    After some initial pleasant cruising on an unseasonably warm October's day, and a chance open slot in a boatyard's works calendar for some blacking, everything seems like it was going to plan! But plans can stretch on for longer and require much more patience (and money) than you think!

    Bloody brilliant Robbie. Highs, lows, stress, under-cover filming, fisheye lens, cooking, theft, pub of the week, blacking, fantastic shots and of course broken glasses! What else is there!

    There once was a narrow-boater called Robbie
    Who sat down on the throne for a jobbie,
    The toilet-roll holder was bare,
    So he thought he would share,
    Being a boat-tuber is one hell of a hobby!

    Difficult times Robbie.
    All boaters suffer similar problems.
    The place and time are different that's all.
    A pint well deserved.
    Carry on crankin Robbie.

    Bit weird to rewatch this again lol. I ended up coming back from Naburn to River Ouse with the bloke at 26:46 yesterday, who coincidentally remembered me from one of my first trips on our boat - almost spinning completely in the wind while waiting for the dodgy lift bridge and kissing his boat. Luckily, he was cool 😅

    It was nice to see Stanilands Boatyard again. I've known it for sixty years or so, and my father-in-law's boat was launched there (40 foot deGroot hull he fitted out himself). I've even attended parties in the big shed - and had tea with the old lady in the bungalow, who I think was the original owner. They certainly seem to have tarted up the club house!

    Hi Robbie! It's Freddi from the Crank it crew! I'm so sorry for your bad luck recently!! You've still managed to inspire me and my partner John to move onto a narrowboat next year, even with all these possible problems. You portray a lifestyle that is so real and inspiring to us so I thank you sir. Loving the content, and thanks for the shout out!
    By the way, if you're ever on the River Avon, give us a shout!
    See ya!

    😂 famous last words “Oh Shhhh” god blimey! That was a horrible vid, don’t mean horrible in that way, horrible for you in that marina. That scumbag in the van nicking the diesel gotta be a pikey, there’s loads around Thorne and Donny unfortunately. Stress or what? All in the past now. You’ve made it through from the dark side. Keep on Crankin’it.

  • @normanboyes4983

    The sad thing is one of those people who was smiling at chatting to you (and possibly working on your boat) tipped off the pikey who had it away with your diesel. Good film as usual.👍

    I completely felt your pain in this video! We had problems with our first two Japanese import camper vans and eventually it was my main vehicle and our mechanic had it for months, leaving me housebound. Week after week I'd call and get "I'm fixing it next week" and he really took the mickey. Sadly as it was so unique, there were only a handfuL of people in the country who knew how to repair them, so vowed never to go for a specialist camper again.
    And it drives me mad that some people think they're entitled to others' stuff while the rest of us work hard to buy things. Sadly it's not surprising that it happened in Thorne either :( I don't know the place that well, but my family are ALWAYS saying how it's not great there.
    Nice to see Barnby Dun :) I grew up in Armthorpe, a short drive away from there :)

    Great vlog Robbie, although I felt your pain with all the frustrating mishaps. I actually bought my boat 2 years ago from Nationwide Narrowboat Sales just up the cut from Staniland. They were lazy rip-off shysters! I came away with the feeling that it's the culture up there to do as little as possible, cut corners, fail to communicate and charge for work not undertaken but think they can get away with it with their 'Yorkshire charm'. If I never visit Thorne again it'll be way too soon. Keep on cranking!

    Just caught up with this (after having watched a few bits of your travels on BBC4). So gutted for you. As a former Thornesian, in fact I lived for a time alongside the canal just a stone throw from Stanilands, I can only say how sorry I am you had such a rough time in the place. Your diesel theft doesn’t surprise me any as there are some right thieving little scrotes in the area. I do miss the canal but not so much Thorne. So love your vids and an insight into your travels.

    I grew up not far from there on the other side of the Trent, in fact my late father was involved in the building of the original Keadby power station (the current one was built on the same site) that you show, but I've never been along the canal from Keadby to Thorne. It feels strange to be sat in Ampang, Malaysia watching you traveling waterways I never managed to explore myself. One day maybe. I recognise some of the places so clearly but have only ever seen them from land. I hope things looked up for you after your boatyard woes.

