    Nice video. Had a egear Lamborghini Gallardo for 3 years which was pretty awesome, although they can be rather troublesome and darn expensive when they go wrong - Egear specifically (automated manual). I found this vid while doing some research on reliability of transmissions in R8s before maybe buying one. I actually hadn't thought of buying a manual till I just seen this, might be the better car actually. Cheers.

      @@ScottishCarClan
      Thanks for the response. I'm not sure on which to go for tbh. There's a premium to pay for Gen 2 obviously as it's newer and has more power but i think the Gen 1 just looks better although age does usually come with increased maintenance costs.
      I've heard about the leaking shocks and tbh that does give me reservations as does the coking up of the inlets and the potential lifetime of a clutch. I suppose that's the the "cost of ownership" with an R8 though.
      R8 in Scotland seem rare so having to consider UK wide models of which there are a few. I'm just not sure!

    • @ScottishCarClan
      @ScottishCarClan  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@petesky007 Leaking shocks can be replaced for around £450 per corner or swap them out for a decent set of coilovers. As for clutch because you're looking at S Tronic you don't really need to worry there, being the dual clutch it doesn't really wear out. The old R-Tronic, very different story! Try both, the gen 1 is a much more relaxed drive whereas the gen 2 feels a bit more frantic, really it will just depend on what you're after.

    • @petesky007
      @petesky007 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ScottishCarClan Again, thanks for the response!
      I had heard the S-Tronic was much less detrimental to the clutch and you're confirming that, great.
      I have been costing up options and the KWv3 coilovers seem to be in excess of £4k, I wouldn't do a budget product and the H&R's for the R8 are reportedly quite a harsh ride and I don't fancy that either - I feel too old for a harsh ride!
      Obviously, I'd expect Gen2 to have none of the above issues and I've not heard of any significant issues with them bit I'm sure something will surface over time.

    • @petesky007

    • @ScottishCarClan
      @ScottishCarClan  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Something isn't right there Jerry, one world I could never use on this R8 is abrupt - everything has a lovely germanic smoothness to it. My first R8's clutch failed at 18k miles. The slave cylinder leaked and contaminated the friction plate and the symptoms were similar to what you describe.

    On many of the early models the clutch had to be replaced after only 80-90 000 km and the cost is/was as high as around £ 4000.
    And the FSI system makes it VERY important to use the recommended engine oil and filter and VERY important to change the engine oil and filter every 10 - 15 000 km.
    As with the majority of other cars/brands as well. "Long Life shifts" every 30 000 km kills the engine in any car.

    • @janomnia
      @janomnia ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cagsanozbek4210 Yes, the first models from 2006 to around 2008.
      Depending on how it is driven, how many owners etc As far as I know vs the clutch. My experience with an Audi R8 from 2008 after only 80 000 km and info about this online on TH-cam etc. On the early models like this it is possible to use the flywheel/clutch from the V10 version on the V8 version as far as I know = much better/stronger clutch that last longer than usual on the V8 version. The construction leads to very high temperature in the clutch area. But look online for more info vs the flywheel/clutch.

I can only speak for myself and I would say that it depends on each specific car. How it is driven and how it is taken care of.

      Robert, a walnut blast tends to be the most common. Keep away from the promises of chemical injections in this case as the carbon must be manually removed.

    Any thoughts or experience with shift-fork issues on 07/08 model? Currently looking at one 08 model and a bit worried about it. Cost seems to vary and Audi has been supporting within the first 10 years apparently but 08 is coming up to the 13 year mark and I doubt they would be inclined to still cover it even though the 08 model I am looking to test drive on Saturday only has 35k miles on it. Any experience, thoughts, price information would be greatly appreciated. Keep up the great video content. Thanks in advance - Marc

    • @ScottishCarClan
      @ScottishCarClan  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Marc, sorry for the slow reply. The shift fork issue is specific to the R-Tronic gearbox, have you considered a manual transmission to avoid this issue? If an R-Tronic is still your preference check the service records or ask the seller if a calibration has been carried out under their ownership. The good news is if the shifter forks are worn (or any related components) it should be easy to spot on the test drive. Switch the car to 'Sport' mode for the gearbox and try a few 4,000 rpm + up and down shifts. This will really tax the forks / syncro's and you'll hear it crunch as it tries to select a gear if worn. I hope your test drive went well?

      Hey Villaman. 2012 is when we can say it changed for sure. Theres a big plate welded in there after that point. What I'm about to say has no official clarification but I have seen a 2007 & 2009 car and the 2009 did appear to have larger welds around the area susceptible to cracking.

    Hi, would you know of any issues with the quattro system? Also would you say these v8 2007-8s have bottomed out price wise. I know its all mileage related with prices at the moment for the early ones with seeing stuff between £30-46k for low to 70k ish miles...but in your opinion have you seen them go below £30k or do you think they have reached the minimum depreciation values for the mk1? All opinion but I'd like to hear yours...looking to buy one and maintain myself so your vids are inspiring me to take the plunge.

    • @ScottishCarClan
      @ScottishCarClan  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Mr dood! It's largely believed that Audi updated the design somewhere around the 2010 model year. There was never an official bulletin (as this would have meant AUDI GMBH admitting a defect and having to recall earlier cars). One other thing I'd say on this topic is generally they crack on the right hand side (if looking at the car from the rear) - there does appear to be more left hand drive cars with cracks - my theory on this is with a left hand drive car, the right side of the car rides alongside the kerb with more potholes, chance of debris on the road etc.

    Great review, unfortunately it re-ennforces that the build quality on these other manufacturers for these and other premium cars is sadly lacking. I've had a ton of mainstream cars without the type of issues you've listed. Not highlighting Audi in particular. German build quality is a fantasy, bored of how many people say how good it is. I've driven run of the mill manufacturers hard for 100k and not needed anything you've listed to be fixed. Even the parts cost is a joke when they are used across the various groups, yet because of the badge you get charged a massive premium.
    Either way great summary. Can you do a gen 2 review?

      Thanks for the comment Brian. Yes it can sometimes be disappointing but on the whole R8's do tend to be pretty well made with most problems being pretty easy to rectify! With so much shared with the Lamborghini Gallardo you could view it as a bargain as it costs so much less! But I do appreciate your point.
