your level.
As a mandarin speaker, you sir sure is good for foreigner :)
There’s always next time
He's using a Bo staff I own and use one and I can already tell that the shaolin will be the hybrid because the Bo staff can trip strike with any part but generally has 2 grips to provide extra precision in combat as well as balance when using it as leverage for kicks
The Ragnarok lol, now you got my imagination rolling. XD
For Honor is your favourite Game? That takes dedication brother, good on ya' for stickin' with it after all the crap about it almost never working
They should add an Egyptian faction
I WANT SPARTAAA.
Seriously though, you have no idea how much I want to use a Leonidas shouting "THIS IS SPARTA" in ancient Greek all over the map.
From what they've shown us these new characters have vastly more variation in armor choices as you level/gear up.
i was hoping for an African or Mayan/Atzec like Faction :(
Only if I can choose white africans then :P
Daniel Bifröst lol that's kinda racist but cool
Yeah well since there are black vikings and stuff I want white africans :P
The issue with those possible factions is the technology gap, Mayans and Aztecs were much less developed so they wouldn't fit into the medieval theme of for honor.
Shit, the Knights are already 500 years more advanced than the vikings, no reason not to throw in a tribal faction.
Am installing For Honor now & hope i see you in game some day ^^ !
i would have loved to see arabs or an arabian faction ! instead of China
Rasmus They could add that later. I want it so knights can go DEUS VULT on them.
Its not the priority, Ubisoft feature wulin to get into chinese massive players. But they may add saracen faction to gain more moslem players. And they need to make jerusalem siege as DLC story.
You mean knights getting Saladined? XD jk
Ruoxi Xie you know in history it goes both ways, siege and under siege, so the potential for story is very vast.
Literally cannot even
Clash of religions intensifies.
Great video, man,
it would be nice if you could make a video on ancient chinese tactics and formations. in my opinion they seem very elaborate and complex compared to roman formations. but the concepts of discipline, team work, and standards are very similar in both. both nations produced great soldiers/infantry.
If they ever add more factions I'd love to see:
•Persian or Moor inspired faction
•Celtic faction
•I'd say Greek faction but that might be too similar to the Romans that were disappointingly thrown in with knights.
About time! Also, Korean? I never seen anyone say that before. Usually, it's Mongolian or Saracens.
I think you showing some game content would be great. I would love to see it.
Ever since I played Dynasty Warriors as a kid I always really liked stylized ancient chinese warrior aesthetic
>when your favorite historical youtuber's favorite game is also your favorite game
:')
It’s so weird seeing someone who’s not Chinese not completely butcher the language. Thumbs up to you dude
I might be wrong but from what I could tell the Tiandi was wearing mountain pattern armor as well, which was first made during the Tang Dynasty
Could you do another historical evaluation on the armors Skyrim and Oblivion that you have not previously done? Your historical analysis videos are quite enjoyable.
great video, please consider doing more on Chinese history / culture :D
