Just a few words of advice:
-Don't watch the music videos for first time reactions, they can be very distracting from the music. The videos have their place, but the music should take precedence.
-Most tool fans would say that lyrics are a must. I don't know what your preference is regarding lyrics, as they can also be distracting from the music, but Maynard James Keenan is a masterful lyricist. Knowing the message behind the song adds another layer of depth to the music
-The tool army is large and always happy to see someone discover tool for the first time. If you do more of these videos, we will come back for more. But, as i think you already said, we can be kinda pretentious about them. It's only because we're already balls deep into the rabbit hole, and want more company. We mean good.
-the tool rabbit hole can become a black hole if you're not cautious. It will suck you in and never let you leave. They really are that good of a band. You'll quickly find out that after listening to The Pot 5 more times, you'll like it even more than you already do. That doesn't change, no matter how many times you listen to the song.

"Why aren't more bass players like this?"
You mean bassists with great tone who write interesting bass lines that totally fit the music without being unnecessarily busy just for complexities' sake?
    Damn good question.

If a journey is what you are looking for... start from the beginning. If you want to get the feel for their sound go with the the most popular songs: 46&2, Schism, Aenema, Lateralus. Do stick to studio audio tracks (no videos), there are some songs that go in pairs or groups of 3s. The Tool army gets cranky when those are not done together. Nice reaction

No disrespect to Nightwish (I don't like it, but then again we all have different tastes and it's all good), but Tool is another type of beast. Tool has arguably the best rock/metal drummer alive and one of the all time bests, plus two other top elite musicians. And then it has Maynard on the vocals, who's hands down one of the best lyricists the world has ever know, plus someone with a great vocal range. Tool is unique, you'll never find anyone that sounds like them, because it's simply not possible. Welcome to the rabbit hole! As for your next reaction I honestly think you should go back and start with their earlier stuff so you can understand how the band evolved over time. I would start with "Hush" from Opiate, their first EP out in 1992 and from there on work your way up. "Sober" from Undertow, their first album released in 1993 is also a great choice, although for that one I would go with the live version.

One of the greatest bands to ever walk the earth. Period. If you find this complex, do "The Grudge" next and your mind will be blown away. Drumwise this is a monster. I'm a drummer myself and it took me 6 month to learn this shit and I still make mistakes when I'm not in the right mood for it. By the way, stay with audio only, best way to do it. Maybe pull up some lyrics next time, deep shit.

    • @John-vm2sq
      @John-vm2sq 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Yeah. My opinion is to start with the "mainstream" hits first. The Pot is a good start with minimal polyrhythm and a pretty straightforward hook/beat.
Imo, the journey is complete and your ears have evolved enough when something like "Lost Keys/Rosetta Stoned" becomes your favorite. Like so so so much chaos but the 8 minute build up to, "overwhelmed as one would be, placed in my position, such a heavy burden now to be the one ..."
To me, that was when I realized Tool was the greatest band ever. If I played Rosetta Stoned early in my Tool listening sessions, I would've been turned off immediately.
Sorta similar to SOAD too. Start with simple, almost "radio-made" songs (Toxicity, Aerials, etc) and you slowly begin to appreciate the less popular, but infinitely better songs like "Radio/Video" where the band is put on full display.
That's Rosetta Stoned for me. Beautiful chaos that will leave you in tears and chills be the end.

I love to see someone discover Tool for the first time. Just an early heads up, many of their songs should be listened to together because they transition into one another. You don't necessarily have to do this (many of us were introduced to these songs without knowing about any of the transitions), but it will definitely enhance your experience so I'm listing them below.
    On their Aenima album:
Intermission and Jimmy (less important, but Intermission is an interesting intro to Jimmy)
    On their Lateralus album:
Eon Blue Apocalypse and The Patient (not necessary)
Parabol and Parabola (this is a must since it's basically one song broken into two parts)
Disposition, Reflection, and Triad (three songs makes it a little long, but it's a definite must; this is known as the Holy Trinity or Holy Triad)
    On their 10,000 Days album:
Wings for Marie and 10,000 Days (again, one song in two parts)
Lost Keys and Rosetta Stoned (Rosetta Stoned is a story and the set up for it is in Lost Keys)
Intension and Right in Two (not necessary, but Intension is a great intro to Right in Two)
If you do listen to the songs together, try not to stop between the transitions or you might lose the full effect. But, most importantly, enjoy the journey. Tool usually takes multiple listens anyway to fully appreciate.
Great reaction though. It looks like you'll have fun exploring the rest of their catalogue.

Sober, Aenema, Lateralus gives a great progression through their styles. Other big songs were stinkfist, schism, prizon sex and jambi.
I really think tool songs benefit from being listened to in the context of the album, particularly AEnima, Lateralus and 10,000 Days.

Opiate and Undertow are more agro young man music - which I love. From Aenema onward they mostly just get more creative, expansive, psychedelic, spacious, sprawling, transcendent, cinematic, tribal, etc. They are masters of their instruments, but what makes it so amazing is their ability to compose such masterpieces. IMO the best music, hands down.

This is probably around midway on the complexity scale for Tool. Generally they've become more complex with time, although on Lateralus they use some very bold ideas like incorporating the Fibonacci sequence and playing around with time signatures a lot. I'd go to 46 & 2 next, then maybe dip your toes into Schism, Vicarious or Culling Voices. Eventually you'll get to Rosetta Stoned, Third Eye and 7empest.

sober or stink fist is my first suggestions to check out. the official music videos are great to go along with the song to show you what the song wants you to feel like.

Welcome to the Labyrinth that is Tool. You're pretty new to doing this so a little constructive criticism: I appreciated that you didn't stop the music every time you made a comment (others who do that makes it quite annoying,) but it was nearly impossible to hear what you were saying while the song was playing. I'm not sure if you can adjust your sound levels during editing, or use a different mic, or lower the mix between the music and your voice...but something could be done to fix that. Regardless, otherwise it was good and again, welcome to Tool. ~Be Blessed

Listen to the Lateralus album as a complete thing. I love the way Tool can be so detailed and complicated yet listening to it just makes sense in such a simple way.

Tool is an acquired taste. When Fear Inoculum came out I listened every day for 2 years. I would have told you Invincible was their best but this year I have returned to Reflection. It's not going to blow you away. It's just a beautiful song, deep and humble. It must be circulated through my system every night with my moon overhead...

It’s funny that you can bang your head to this one because there’s really only like one or two tool songs that you can bob your head to in the rhythm I’m glad you got to enjoy it though

This will require that you have a smoke ( even if you dont smoke), take a stroll , take a nap. And then you're gonna go ahead and listen to It again. It's a doom loop That is so good that you just can't stop yourself! Enjoy!!

The world of prog metal is vast, tool is their own flavor of prog. A newer progressive death metal band worth checking out is 'Rivers of Nihil' start with 'Where owls know my name'.
