2001 Lemond 853 frame, I upgraded everything, carbon crankset, carbon seat post, carbon handlebar/stem, new 11 speed 105 shifting and a new saddle. After that a set of Campy Zonda wheels. She weighs in just over 19 lbs and rides like a dream. The 56cm frame fits me like a glove. Needless to say she is my lifetime bike!

@@TheSpiritOfTheWest , I have not had any issues setting a 130mm axle into a 125mm spacing that was the old standard on a steel bike frame. Steel is more forgiving than aluminum and aluminum may not be able to handle this. Luckily for most aluminum frame bikes are built to the new standard, so upgrading is easy. One just has to lose the spacer that may come on an older freehub.

Well , I 'm 67 now gave up the mountain bike and bought exactly this bike . Well i could not be happier , it rides so smooth . I did buy a riser quill stem , and a easier to peddle rear gears. because the old owner was much stonger then me he had a close ratio race gear cassette . I have owned so many bikes old and new .Silky smooth and the ultega shifters still work wonders . but this is a dream ride .After just a fw mods for my comfort , I can't wait to ride it again and again .

I enjoy these restorations but I get triggered whenever he reaches for the sandpaper and removes paint on the frame or erases the branding from the crank.
That said repainting everything might be better for a commuter bike or one that gets left "locked" at school

I too repair bikes and sell them. There is something really special about a steel road bike. I have restored steel and carbon before and while the carbon was definitely lighter, a really nice steel road bike is great at absorbing bumps and looks really really good.

Amazing bike. I still ride a Reynolds 853 here in the UK. They're very common. Reynolds tubes were produced for the framework for the Spitfire fighter plane during WW2. Gregg Lemond was a very decent rider. Went on to build some great bikes. I love this bike.

I love this. I have a '99 Zurich myself. Really is a beautiful bike and so compliant on the road. The Rolf wheels are a beast. Barely enough room for some 28mm tires but got them on there and this thing is built for all day riding. This is also the one I've cut my teeth on developing my meager mechanical skills. I'll never get rid of it.

I own a leMond Tourmalet from 2004 (the same year my daughter was born) with a brushed aluminium finish and green decals. Apart from the fact it looks beautiful it really does inspire confident riding. Highly underrated in terms of feel and the finish on the welding is the best I have ever seen on a bicycle. Mine will stay with me and hopefully, one day, my daughter will appreciate it too.

Rode and raced a Zurich for a couple of years. Greg knew what he was doing in terms of frame design. I've never ridden anything so comfortable for hours in the saddle. Not a "quick" bike, certainly not first choice for criteriums, but for a long road race, very tough to beat! And Rolfs are great wheels! Bike wound up looking just great! Loved the video!

Nice to stumble upon this. I had the exact same bike - 1999 Lemond Zurich with Ultegra in white - and loved it (also replaced the saddle and added Cinelli Spinaci bars for additional hand positions). I really liked the geometry as well as the classic good looks. Kept it for 10 years, until I went carbon with a Specialized Roubaix, and recently a Specialized Creo. Wish that I’d held onto the Lemond, though, especially after seeing your beautiful restoration. Hope your brother really enjoys it.

I just ran into your site today and made a comment on your red GT on how to bring back the original shine on paint using Maguier's Ultimate Compound, which you should do from now on after you clean the frame & fork. Oh yes, I love your videos. Anyways, I'm a mechanic and own my private pro bike shop on Mercer Island 5 min from downtown Seattle. When the pandemic started early last year, my shop was flooded with incredible, perfectly brand new vintage bikes that had maybe 5 or 10 miles of use. One of them was a LeMond Zurich exactly like yours complete with the original tires that still had that fuzz line down the middle. Most came from couples when they were dating in the 80s and bought expensive bikes to impress each other, and after they got married simply hung them up and never used them again. So when the pandemic hit, they thought about riding their bikes again and bought them to me for a tune-up. So for a few months, my place was like a museum, and vintage nuts would come every day to see what was new. Ahhh I love bikes.

I have a '96 LeMond Tourmalet and it's in absolutely superb shape. Still, I'd love to have a craftsman as ultra-Zen-competent as you take it completely apart and put it back together down the line. Maybe I'll do it myself and use your video as a guide! Well done! Thank you!

This was a bike I was considering in the late 90s... I bought a Bianchi Veloce instead.... the Bianchi was a 9s speed originally, then a 10 speed (two 10 speed builds) and now an 11 speed Campy Potenza in 2018. It has just shy of 70,000 miles. Looks pretty decent for that mileage. The 853 is a very nice frameset. I want too many bikes.

My primary road bike is a modern carbon affair with Di2, internal cabling, a wedge-affixed seatpost, carbon tubeless wheels and an integrated front end. I love my bike but I look at this bike and I feel we're missing something these days. Here you have a 21 year old bike that's had minimal maintenance and all it took was a couple hours with some WD40, sandpaper, polishing compound and less than $100 in parts to get it ready for another 21 years. 853 frame. Round seatpost with a regular clamp. Cup and cone threaded headset and a quill stem. Threaded BB. 9 speed with a robust chain and cassette. Everything simple, minimal specialized tools required to service, no torque wrenches involved, standardized and readily available everything. I'll even bet the bike rides really well. It definitely will be reliable day in day out. Let's see where my bike (which cost a lot of money) is in 21 years... I'll bet the landfill.

I am always alert of new videos. I hope you restore a foldable bike in the future. I am sure it will be a small challenge for you.
And a great class for all of us.

    Great video.
I still have my '99 Zurich. I bought it frame/fork only and costume built the rest: Campy Daytona group set, Mavic Open rims, Look pedals.

I just bought the exact same year and color a couple of days ago. Just needed some minor clean-up. Also have a 2001 Zurich and 1998 Tourmalet. All great bikes!

that gun metal stem is really cool. the only thing I'd do differently is opt for white cable housings and polish the rest of the components - the derraileurs, brakes and cable stops. sure, you'd sand off the ultegra printing but if really needed you could replace it with simple decals from your cricut. great work, finally a road bike on your channel :)

Great refresh! I bet this bike is very comfortable. LeMond's geometry theory was a long wheelbase based on distance comfort = less fatigue. I owned a '05 LeMond Versailles. It was a combination carbon and steel frame - "spine construction." Put a lot of miles on it. Soooo comfortable - great ride!

One of the best ways for a newbie to start cycling is a used bike. A lot of very nice bikes have spent most of their time just sitting. A good cleaning with the basic adjustments and you're ready to go. Just do what this guy did! The only thing left is the fit. First, measure your body to get your basic dimensions. Select your frame size accordingly. Don't be tempted to buy a frame that doesn't fit you just because it's a good deal. You can find tables of bike dimensions and corresponding height and inseam recommendations on the interweb. Once you have your proper sized frame, adjust the saddle height and for/aft position. Verify your correct stem size. Set your handlebar height with spacers or the old timey clamp. Once you have your basic setup, you can dial in the fine adjustment a few millimeters at a time. If you have lower back pain or soreness in your joints, something isn't right. Lower back pain may be caused by your handlebars being too low or a stem that's too long. Soreness on the backsides of your knees may be caused by a saddle that's too high. It's not unusual to have some muscle soreness when you're starting out. Keep your fitness goals reasonable. Slow steady progress is best, but don't be afraid to challenge yourself occasionally. After you've mastered some basics, go find a group to ride with.
