  • This truck was hydrolocked, had a bent rod, and the crankshaft counterweight was striking the piston skirt repeatedly. Not your everyday rod knock!

I just went and was looking at a newer 2007 GMC Sierra, I have a 2000 GMC Sierra and it runs great but was thinking about upgrading to a newer model. When I started this 2007 GMC Sierra it was making almost the exact same noise as this!!

Uh oh, that's not good. This truck was crashed into water and the motor was hydrolocked. Luckily it was a cheap fix with used parts and ran fantastic for years until it was wrecked again by the next owners.

@@CheapskateGarage It was at a dealer, told the guy I had to talk to my mechanic about that noise before I went any further. The sales rep insisted it was because of the cold weather and sitting on the lot for too long - but had a bad feeling about it.

My 02 silverado with 308,000 miles just started doing the same thing. I havent got into it yet. Have you figured out what is causing yours?

Yeah, but you likely won't have the same issue. Due to the frequency of the noise, it was definitely in the bottom end. I ended up having a bent rod and a cracked piston. Since the rod had been shortened, the counterweight on the crank was hitting the piston skirt at bottom dead center. That's what cracked the piston. The whole thing started when the previous owner rolled it in some water. I guess they tried starting it without pulling the plugs and draining the water out of the cylinders.
If your noise is happening at the same frequency as mine, you probably are experiencing rod knock. With that many miles, I wouldn't be surprised if one of your rod bearings was worn out.

I tore it apart and it had hydro locked. I'm guessing the head gasket let loose friday after I parked it and filled the cylinder full of antifreeze. When I went to start it on monday it didnt compress the antifreeze and bent the rod. The piston is touching the crank. The cylinder wall is jacked up.

TJ Dennis Sorry to hear about your cylinder wall. I got lucky, and though the crank had been hitting the piston, there was no damage to the block or crank in any way. I got away with getting a used piston and rod, and new rod bearings. Only cost about $100 total to fix the engine. Mine had happened at 125K, but only because the previous owner had rolled the truck (apparently in deep water) and then tried to start it again.

Mine is making the same noise. Just after I changed the water pump, oil pressure is 21 until it's warm then it's 40 psi. Lucas oil stabilizer is what is keeping it running.
