RV WATER DAMAGE REMOVAL and NEW WALLS: PART 1 | RV RENO

  • When you buy an older RV, there's a solid chance you'll find some water damage when you start your renovations. Big Betty had these blemishes due to an old shower leak and worn out window caulking. So we ripped out the rotten and in some places moldy paneling from our back bedroom wall. Then put in new paneling. But simply replacing the paneling wouldn't have fixed the issue! So we removed the window, applied new butyl tape to the frame, put the window back into the RV, and sealed the outside with some caulking. This is just part 1 of our water damage areas unfortunately. Part 2 will be coming out soon on our repairs under our two big windows in the living room and dinette areas!

    Okay. You have inspired us. Our fall project is to repair the front wall in our 2009 trailer and do some redecorating to get our little home ready for the spring and summer of2023. Thank you for the tutorial. As retired health care providers, we hope your traveling PT was or is (which ever the case) rewarding and successful!

      Hello! We used a generic paneling we got at home depot. I can't remember the exact name, but it was about 3-4 mm thick. We also used some underlayment board to replace the paneling. The underlayment board is 5mm thick which was a bit thicker than we needed in some areas but stronger. Hope this helps!

    Hi, great job and video. Just a little critique... I wish you explained everything you were doing more. As someone who needs to repair my walls and window leaks it would have been helpful to know exactly what you where doing each step. i.e when you took the window out you were doing something to the hole in the trailer, wish I knew what that was... Informative video tho! Thanks

    • @metal422life
      @metal422life ปีที่แล้ว +3

      He popped the window out then cleaned all the caulking off. You want your new seal to be clean of any and all debris. I would recommend not using clear silicone caulking or any silicon. Use something like weathermax all weather caulking. Use gloves and before you rub the bead see what the clean up chemical is and dip your finger in that before rubbing the bead. If your finger gets some sticky on it clean it off and keep dipping your finger to keep it from sticking to u.

      It took us about 1 month to replace the old rotten and moldy walls , but we were also finishing graduate school. So we worked mostly on the weekends and not every weekend. Overall, our full RV reno took about 4-6 months. Totally can be completed sooner than the time we took!

      It's hard to perform a Reno without tools. We used Ryobi battery operated tool during the Reno because we didn't always have electricity. Link to our tools is in the video description! If you can't get tool then look to borrow or rent tools from the local hardware store! Good luck!

    So did you get all the old paneling entirely off? I’m in the middle of this on mine and the part where the paneling and the styrofoam meet doesn’t seem to want to come off the styrofoam. Or did you just get as much off and spray the mold killer on it and put new paneling?

      We tried to get off as much of the paneling as we could. Did not get it all. Then paneled over it after killing the mold. Hope that helps! And good luck! Tearing down the old panel is not a fun process!

    I am getting ready to do what you did for your MH. Ours is a 04 Fleetwood Bounder. The seller told me that they repaired the 4 years ago, now leak. I think we are going to do the same window & wall that you did. Anyway, do you have a list of what you used for your project. I see you used a panel. Did you consider plane laun? Was it the thickness to match the original thickness? I appreciate any information you can give me.

    • @my74vette
      @my74vette 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn't see your part 2. Hoping to see what your completed repair. Thanks Bob V

    • @my74vette
      @my74vette 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Can you tell me about the panel that you used? How thick was the panel? Was it very close to the thickness of the original panel? We are replacing about half of the wall. So, I am concerned that the replaced panel will not match. Is your panel wood or hardboard?

    • @RyanMegan
      @RyanMegan  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      We used paneling from home depot that was thinner than typical 5mm layment board for the back bedroom. This matched up pretty well! Now we used 5mm underlayment board in the livingroom and that didn't quite match perfectly. It was too thick. But it all depends on how well you can get the old paneling removed from your RV walls. Hope that helps!

    • @my74vette
      @my74vette 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks.... I am going out there... I am going to use the 5MM. In removing the wall, I took off a little of the insulation. I am going to sand the insulation using 40 grit sandpaper, just enough to fit the 5MM luan to the existing wall. One more question. How happy are you of the spray glue?

    • @RyanMegan
      @RyanMegan  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds like a solid plan! The spray glue was okay, but I used liquid nail in the living room and have been much happier with that.
