That crane looking thing at 11:16 caught my attention. You know I look at these through a model builder's eye as much as simply enjoying the story and scenery.
Yes there are a few of those about usually in towns/city wharves. You’ll love the next Hamburg vlog - I went to Minatur Wunderland, have you heard of it?
@@RobbieCumming Yes! Minatur Wunderland is an amazing thing; the work they do is really something. I have to ask, is that next Hamburg vlog 'next' relative to the 2016 publishing date of this, or 'next' relative to the October 30, 2018 date of today?
Another great video, loved the bridge at 9 mins with all the solar system stars in the brick work, must be nice having the whole canal to yourself with them great views :)
Hey Robbie, It was great to see your float thru Blackburn. I have heard the worse about the place. One friend of mine said he was down in his weed hatch 10 different times just to get through. No matter what you hear you have to keep trying it. Some people have bad times down there. If that's the case, above all I say above all stay away. They have to know that those situations are real but not always are they 100% gonna happen. You can jump through the hoops sometimes, without any bad stuff happening. I am a narrowboat owner who was born in Backburn. I plan on retuning this summer to do the Leeds Liverpool. When I do I am gonna check out the Calypso! Hope I see you on the cut my friend. Mike
Hi Mike great to hear from you and yes rubbish in the canal is a problem... definitely check out the Calypso, as well as the moorings they were fantastic
So many memories when you were sailing through Church, my old home town and lived next to the canal, Rubber Dinghy with an outboard, we had hours of fun during school holidays. Thanks for this.
Just started watching in order. Some shit-holes! But loved the bird! To the left is my Cooper. My daughter bought him for me just before the first lock-down here in Colorado.
Ha ha yeah sorry George I was probably too busy snoring my way across it! I hate the straight parts as it seems to take forever! Amazing views though, and like the rest of the canals, an amazing feat of engineering
Great film Rob. I was the boater you passed as you came out of the tunnel in Burnley. I was moving my boat after leaving it in Burnley for a couple of weeks. When i returned to it some scaly had tried to break in the front , tried taking the front scratch off and setting my tip box on fire !! I have struggled to get good footage on that section of canal with my go pro due to bad weather each time i have cruised it. I was going to film it the day we passed but was really fed up with the damage. Now we know we are both filming it would be funny to pass like they did in naked gun 33 & 1/3 ........I loved you in wall street !!!!
Ha ha ha yes I love those films - or was it Hot Shots part deux? Can't remember. So glad you liked the video, and for expanding on the story as it is always hard to hear with my lister thudding away. See you next time for that double cameo!!
Burnley is a great place generally for boaters i have stayed over there loads of times and have never had any problem. I will stay there again in the cute but only when i am on the boat. The mooring where you stayed at the bottom of the locks are good but the view from the moorings above the locks are better.
Cheers Greg, great advice, I think that should help visitors feel a bit more comfortable at least. Shame I had to keep going but needed to get to the North East train line of course... more on that in the next vid though.
Blackburn is a fine town with plenty of improvements going on. It is the birth place of Alfred Wainwright who mapped many paths in the Lake District and wrote several books on the subject. I am not from Blackburn but live on the outskirts not far from Church. So Leeds Liverpool canal means a lot to me. Glad you made this vlog, a grand adventure robbie. Great music.
hi Robbie, your vids just keep getting better and better, looking forward to seeing how you get on with the Gopro, I got my hero4 last Friday, so easy even a 12 year old can set it up, so got the grandson round to do it for me, keep the vids coming, a little donation on the way.
Hey Nilo, no thank you for watching and supporting - California sounds beautiful, I am aiming to visit you guys one day, soon as you get those canals built 8^D
The Brick Work along the canal is just great , they need to put a Scenic path tour from a canal mooring ,, pointing this way to food and shops and the Queen Street Mill for a bit of history , really like the 2 big lanterns at the 10:40 time marker ,, that's the enterance to a Inn that is
Great vid Robbie. Beautiful country you captured. Do you ever have time to explore some of the trails in the areas you travel through? (Hamilton, Ontario).
