    I hope Toyota is watching this, and they start putting spares back in their vehicles.

    Brilliant! I have a corolla cross hybrid coming in a couple of weeks and wasn't thrilled about not having a spare.

    I’ve had two flats in my 2024 cross. Each time was towed to dealership, and both times they didn’t have the tire in stock. Since I have road service and tire warranty, it was all free. But the inconvenience was annoying and scary. (Side of road at night for over an hour)
    This video convinced me to buy the spare, jack, and this cool insert.
    Thanks!!

    Anson, I just found you on Reddit. I've been shopping the Corolla Cross Hybrid, but hate that it doesn't include a spare. Thanks for doing this! It's very impressive work. If I buy the car I will definitely get your kit! (And FUCK Toyota marketing and engineers for failing to do this themselves!)

      Seriously don't understand how they think that this is okay to not include a spare in the Hybrid model. Absolutely wild.

      @@hottpinkpenguin Well, full-size spares are a thing of the past due to weight, space & cost. The donuts really aren't great ... driving should be quite limited on those things. The repair kits *do* work for the typical nail/screw puncture. If you really wanted protection for an "unsealable" tire, I might consider run-flats.

    Looks like you did a good job on this design. The lack of a spare was holding me back from buying a CC hybrid. But now I may go for it. Either that or buy the Rav4 hybrid and get a little less mileage in the city.

    Very good demonstration. The lack of a spare has been holding me back from buying a Corolla Cross. Where do you purchase all the spare tire set-up parts and are they expensive? Thank you.

    • @hardhikes
      @hardhikes  24 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      You can purchase the spare tire from Toyota or 3rd party vendors or a scrapyard. I sell the kit on my website. You can see the details at ansonliu.com/2024/05/corolla-cross-hybrid-spare-wheel-tire/

    I am thinking of buying a spare tire, but with this solution there is so much space lost without a reason (below the tire, in the middle of the tire, on the sides). I would consider covering the tire with a cloth and using the full cargo space without the cargo liner, possibly also removing the plastics placed on the sides.

      Thank you! I don’t have a similar addon for the Prius due to not having a Prius to measure. If the Prius has a similar cable lever and bracket, this may work with some adjustments.

    Definitely want a spare. Why would you not want one. Just bought a 2024 cx5. Thank god it came with a spare. I got a flat in the middle of no where. And we couldnt use that stupid liquid crap that they give you in some cars. My tire did not have a nail but the side wall got punchered.

    Sorry. I was excited till I saw the $400 price tag. It's a 3d printed parts with a couple of bolts. And it's a lead time of 3 months! That's insane. I'd like a spare but I'm not adding one at nearly $600-$700 by the time the tire is in there. If I blow a tire I have it on my insurance. You'd sell 5 times more of these if you cut the price in half.

    Where do you get the sapcer that goes on top of the spare tire after it is installed?

    • @hardhikes
      @hardhikes  หลายเดือนก่อน

      You cut the spacer from foam board or wood/plastic using the width of your spare tire and the guideline dimensions in my post at ansonliu.com/2024/05/corolla-cross-hybrid-spare-wheel-tire/#cargo-deck-riser-spacer-method

    Are you sure plastic will hold up under constant vibration stress with the momentum of the tire pressing against it?

    • @hardhikes
      @hardhikes  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I make the parts out of PETG which is slightly flexible compared to other common plastics. It has held up over 10k California miles in my own car to date.

      @@hardhikesA long term report on that would be useful. Have you driven on washboard dirt roads for any serious length? Having to raise the whole cargo floor isn't great, unless some models of spares don't require that.

  • @jicalzad

    does this void any Toyota warranties? Otherwise, this seems like a great solution

    • @hardhikes
      @hardhikes  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      No original parts are modified with this kit and it is a no drill/drop in install. It's up to the manufacturer to show that the aftermarket kit caused a problem. To be safe, the kit can be easily removed and the original foam block replaced before bringing the vehicle in for service.

    how about a side mounted spare just like the old Land Cruisers ?

    • @hardhikes
      @hardhikes  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I designed the mount to repurpose the empty space under the cargo area like most sedans and hatchbacks.
      I would consider making a side mount if I ever needed to fit a second tire in the back.

  • @igh574
    @igh574 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I currently have a FULL SIZE spare wheel-tire : 215/65R17.
    Measuring the fit -- it appears that this FULL size spare depth will rise above the floor several inches (about 5" or 6-inches}, depending upon the depth-fit of the MOUNT-block.
    Still, this retrofit Mount Upgrade would be better than just strapping the full-sized spare to the floor -- since that currently rises a full 10-inches above the floor, and makes the cargo bay mostly unusable.
    ?? Anyone attempted to mate this retrofit Tire Mount Upgrade with a full-size spare wheel-tire ??
    [I travel in rural Saskatchewan often far from assistance : a spare tire is a necessary safety feature.]

    • @hardhikes
      @hardhikes  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      This mounting method will fit the full size tire as well, but you’ll need to raise the cargo floor by an extra 3 inches then I show in tue video with a spacer.

      "... This mounting method ... the full size tire ... raise the cargo floor by an extra 3 inches ..."
      ONLY THREE inches -- that's better than either strap-down choice I've attempted.
      Today I've got the FULL size spare standing vertical, against the LHS-sidewall, not bad,
      but YOUR MOUNT-BLOCK will be a better option. I'll buy one. THANKs for that quick reply.
