Truck with a 100,000 mile warranty.
    Mile 99,999 - Dealer: "I don't hear anything."
Mile 100,001 - Dealer: "You need a new engine!"

You might want to check the valve clearance. Also, the gas may make a different but its not to likely. I have a 2017 LT Z71 and the owners manual said use 91 Octane or higher. I run the Lucas oil Upper Engine and Injector cleaner in all my vehicle, every other tank of gas. I run 89 Octane and the Lucas oil bumps the Octane rating over 91. I had a 2005 Ford Super Duty 6 liter diesel, ran the Lucas oil in that one too. We bullet proofed the engine 5 years ago and took a look at the engine's upper end and injectors. All of the parts were spotless, very clean and never had a tick in the engine. Oil is cheap, we changed the oil every 5,000 miles and never had a single issue. The Ford has 140,000 mile on it, and mechanically, never a hiccup. Regular oil changes are just cheap insurance. Enjoy your videos, liked the oil change one, thanks.

I have a 2017 Denali with the 6.2 with around 20k miles.....has the EXACT same sound. Sounds like a sticky lifter, but its not a lifter. Most people say its the high pressure fuel pump. Its cool to say not to worry about it, but pulling up next to a building with a 60 thousand dollar truck and hearing what sounds like a loud, bad lifter is kind of bullshit....IMO.

I know the 5.3 Vortex noise is the lifter. They're hydraulic which means they pass oil directly through them and up the center of the lifter rod to funnel oil up to the valve train. The problem with the early 2004+ ones was that the channel in the lifter was too small and crud could build up in them. Then the tap will show itself as the lifter rod just taps the rocker with no lubrication leading to that rhythmic tapping.
The solution I saw for it was to spray carb cleaner down the rod and let sit for a day before starting the engine back up. The cleaner will dissolve most of the carbon crud and allow oil to pass through the lifter again and up the rod.
Just make sure to get constant 3000 miles oil changes.

Absolutely it is nothing to worry about, all of these trucks do it and that is okay. It is not a problem, there is nothing wrong with any of them. My 03 with 300k does it & has done it since day 1 & it runs like a clock with absolutely no issues. My dads 06 did it the whole time he owned it from 150 miles - 180k (8+ years) with absolutely no problems at all the whole time. His next truck a 2011 did it too, it definitely wasn’t as loud in the 2011 as the 03 & 06 but the noise was still there & it had no issues for the 7 years & 150k++ he had it. And last but not least the 2018 he just bought brand spanking new at the beginning of last year does it as well. Again not as loud as the earlier models I mentioned and it is even a bit quieter then the 2011, but the sound is still there. It now has about 18k and not a single problem. From what I’ve seen it seems to be getting quieter in the newer generation engines. I’m curious about the 2019’s and if the 2020’s will even make this noise at all. Anyone here have a 2019 5.3? Does your engine make the ticking/tapping noise?

My 2001 Silverado has been doing the same thing for at least 15 years. I have never had anything done to the engine except oil changes. It still runs like new with over 200 thousand miles and yes it still makes the same noise when you first crank it up, but after about three minutes or less it stops. This usually happens after you let them sit up over night. I love mine and have no plans on getting rid of it.

My 2006 has 298,000 miles on it. The ticking started about 30k ago, not just at startup but while driving too. It comes and goes, but gets more frequent as mileage racks up. I always use Mobil 1 synthetic and change oil religiously. One thing I noticed, is the ticking noise goes away right after fresh oil change, then shows up occasionally once oil gets to around 70%, and progressively more often as the oil gets older. Then when I change the oil, the ticking goes away…and the cycle starts again. One time I added an oil viscosity additive, and the ticking stopped right away…until it came back eventually. Otherwise truck runs perfect.
One other observation, the ticking is more frequent with around town driving, but never seems to come up during long highway road trips.

First thing everyone should do is Stop using Mobil 1. . It is a really a crap oil. I used to have the exact same experience described in all of my trucks GM and Dodge. When I quit using M1 10 years ago the problems disappeared. Just about any other oil will eliminate the sound. I run Penzzoil Ultra and Castrol Edge in everything. No such problems ever since dumping M1.

But it is a 60 year old design and still currently used, even in the new 2020 mid engine corvette.

Just a heads up, what I hear is the Fuel Purge Valve. It is located to the right of your throttle body and feeds to your Intake. $30 part. Chevy OEM FPV is notorious for being noisy. If you put your hand on the throttle body and on the FPV , you can "feel" what youre hearing. Almost like a distinct grinding sound/feel. I put some Dynamat extreme on mine when I replaced it. .....and noise is GONE. AFM lifters will be much noisier when they go. Yours has no problems....yet. Up the oil viscosity as recommended by owners manual for your weather conditions. You'd be surprised how heavy you can go and still be under mfg recommendations.

