That was fun! Met my wonderful wife of 47 years now when I was working as a bicycle shop mechanic. Her sister and brother-in-law bought her a Miyata for her birthday, when she came back with it for the 2-week tune-up, it was love at first sight, and it still is!

settle a dispute for me- are most of the road bikes in vietnam still using 27-inch rims?

    • @bikeholic.saigon
      @bikeholic.saigon 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@tommurphy4307: Nope.
In Vietnam, we commonly use 29-inch (700c) road bikes. Very few women cyclists should use 650c due to their height.
We have been using disc brakes rather than rim brakes for the past 3-4 years. There are still old people who use rim brakes because they have not changed their bikes in a few years.
If you look at the "official market" based on branded name distributors, it may not accurately reflect reality. Vietnamese cyclists prefer high-end bikes like Pinarello, S-Work, Canyon, Trek, and Colnago, despite limited distribution of branded products in the country. And they purchase directly from the factory, then use a transportation agent or hand-carry by plane.
      That is funny, isn’t it?😂😂😂
Because Vietnam is known for its low average income and GDP. 🤣🤣🤣🤣

@@Bikespeeds Hi Simon , like the video , I had one of these in the 80's , so couldn't resist buying a Prototype Raleigh Record 2 , Carbon framed special , was on show at the NEC but missing since 1998 were it was sold to a private collector , I swopped an SL Columbus and £1500 cash for it , amazing bike , stopped the club meet last week in Birmingham everyone was amazed it exists still ! Has Mike Burrows carbon spoked wheelset ( TCR ) 7800 Dura Ace now but think it was 7700 when built .....

This looks so good, normally gold chains look naff on bikes but given the manufacturers colour scheme it really ties the whole bike together. I don't normally gush over older bikes but I would cherish this if it was mine.

Love these old Raleigh restorations... in the 70s / 80s they were real "parts bin specials", no concept of a "groupset"... my 82 Europa Team TI replica came with Raleigh / SR crankset bars and stem, Campag rear derailleur, SunRace front Derailleur, Shimano shifters, Weinmann brakes, SunTour freewheel block (14-24), and (probably) Maillard hubs with chrome steel rims. I upgraded to a Campag front mech and Campag hubs with Mavic MA40 rims (and new brake blocks for alloy rims) and it's a fabulous ride !

i chucked the shimano 600 parts 'group' that came standard on my '79 SR semi pro and put together a tasty chart of parts (period-correct, of course) online for her. i even scored some DTswiss spokes and laced up a couple of new wheels- it was like working in the bike shop all over again. i like to tell guys that i scrapped all the 'arabesque' parts for beer money just to piss them off (especially after they bust my chops for my metallic pink paint). i clocked the front wheel lace-job incorrectly so i got to do it twice....hey- it's been fifty years since i laced a wheel...gimme a break.

i wouldn't do it, but i worked in a toy store bike shop so you never knew what i was building- could have been a hedstrom tricycle or a muskin swiimming pool or even a sandbox or baby stroller- you'd be bored out of your gourd. when i got to work on road bikes i was a happy camper.

the original finish is always preferable when it comes to vintage bikes- just like vintage cars- especially if the bike was special-ordered in a custom color by the original owner. i have a 46-years young SR semi pro and i ordered it in an unusual color (pink metallic) because that was the cool thing about SR bikes (miki japan)- you could order your bike after choosing the paint color from a big book of color chips and have your baby delivered in less than a month.

Bikespeeds….The best on TH-cam no question.Awesome work as always.🙏A measure to watch.
Not had A Racer since my Puch free spirit 10speed that both myself and my brother had 1 each brand new when I was about 13yrs old in 1978 with the Gear Shifter handles on the handlebars which was different so this one is good to see.
Then Skateboards took over and god knows what happened to mine and my brothers bikes🤷‍♂️
Weird as you get older you wish you had kept just about everything you remember fondly growing up.I remember also having a Carlton 10Speed Racer that I put Cow Horn Handlebars on and ruining a good bike just so I could do wheelies and conform to what all my mates did with their bikes.

simon: one more thing to do with this bike (since it was crashed and there was impact on the handlebar/front brake lever) is to crouch in front of the bike at headset level, close one eye (your bad one if you have a bad eye) and sight the side of the head tube against the side of the saddle tube and ensure the edges of the tubes are EXACTLY parallel- only need to do this on one side, but good lighting really helps you see this. the human eye is amazingly accurate in judging the parallelness of the two tubes and any deviation from parallel (even a barely-discernable deviation) indicates a twisted frame and can really screw up the steering geometry of the bike. the other two things i mentioned to check could still check out OK, but if you see ANY deviation with this check- its time to double-check for frame-bend with your straight-edge, for sure. keep in mind that if you do any straightening ITS VERY EASY to overdo it and further distortion and/or weakening of the tubes will occur. PATIENCE is key here. good luck, guys.

When will people stop confusing restorations with rebuilds or reconditions? This was not restored. For example; what point is there in putting new bearings in a rusted and pitted headset? Waste of brand new bearings.

You can't beat the mechanical principals of a good old bike from this period. It's really pleasing on the eye and quite therapeutic to watch how you go through the process of cleaning and re-lubricating all the moving parts. It is something I do quite often in my garage too so I can appreciate the work you are showing us on this video today.

another impressive thing is how long kool-stops last. i've been using the international blacks for many years- i think i dressed my rims at least 3 or 4 times and those kool-stops bed right in and keep on truckin' every time. geez how much are they gonna cost when i finally go to buy some??

Wonderful to see an older Raletgh come back to life. When I was in school in the mid 1970's I worked at a Raleigh shop here in the States for two summers. I owned a Super Course and then an International. The owner of the shop was able to get a MKM (Metcalfe) frame for me and most of the parts from the International went over to it. Great times.

MKM- thats a keeper. hope you still have it. my riding buddy had a silver MKM back in the 70's- all 1st-gen dura-ace. we rode on some the first rail trails in northeast ohio right after the penn central went belly-up. great times from what i can remember (?!)
