My very first bike at age 12 was this exact Carlton Continental 5 speed. Same colour and decals except mine was a 19.5 inch frame. I remember my mum taking me to the top floor of the Nottingham city centre Co op department store just before Christmas 1976 and asking me to choose a bike I liked. Fell in love with that metallic colour scheme. Rode that bike "up hill and down dale" on road, tracks, tow paths and everything in between as you did as a kid in those days. Only thing that let it down in my eyes back then was the lack of a front mech to make it 10 speed. Happy memories. Thank you for taking me back down memory lane with this video!

Forgot to add that every component on your bike appears to match exactly the standard set up that came with mine. Looks like the original build as came from the factory 👍

Love that bike. I had one of those second hand in the 70s and loved it. I think that is a Carlton Continental and I always loved that colour. You did a great job of fixing it.
Best things about bikes like this are how reliable they are & how easy maintenance is once you get them sorted. With modern puncture resistant tyres they're unbeatable runabouts.

I love the way the classic chrome finish components clean up. If Shimano did chrome finish Di2 I’d be first in the queue. These classic bikes shine like no other.

i got a Carlton Corsa for xmas 73 or 74 i think it was, and my friend got one a few months later, his had the new quick release wheel skewers and short chrome mud guards and i remember the odometer fitted on the front forks that had a star wheel that was struck by a pin on the spokes to log revolutions.
you had to stare hard to see the counter and the bike was bloody heavy and with few gears but they were beautiful bikes, our pride and joy as 12 year olds
We love this era ourselves, for the same reason of having so many memories of being kids ⚙️

Good job, it required a lots of work and time. Usually I use steel wool to clean the spokes which are often not stainless steel.

When I was fifteen I bought, on finance, a Carlton Corsa Strada, which I paid for weekly out of my wages as a trainee gardener. One evening when I went to fetch my bike from the shed to ride home it was gone! Some low-life had stolen it. I never saw it again, and to rub salt into the would, had to carry on paying for it. I still remember the frame number 121369..............
What a shame, time to buy one and restore it back to your original spec🧡🚲
These steel bikes always look amazing after you've done your magic.

Great video and job on this old bike. I love the resin polish idea for the scratched and rusty frame, I'm dealing with a few bikes that this will be a great help. I always have issues with the gears shifting as well after disassembly/reassembly but will keep cracking on to get it right. Thanks for the inspiration.

1:38 I used a ball joint separator press and a little bit of penetrating oil to get mine out.
My first road bike (racer) was almost identical to that. It was a Carlton Continental. It was £72 and I paid my Dad a pound a week from my £2 Saturday job. That would be the late 70’s.
We’ve all got our bike stories like that, these 70’s, 80’s bikes are our favourite for that reason!
Great work on these - both bike work and videos. I think I've watched them all now! I don't know if any cycle shops in the North East do as thorough work as you guys. If I'm ever passing I'll get my trusty Whistle Miwok 1380d in for a once-over!

Not sure how you wash so many bikes. My hands get so dried out out even though I use lotion. As always, brilliant job. I think I would have ran away from this one but I guess I am spoiled.
I have to say that’s never been an issue for us, degreaser can be pretty rough on your hands you just have to make sure to wash it straight off, thanks for watching!🧡
@@Bikespeeds I use a lot of Dawn dish detergent so maybe that is it. Also it seems to be worse for me during the winter months.

I have one of these but need some wheels for it (dont have the old to measure up). Do you know what type/size of wheel would fit this bike?
I don't like having grease in the freewheel. It adds substantial drag and makes it so you can barely hear the pawls clicking while coasting or pedaling backwards. I bought a new Shimano SF-MX30 freewheel recently and it had a lot of drag and you could barely hear the pawls clicking; I assumed they must have packed it with grease. I removed the cone to have a look and sure enough, it was packed with green grease. I don't know when they started doing that. I have another SF-MX30 that I bought new in 1997 and it was never packed with grease. I also bought a Shimano freewheel when I was a kid in 1987 and it wasn't packed with grease either.
I removed the grease by submerging the whole freewheel in gasoline for a couple of hours and then lubricated it with Break-Free CLP, which is an oil rather than a grease, and that made it spin as freely and sound the same as the ones I bought in 1987 and 1997.
I know that it's pretty much impossible to assemble a freewheel without using grease to hold the bearings in place, but it's easy to remove the grease and lubricate it with something else after assembly. It doesn't need grease for lubrication purposes because a freewheel has no moving parts when under load. The only time parts are moving in it is when there's no load aside from the trivial weight of a small portion of the chain resting on it.

A 3L ultrasonic cleaner would be enough for home mechanics though we use a 6L in shop
And no we do no paint work in the shop, we send it off as the space required for painting is massive,

Great I've found this channel. I like this style. I once heard that these old pre hyperglide blocks shift better with the type of chain with pins protruding slightly more like the original chain. Any thoughts?

The cost varies so much from job to job, you’re plucking prices out the air without seeing the individual bike. So we tend not to answer these questions so we don’t give a false impression to anyone locally considering it, I hope you understand 🧡👍🏻🚲

Anything is better than nothing, in this video we used saphir leather dye but honestly whatever you have will make the world of difference even if it’s just shoe polish

When we film a bike for TH-cam it always takes twice as long as it should!! But typically anywhere between 6-10 hours