Thank you! I do like exploring and going for a hike (see intro to vlog 8) but I do spend most of my time moving the boat as I want to see it all before I have to (heaven forbid) settle down!
I wouldn't stop in Burnley either and I'm from there :D Surprised you didn't mention about the straight mile though and the enormous embankment that facilitates it. One of the most celebrated engineering achievements of the entire canal. Next time :-)
Love Skipton -never been to Blackburn/ Burnley -Neil Arthur ftom on of my favorite bands Blancmange comes from ! - followed them since 1980s ! Hahaha, thanks mat, it would have been more, but I spent a bit to much money in the pub the other day! And great vlog too. Have you ever had some seriously freakish moments when you've been moored up in less desirable places?
Thanks man. You know in ep 8 I mention just seeing some 'wrong uns' when I reached Blackburn. Basically 2 crackhead looking guys were chasing 2 others, except they weren't running, they were kind of hobbling along, 50 yards between them and just shouting after each other!? That was pretty freaky! The cockatiel/Calypso night was the most surreal night though. Crazy
On leaving the Gannow tunnel you pass the so called weavers triangle and Slater terrace. All worth a look if you like to see our industrial heritage. Next is the embankment where you are high above Burnley town centre. Did you spot the Bank Hall arm which served the colliery for many years. Barrowford locks bring you to the summit pool of the L L canal. Beautiful walks around here. The gates you opened with your boat I helped to fit about 40 yrs ago. Made the footbridge as well. Views from the off side of the canal are towards pendle hill
I was about to write the same - Weavers' Triangle and Queen Street Mill definitely worth a visit. The Burnley Embankment is one of the wonders of the waterways, and didn't even get a mention!
you were lucky on that flight after nelson up to the summit where the spilway pushed you over. when we did it the bottom two pounds were empty and we had to let some down all the way up the flight.
Next is Leeds Rob, Good look sir, I had my narrow moored in Leeds. moved it, Its now down in derby. just saying. Good Vlog sir, see ya in my home town soon.
Cheers Adrian! Yeah really looking forward to Leeds, think that is a few days away at the moment though - at least two more vlogs to go before then 8^o
Thanks for the log entry, but -Gees!! Those long tunnels are scary. What if some Creepy Crawley jumps on the boat? and what do you do if the engine decides to quit half way through. Wait till someone comes along and pushes or pulls you out, I guess. Cheep fairs for you guys to the Sanford/Orlando airport. (not the same of the Orlando) airport. Just saying
Tunnels are scary but I have my trusty barge pole to get me put of any fix! Although I can't pretend I'd remain calm if I did break down in the middle!! Florida... man, I don't know John, would take a lot of sponsorship money to afford the flight!! From my end it is £450 from Leeds Bradford airport to Sanford, which I guess if I plan ahead maybe next winter it'll be cheaper... I will do it one day for sure!
Wonderful video Rob, looked lonely on the canal, I expect this is due to the time of year or do you think the north puts boaters off cruising these areas for reasons of safety/security and 'wrong uns'
Hi David, both sounds right. The winter stoppages also put people off as some locks etc are shut down for a month or so while they make essential repairs
Love re watching these that bird is brillaint its funny I remember watching your videos sitting on my sports boat saying how do you cope with the loud engine now im sitting on my narrowboat with the same engine all bs it i have a extra cylinder but just as noisey lol 🤣
Wow that's a lot of water down that side wash no wonder the l&l is always running out of bloody water. There are worse places than Burnley, none spring immediately to mind but I'm sure there are. All in lancashire I reckon.😁😁😁
I understand your fear factor about Burnley as with a lot of northern towns industry has gone and things are bad, it's a shame you couldn't stop in Burnley because Burnley had the last working cotton mill it's now a museum en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queen_Street_Mill if you've seen the Kings speech you've seen the mill
I thought your pain Robbie I can imagine you were a wee bit scared but you got through great or else we won't have a channel to watch would we nice video I'm just glad to be through Burnley
Your are right about not knowing who you are, you just seem to have been on here forever (which is a good thing). Just realized, HAPPY BIRTHDAY to this vid lol
Hi Robbie did you know where you just set off from was designed to look like a railway station and its where the passenger boats would set off from back in the canal hey day
You could film in the rain with a Gopro and have no worries about it getting wet. Or just mount it on the front of your boat to show views forward and mix them with your normal shots in your videos. Just a couple ideas there. Only downside, I have been told the recorded audio on them isn't great when in it's waterproof housing. You can also get kits of accesories in one package on Amazon for them. :-)
Yep that's the plan! Got the camera now obviously but just trying to find a micro sd card and charger and accs pack... not easy in the middle of rural Yorkshire!
