Agree. Lawsuit guitars are often some of the best instruments ever made. If they were terrible, Fender and Gibson wouldn't have cared. From the late 60's to the mid 70's all of a sudden Japan began to put out instruments far better than anything Gibson and Fender were putting out at the time for a fraction of the price. They exposed the big companies for what they were - and still are. Remember the Gibson 'Play authentic' disgrace of a year or two ago? That was Gibson saying..."how dare you pay a fair price for a great instrument. Give us $2000 for an average Les paul thats a slightly different colour to last year." Hell Gibson themselves consider their instruments to be trash. They ran over an entire run of brand new Firebird X guitars with a tracker rather than let someone play and love them (Thats something that happens at a landfill not a guitar company). To them their guitars are disposable.

You weren't exaggerating!! The pluck, chunk, tight response, fluidity, wide berth and authority is legend. It doesn't do much for the theory about tone woods. Poplar,Ash,
Alder, korina, maple and the winner is .....
    pressed laminate!
I suppose it's an amalgam of factors, most of all... your hands!! You could make a 3 string plastic ukulele left in the sun for a month sound great Dave, you have that mojo magic flowing through your spirit coarsing through your veins and manifesting through you onto six strings and birthed into the universe through a 12inch Celestion for the Gods to behold and deem "pretty bitchin'".
God Speed and Good Fortune unto you David, coming from Highlandtown, Baltimore MD. Much love and respect

A lot of Jimmy Page's greatest work with Led Zep is done with a Danelectro DC59, which is a cheap laminate. Eric Clapton used one, even Jimi owned one.

    Hi Dave
Thank you for uploading all of the videos I have followed your stuff for a year or just over, your a great inspiration to alot of people in a bad time, and it's a shame for us Brits that we've lost (for now) a great musician to France.
I have just acquired a 70's Columbus strat in sunburst , it's a project and I want to re do the finish in an old fender cream colour but I also don't want to ruine the authenticity of the guitar, I already own a sunburst 2001 squier I wasn't keen to have two in sunburst but was wondering on people's thoughts, and hopefully yours.
The guitar doesn't owe me too much at this point.
    All the best
    Kh

Don't think that guitar wants to leave you... it will secretly follow you home... About a year ago i paid far too much money for an old 1980's Dylon strat copy that looked like it had been swimming. Rust, filth, missing knobs... And the laminate wood body cracking here and there. But i had to buy it because it looked sooo sad, and i could not stand the thought it would be scrapped somehow. And also, because back in 1988 or so, i bought one exactly like it, new in the box... That one is long gone though. Surprisingly, despite all the rust and water damage, everything still worked. After a lot of work it is a very fine guitar now. Thank you for the beautiful sounds! All the best wishes , to you all, from Holland

  • @timothy6966

This really reminds me of a strat my uncle got for me. He knows nothing about guitars. He just knew I played, and got me a 50 euro strat from the internet from some guy that had it hanging on the wall for 20 years or so. The thing was in dire shape when I got it. Everything was rusted, the strings were strung so tight the tremolo bridge was standing up at a 45 degree angle, and one of the tuning knobs fell off when I tried to turn it. I restrung it, set everything up correctly, and I was stunned to see the result. Even though it's clearly a really cheap knockoff of a Fender, it plays amazingly. It's easily one of the most comfortable guitars I've ever played. Plus the replacement tuning knob (made out of two nickels duct-taped together) looks really badass.

Dave, you sir are a legend in your own right. You aspire to be like John Frusciante and I believe wholeheartedly that you are just as talented as he is. That poor guitar was laying there just wanting to be allowed to have its voice heard and you saved it and let it sing and poured yourself out through it as you do every guitar you pick up.. It would be a travesty if you did not eventually own that guitar.
You sir, probably don't realize how many of us People of the Tube aspire to be able to speak through a guitar half as well as you do. You, Sir, are a guitar hero in your own right. Thanks for all you do!

I hate that guitar had to sit there for years neglected so badly too. But Dave, sometimes you got to put it back in the rack and slowly walk away and not look back..... You brought it back to life and it will be there ready to sing again. That guitar has never been played as well as you just did. You have so many great strats already man I wouldn't sweat it too much. I do understand your feelings though Dave. You tend to wear your heart on your sleeve, but that endearing quality is why we all like hanging around with you.😉

Hi Dave, another great demo! Dont despair about about the strat not belonging to you! I used to do a lot of luthiery, and at the time these guitars were put together with geneneric parts and were sold under different names. I had a virtually identical guitar which played exceptionally well, and was the sweetest strat I have ever come across. I gave it to a friend who is a top acoustic guitarist! So you may just find its twin. I will keep my eyes open for an equivalent, and message you! KenR

I listened to what you say in the beginning of the video after listening to how it plays :D So now, a funny thing, you are not the only guy who has reanimated a strat copy in the last days ;D A bandmate gave me his old Samick strat copy from 90s, (worth around 200 $ back then), no idea what model it is, but the jack input is kind of reversed, it has just two pots and five way selector. I found this guitar in our rehersal room and I was checking it out. It needed some attention: there was cracking noise while using the switch, the action was high, there was rust here and there, it was terribly dirty.
He said: you can take it if you want. I was like: oh, can I? Coo!.
I thought I will have to buy some parts to get it moving, I was wrong. I disassembled the guitar, put all the screws and other metal parts into glasses, poured cola, went to buy strings. I came back, washed and gently dried all parts with paper towels and the polished them with steel wool where it was needed.
I cleaned the selector switch with alcohol and paf! It's working good, no need for replacement. I assembled the body and prepared the neck for some fret leveling, which I did next morning, then crowned frets... then I've attached the neck back to the body and put new strings and did all the setup, like adjusting scale, truss rod, etc etc.
It's nothing special, just a budget strat copy, but I've never had a guitar with single coil pickups in my hands before and I really like the way this guitar behaves and sounds, it seems more dynamic than my humbucker equipped V. I really love how it sounds on tube screamer's 1/4 gain setting, with that creamy, gentle crunch. Had lots of fun with that guitar, repairing it was a great experience. :)
I hope you will be able to keep it, you deserve it, for giving it so much love and playing that incredible performance with it... it just belongs in your hands goddamn it!

    Beautiful Strat.
I have one just like it and I love how it sounds.
My guitar has the color of the neck, lighter.
    Made of maple wood.