    My dad was telling me my grandad used to do everything himself with their gas pipes (as most people did in those days 50s-60s) and check for gas leaks with his lighter. Times have changed somewhat since then.

    Just an observation, never heat up any food which is still in the Tin , as the plastic seal at each end ,as well as the plastic lining inside the tin will contaminate / leach the heated contents you are about to eat. !

    Red widebeam at 7:40 that was me "Lukas". Second mooring in from the railway bridge, we used to get a lot of stones thrown over from the tracks, by the local youths. The trouble with Stanilands is the club is open to the public, so you get a few non-boaters in there, probably the derv thief was amongst them. Though I'm sure the gate was on by 2017.

    • @RobbieCumming
      @RobbieCumming  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Lukas. The gate was on but it was left open. Still can’t believe all that happened 😂

    • @cujomojo
      @cujomojo 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't suppose the CCTV saw anything either, the clubhouse is surrounded by cameras. Can't have been long after you were there that I moved to Long Sandal, never fully trusted the guys at Stanilands. Ryan is a good lad, probably the best one there, was never really keen on the others. Learnt the hard way to always be there when they were moving my boat, just had the hull blacked in the outdoor drydock and they put a 12ft gash down the side while bringing it out. Not to mention the bent prop, wasn't bent when I got there. I checked the weed hatch before it went in, didn't have no proof though. Bluewater complain a lot about the blocks floating out of the drydock and damaging their boats further down the canal.

    Oh Rob - so sorry for all your troubles! Well done for keeping cheerful (sort of). Glad you got the BSS in the end, but that white van man needs some serious karma happening to him for thieving your diesel, and no doubt it will, whether you find out about it or not.

    Heading south in October is smart. I wonder why I don't see more active snowbirding in England. I mean you can't get to the tropics, but Kent is still Warmer than Ripon, which is cooler in summer.

      Well it’s funny I actually experienced a much milder winter in Leeds 2016/2017 than my colleagues in the midlands who faced much colder temperatures that froze the canals three times (as opposed to once for me). Also wintee fuel (coa)l is a hell of alot cheaper!

    Its all very well to have a boat safety certificate, but is there a list of everything they check with guidelines on how everything needs to be in order to comply. If not, then its like telling you that you'll be tested on something but we're not telling you what.

    • @RobbieCumming
      @RobbieCumming  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is a bit like that, especially for a first timer like myself. And there is a list, but it is soooo long and updated every so often so it would be very hard to get everything spot on. And also some BSS examiners have different priorities in terms of what they look for.

    Good morning Rob I have a question for you. On one of your programs (which we enjoyed you were cooking your dinner. I just wondered do you have a slow cooker? If not why not? They would be an asset to you fresh veg and meat cooking all day for a few pence in electric, and when you moor up dinner is cooked a good stew/casserole will be ready then.

    Robbie, I think the initial price for blacking your boat was to good to be true and acted like bait, the place may have a shady side to it.
    Its like those car repair services that offer a repair at lower cost to do a lets say a tire rotation than their competitors and then mysteriously a whole bunch for new problems appear in your seaming perfectly working engine? In the states the practice is called a tearing down, its where repair person does small damages, makes leaks and other problems. Your first repair turns into several repairs much more expensive then the first which you then reluctantly let them repair because you feel you have no choice (nowhere to go).
    Then in a remote marina someone all of the sudden someone is casing you (I think someone informed whoever stole your diesel of your situation) and then steals your diesel and 90 liters that's a lot to carry without planning. Yet it could easily be resold there later in that very same marina.
    All I am saying is that you may want a list of reputable repair marinas in some of the routes that you take, research them in the same way you would research the stops in your voyage. its better to be safe then have expansive aggravations. I wish you well.

    • @harveysmith100
      @harveysmith100 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was thinking exactly the same thing.
      The leak that took over a week to fix. Oh we need to get some parts in etc. They were standard plumbing fittings available everywhere.
      It could all be coincidence. Yea sure.

    • @erraticuk
      @erraticuk 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd bet money on someone at that marina informed on his fuel left out. Funny how he only got leaks after they looked at his engine. Is there a website or app where people report this kind of thing.