Robson, just FYI there are more nights out than: 1. Sitting in a corner eating some food; and 2. Listening to crazy music with a parrot on your shoulder. Also I've had a bright red two seater sofa stolen. Any leads on its whereabouts would be welcome.
What the actual fudging heck do you want from me Mark HUH?? Do you want the moon on a stick? Do you want strictly come dancing? Extreme bondage shows? Because I don't know if you saw the title of this video but this...is Blackburn. Not Bristol. AHAaaaa
I have often thought that canal boats would benefit from a nice LED light Bar. not for every day use, but if there was a night one was required it was during this vlog!
@@RobbieCumming Surely it could just be wired in to the headlight on the front of most narrow boats, thereby operated by the switch at the helm. They are LED and so do not draw much power but would provide a heck of a lot more light out front!
*warning, oblique boaty/pop culture reference from the 70s incoming* Aye, Calypso! Jacques-Yves Cousteau and John Denver would've been proud of you -- looked like a brilliant night out. And what a beautiful part of the country, even with the floating sofa cushions. Fun times as usual Robbie -- thank you for sharing your "strange life" with us -- why not indeed eh :D
Technically you can if the water is at equilibrium but not a good idea as you’re rubbing the bottom parts of the gate which in time form leakages that ironically make the lock passage harder and more time consuming
#1 I'd be surprised if you had used the magnet more, after you found what you where looking for int the canal. :) #2 How come non (as far as I've seen) of you boaters have light alongside your boat when passing a tunnel? You light up inside to get light outside. Isn't that a little bit odd?
In tunnels we use the tunnel light at the front/pointy bit/bow, we also turn on all interior lights to improve visibility at the sides and shut the aft/blunt end/stern door to reduce glare and give the helmsman/steerist/wielder of the colliding spoon/me usually the best chance of seeing where they are trying to go. At the end of the day, you ain't going to get lost, just scratch the paint, I hope the tunnels still have enough strength to survive a boat brushing along them.

I'm so sorry Burnley is as you said a shit hole... I was born in Burnley and spent many happy hours walking and playing along the canal bank. Itys so sad that its turned out like this...But thanks for the tour Robbie I really enjoyed it. I'm n ow living in South Africa...I've been here since 1975...
Great video Sir. Can I ask what book you use? I see you looking at a map book often Also, is there a law regarding times you are allowed to start the boats engines? Earliest and latest times . Thanks
Thanks! I don’t think there is a law but if trying not to be anti-social it’s 8-8. But even that’s only for running engines for power really in built up areas. Book is Collins/Nicholson Waterways guide 8^)
I know its going back a while, but just in case you see this, I believe that if you do not have nav lights you are not supposed to travel during the hours of darkness, insurance wouldn't be valid either. If you have nav lights fitted I suppose you could boat for 24 hours a day, unless there are other rules I am not aware of.
@@RobbieCumming Thanks Robbie, I did, interesting, I didn't know there about the exception for narrowboats on canals. Just proves, you're never too fat to learn! As someone who only gets to play with hire boats we aren't allowed to move in darkness and my exploits in square riggers and yachts are definitely not applicable to canals!
I should think that foulridge tunnel was among the best names for any tunnel -- foul. Ick. Now as to your ruminations about what a strange life, I can say that your life is, indeed, strange. By definition 2. a : not before known, heard, or seen : unfamiliar and b : exciting wonder or awe : extraordinary. Your life is strange.
