    I hope Toyota is watching this, and they start putting spares back in their vehicles.

      Yup. Totally rules out this model for me, even though it's the perfect match for what i need in every other way. Oh well darn, have to consider other options, maybe mazda or subaru, as the rav4 is just a little too big

    I’ve had two flats in my 2024 cross. Each time was towed to dealership, and both times they didn’t have the tire in stock. Since I have road service and tire warranty, it was all free. But the inconvenience was annoying and scary. (Side of road at night for over an hour)
    This video convinced me to buy the spare, jack, and this cool insert.
    Thanks!!

    Anson, I just found you on Reddit. I've been shopping the Corolla Cross Hybrid, but hate that it doesn't include a spare. Thanks for doing this! It's very impressive work. If I buy the car I will definitely get your kit! (And FUCK Toyota marketing and engineers for failing to do this themselves!)

      Seriously don't understand how they think that this is okay to not include a spare in the Hybrid model. Absolutely wild.

    • @thumbtech
      @thumbtech 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@hottpinkpenguin Well, full-size spares are a thing of the past due to weight, space & cost. The donuts really aren't great ... driving should be quite limited on those things. The repair kits *do* work for the typical nail/screw puncture. If you really wanted protection for an "unsealable" tire, I might consider run-flats.

    I am thinking of buying a spare tire, but with this solution there is so much space lost without a reason (below the tire, in the middle of the tire, on the sides). I would consider covering the tire with a cloth and using the full cargo space without the cargo liner, possibly also removing the plastics placed on the sides.

  • @geot4647

      I make the parts out of PETG which is slightly flexible compared to other common plastics. It has held up over 10k California miles in my own car to date.

      No original parts are modified with this kit and it is a no drill/drop in install. It's up to the manufacturer to show that the aftermarket kit caused a problem. To be safe, the kit can be easily removed and the original foam block replaced before bringing the vehicle in for service.

    Can you estimate what the size of the largest printed part in the assembly is? Thinking i can use this as justification to convince my wife that I need a 3d printer, but I end up getting one with too small of a work area, we're both going to be mad. 😂

  • @DefundTheFringes
    @DefundTheFringes 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Another guy installed this kit and didn't seem to need a floor shim, but the video (q3KR0V3p75Q) was low on details. Is yours a thicker spare or he might he have not bothered to make sure the cargo floor was supported evenly? Also, what about heat-dissipation above the battery? That foam block seems to have a hollow base, hard to tell without seeing it in person.

    • @hardhikes
      @hardhikes  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      My spare may be a bit thicker than his due to the protrusion of the rim past the tire. The foam spacer is supported along the sides by the plastic cargo deck underneath it that you can see before I put the spacer in. There’s some empty space in the distance between the cargo deck and the spare tire rim but it’s not much and the cargo load should be evenly distributed between the tire and spacer/cargo deck if you measure the spacer height correctly.

    • @DefundTheFringes
      @DefundTheFringes 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@hardhikes Thanks, this is clearly a "devil's in the details" situation. I'm wondering about warranty issues when something big is put so close to a critical component. If I get this car, I may opt for just stowing a bagged spare on a passenger seat and moving it as needed. The car needs a bigger gas tank, too.

    I currently have a FULL SIZE spare wheel-tire : 215/65R17.
    Measuring the fit -- it appears that this FULL size spare depth will rise above the floor several inches (about 5" or 6-inches}, depending upon the depth-fit of the MOUNT-block.
    Still, this retrofit Mount Upgrade would be better than just strapping the full-sized spare to the floor -- since that currently rises a full 10-inches above the floor, and makes the cargo bay mostly unusable.
    ?? Anyone attempted to mate this retrofit Tire Mount Upgrade with a full-size spare wheel-tire ??
    [I travel in rural Saskatchewan often far from assistance : a spare tire is a necessary safety feature.]

      Today I've got the FULL size spare standing vertical, against the LHS-sidewall, not bad,
      but YOUR MOUNT-BLOCK will be a better option. I'll buy one. THANKs for that quick reply.

    Sorry. I was excited till I saw the $400 price tag. It's a 3d printed parts with a couple of bolts. And it's a lead time of 3 months! That's insane. I'd like a spare but I'm not adding one at nearly $600-$700 by the time the tire is in there. If I blow a tire I have it on my insurance.
