I had to laugh a little. I started watching a lot of minimalist and capsule wardrobe channels/videos a couple years back with the intention of owning less stuff and a lot less clothes. A few of the creators where sewing and knitting their capsule wardrobe pieces. That made me rediscover knitting. I needed the perfect brown hat for my future capsule wardrobe so I knit it. 18 month later I am OBSESSED with knitting and I am drowning in gorgeous yarn and beautiful hand knit pieces...🤣 I mostly knit classic, timeless garments that would fit wonderful in many capsule wardrobes. I just have a few too many 😁

This is how i choose my projects. I realistically cannot knit, crochet or sew all the pieces i want..
I choose pieces that can be dressed up for my corporate job and dressed down for weekend wear. My favourite capsule top for this transition is my Tonight top

For me clothing is all about the making process. I love the idea of having some long lasting basics but... I don't love to make basics. For me a capsule wardrobe would be more like creating pieces that go really well together in different combinations. But I think the idea is that a capsule wardrobe consists of only a very limited amount of items, so that wouldn't be a match with the vast amount of knitting and sewing I do. I just LOVE to make garments and there's nothing minimalistic about that, hehe. Anyway... your suggestions are still great patterns, thanks for sharing!

I think the concept of a capsule wardrobe is unique to the individual. There are so many considerations. Are you working in a job that requires"professional" attire, do you have young children, are you an outdoor active person. Being retired with good sized property with flower and veg gardens, as well as 2 great-nephews who love to come have adventurers with me, my knit wardrobe needs are much different than when I worked in an office. Thankfully I know which styles suit me and make me comfortable. I admire a lot of the beautiful patterns out there but have learned to only knit the things that suit my life and that I will wear.

You might like the Weekday Tee by Aimee Sher Makes that she just released. It has a vneck and just a little lace detail along the raglan seam. It is definitely one of those items I'd like in a few colors. Thanks for pulling all of these designs together. It's always so fun to see what people think of as timeless knit pieces. I also have the DRK everyday sweater on my to knit list. I knit a Ginny cardigan a few years back and I wear it every week. It is one of those items I live in during the winter months.

I love everything about this episode. Making something beautiful, custom, functional and timeless, while being conscious of the impact fashion has had on the world... It's part of what drives me personally to have a small business (one day) somewhere in the overlap of the wool industry and slow fashion! 😍

Thank you for all of these suggrstions Kaci! Reminds me of my mother's words of wisdom when I was a teenager and wanting to buy new and cheap clothes- It's better to only have a few things that are high quality and classic, than a lot of cheaply made current style clothes.

Thanks for a great addition to your episodes, Kaci! I appreciate the work that went in to finding these patterns. While you were talking I also started thinking about color choices. Staples tend to be in basic colors but can be really fun if you are consistent with a color pop in your wardrobe.

Making the cumulus blouse in a cotton/alpaca/merino fingering base in this marled navy blue colour, and I cannot wait to finish it. I plan on sewing up a Hinterland dress in a white linen to wear with my new blouse. My store bought items are slowly being swapped for my me-mades and i'm thrilled ❤ Thanks for this great video!

This episode is just so timely for me. I've been using the Stylebook app to organize my wardrobe in a capsule-y way, and recently I started a separate section of the "closet" in that app for knitting plans so I can try out pieces I want to knit with all of my other clothes before committing to knitting them. It lets me try out ideas collage-style to make sure the piece is actually going to be functional with my existing clothes.

I loved your video and the idea of a capsule wardrobe! My tiny little comment would be only this: a person who sews is called a seamstress or seamster. Hope you don’t mind, and keep up the good work!

I just checked and most of the knits you listed are in my favourites, except for the cardigans. And I also have the sewing patterns you listed, except the Bob pants. I decided I liked the Barry pants slightly better, so I had that one instead. We must have very similar tastes in clothing. I guess I should get started on my capsule wardrobe.

Those are some really nice capsule wardrobe choices. For me, capsule wardrobe pieces are timeless pieces that can be in style during different decades and some of your pieces definitely fit into my definition. One of my ultimate favorite pieces are the Porter Cardigan designed by Beatrice Perron Dahlen and the Gentle Morning cardigan designed by Trin-Annelie (both of which I still need to knit).

Another helpful episode, thank you! Having used the KFO Pure Silk for a Bolan Tee, see Ravelry, I found it to be quite different than the usual slinky silk. The silkworm is actually allowed to chew it’s way out of the cocoon, resulting in some long fibres and some very short ones…a much toothier yarn compared to that glossy, smooth version were the wee worm meets its doom. My tee is the same size now as when I first blocked it. And three cheers for Silkworm Survival!

Loved the episode. I literally just finished my Spacetime sweater this week and have already worn it a couple of times. I can also highly recommend Heidi’s Perseids cardigan as a wardrobe classic. I made the longer version, but am going to make a short one too. Jen Parroccini also has some classics with lots of instructions for customizing your fit. The one I’ll list specifically here is the LBD Tee. It has both a V and crew neck option, and is perfect for those of us who need things we can wear in warmer weather. Keep those recommendations coming. 😊

I can’t agree with you about having one really nice say sweater. I would prefer a couple in different patterns and cheaper (nice) yarn. I personally can’t spend $100+ for one sweater. That is just me. I prefer choices to wearing the same sweater multiple times a week like I hear some knitters say. Glad we are all different.

The most sustainable wardrobe is the wardrobe you already own! ❤ Lovely suggestions, but so many neutrals… I need a little more color and pizzaz to keep me motivated while knitting. Things like the Tallvinen or the Sheep Camp sweater get me more excited. The Petite Knit vibe that’s so popular now reminds me of Eileen Fisher. Classy, neutral, classic… but not my vibe.

    • @lizholzer4930
      @lizholzer4930 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

I don’t go for neutrals in my own wardrobe, but as a person who watches a lot of knitting on TH-cam, I’ve come to appreciate makers who stick to colors that allow us to see construction details. I hate watching videos where the maker talks about the fabulous details of a navy blue cardigan, for example, as it’s 100% sure that I’ll never be able to see a thing.

Thanks for a great episode, Kaci! I always love your content. I really like the idea of a handmade capsule wardrobe and focusing on long-lasting basics.
My question is: how do you balance a consciousness around consumption and a well-curated wardrobe with the love of the process of making? Eventually that capsule is filled out, and then what? I only have so many knit-worthy friends.

It would be helpful if you could also say how these pieces are knitted. I have bought some recommended patterns only to find they are knitted top down in one piece and no one I could ask at our local yarn stores had any idea how to follow the instructions, so I ended up throwing them away. I'm very wary about buying patterns online now for that reason.