I had a Blazer 4.3 Vortec (the worst). It had a very common problem, blown intake gasket. After the job, it started ticking very loud, known as a collapsed lifter. Apparently loosened debris blocked oil entry into a hydraulic lifter port. I put Wynn's Hydraulic Valve Lifter Treatment in the CC. The ticking got a lot quieter in about 30 seconds. It totally went away after about a half hour and I would barely hear it for a few seconds on cold winter mornings. It is very important to use the specified weight oil. Push rod/rocker engines usually require lower viscosity oil than over head valve engines. The oil needs to be more fluid to pass through the push rods to lube the rockers while over head cam engines don't have this path. You can also add a half quart of transmission fluid to the oil to clean and lube noisy lifters.

It's the vacuum pump. These gdi engine don't produce enough vacuum to operate the brake booster properly. It's more noticeable on the driver side because the v-pump is were the power steering used to be. Hope this helps.

I had an 05 gmc sierra z71 with the same problem. I got rid of my with gunk motor flush and seafoam. It had 263k miles on it and it STILL runs like a boss!
I also recommend using Lucas oil stabilizer. That stuff keeps the top end of motor lubricated well and eliminates dry starts. I sold my truck to a friend and it still runs like a boss. Got a 2015 GMC now and I'm going to do the same thing to this one. It worked for me. Hope this helps

There's a couple things that cause the ticking noise
    1. A dirty VLOM filter (Under oil pressure switch for AFM/DOD systems)
    2. 0w-20 or 5w-30 oil caused wear on a lifter bore.
    3. Blow-by carbon causing stuck lifters or wearing lifter bore
When the VLOM filter gets clogged the solenoids don't receive enough pressure to activate the AFM lifters, so they shut down. You may flush your block, thinking it fixed it, but you just pushed the dirt through the filter. Also when a lifter shuts down it can cause a very slight wear on a lifter bore. Even with as little as 15,000 miles this system can fail. What happens now is the lifter is full of oil and starts to rise from the camshaft , but the bore has enough wear in it to bleed off the oil from the lifter cause it to hop on the camshaft. GM should have never designed a lifter with .150 of travel after the .030-.080 of preload. They should have stayed at .020 of travel, sleeved the lifter bores, and added a full oil ring the lifters. An easy test is to use 0w-40 or 10w-40. If the noise quiets down your lifter bore or bores have a slight wear. The only reason they want 0w-20 or 5w-30 is for the AFM/DOD solenoids and VVT response time. If you don't have the AFM/DOD system it's most likely a worn lifter bore from the thin oil. That being said the LS aluminum block are noising.
This is also common problem with aluminum valve bodies in transmissions nowadays. The slightest wear in the anodized film can cause the vehicle to not up shift, downshift, or have flares lift the clutches are slipping.

@@larrywarolin7215 Boy, I just bought a 2014 Sierra 1500, SLT, Z71. only has 27k miles, owner only droved on weekends, to HD/ Lowe's and probably DD!🤣. My first GMC was 2003, droved til 170k, only issue was a transfer case, which I replaced @ 140k. Wondering if I should buy extend warranty, like 48mo/40km. Dealer offering, B- B. 3k. Crazy! Only issue I noticed is when I use the breaks, if above 40MPH it viabrated. Should've done my homework prior to invest in this pile of problems.

My 2003 Chevy Silverado 5.3 has 219,000 miles on it and it just started making that ticking sound when I start the engine up probably no more than six months ago. I think it’s the hydraulic valve lifter leaking out because it goes away after a little while. Not too concerned about it. Thanks for the video👍

My trusted mechanic said a couple ways to fix it. 1. 100 miles before an oil change, put recommended cap fulls of sea foam in it and run it for 100 miles, then change oil. May take several future oil changes to hopefully quit. 2. Drain oil, put in transmission fluid as a replacement, and run it for 6-8 hours. Then change oil. That would probably cost over $100 in gasoline. I am trying #1 personally.

I got a 06 Silverado with the 5.3 had a tick, bought a can of sea foam and followed the instructions for how much to put in the oil, left it in for about 500 miles to really do its job and when I changed the oil after the 500, no tick. It’s been about 10,000 miles since then and still no tick

the new ecotec3 series motors (4.3, 5.3 & 6.2) are all direct injected and all seem to have a slight “ticking” that’s associated with this type of injection system. I have a 2018 Sierra with the 5.3 with only 3000 miles on it and it sounds the same. Has since day one when I picked it up at the dealer. GM service tech assured me it’s perfectly normal sound. However they did mention the top tier gasoline you spoke as being the best option for DI engines.

  • @1RoadGarage

My (new to me) 2003 Chevy Suburban with the 5.3 (74k miles) makes a tick but I've always assumed it has to do with the injection system. It sounds more like a "good" or normal tick than anything. What I'm trying to figure out is this whistle/whining noise that's just started. I can hear it mostly from the driver's seat. Like it's a vacuum leak but the only vacuum lines I can see under the hood in that area are okay.
    Have any input on that?

    • @DustinT
      @DustinT  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Wow that thing is low mileage! Hmm, hard to say without hearing the sound. I would check the intake, that would be easy to do, I’ve heard them make a funny noise if they are loose. And as for the vacuum line, I know what you mean. Is there a pinhole prick somewhere in it maybe? Other than those two things, maybe the alternator?