It's great that you are non pc! If you don't like a town or a pub, you say it. Who does that anymore, not many and they should . (Will forward my law practice number presently ).
It’s actually the other way around! Because of the boat I am forced to take time off!! Which means I’m poor but certainly not bored. 3 days a week I have to work as a PR for garden products -the Liverpool video has a bit more info. 8^)
Do you still need a charger? I have a spare but I am in the US. I could just paypal you so you may purchase one yourself? :) let me know what's best buddy. Cheers From Maryland, USA.
Hi aLfPlaysGames yes I never got round to buying one, but will have to this winter. Don't worry about sending anythin, would cost you too much - just send a donation if you'd like to (and I can add your name to the voyage log book) 8^)
Im from East Lancashire and I'm ott sure what you think Lancashire is like, but it's not The Wild West. Yes, Blackburn and Burnley have seen better days but you can blame successive govts for destroying manufacturing and subsequent recessions fir running towns like those down. The people of these towns are no different from anywhere else, in fact far friendlier than your southerners who turn their nose up at anywhere North of Watford. 😆
i like you and your channel and think you mean well, but is barging a lock gate open a respectful thing to do? or is that quite a normal thing for canal people? just feel like if everyone who watched this started doing that... might kinda make things harder for everyone in the long term.
Thanks - it’s funny if you ask traditional working boats or even boatmen and women of the past they would think nothing of that sort of thing. Personally I barge it open with respect for the craftsmanship, never with malicious intent I hope that at least comes across in my videos. I do take care elsewhere such as with picking up litter, cutting back vegetation and oiling lock paddles. Seems too much like virtue signalling so I don’t usually film those moments. Maybe I should.
This is one of the most fun channels on TH-cam!
Thanks Arthur great to hear!!

Hi Robbie did you know where you just set off from was designed to look like a railway station and its where the passenger boats would set off from back in the canal hey day
Hi cool thanks for letting me know! 8^)
Next time you pass through Burnley you might like to visit the Weavers Triangle Museum.
Panning past the boat moored up by the calypso early on it looked like ghostly figures at the back of the boat? Anyone notice?
Loved your bird friend .
Sadly no longer with us RIP Leo
You could film in the rain with a Gopro and have no worries about it getting wet. Or just mount it on the front of your boat to show views forward and mix them with your normal shots in your videos. Just a couple ideas there. Only downside, I have been told the recorded audio on them isn't great when in it's waterproof housing. You can also get kits of accesories in one package on Amazon for them. :-)
Yep that's the plan! Got the camera now obviously but just trying to find a micro sd card and charger and accs pack... not easy in the middle of rural Yorkshire!
I can imagine, LOL.
Robson, just FYI there are more nights out than:
1. Sitting in a corner eating some food; and
AHAaaaa
They should've made it a smiley face at the end of the tunnel 😁
I know right!!!
like your blog. From Duluth Ga. USA
Hey Norman thanks for letting me know! 8^)
I have often thought that canal boats would benefit from a nice LED light Bar. not for every day use, but if there was a night one was required it was during this vlog!
Yeah! Not sure how that would work but would look pretty cool!
Thank you Stephen! All I can say is that your comment this week is anything but mundane, loving your work!
I see what you did there ;D Cheers Robbie.
Why do you think you can push open the lock doors with the boat? Please explain.
Technically you can if the water is at equilibrium but not a good idea as you’re rubbing the bottom parts of the gate which in time form leakages that ironically make the lock passage harder and more time consuming
Some great scenery and video quality ....... But that 'thumping' engine??? AARRGGHH!! ;-)
Thanks for letting me know Peter, it's funny, some hate it, some can't get enough of it (myself included of course!)
The parrot!!!! :D
Ever coming to the trent
Blackburn Rovers fan here and love this :)
Ha ha excellent!!
Did you manage to see the museum at burnley
No but I will ve back one day for sure
#1 I'd be surprised if you had used the magnet more, after you found what you where looking for int the canal. :)
#2 How come non (as far as I've seen) of you boaters have light alongside your boat when passing a tunnel? You light up inside to get light outside. Isn't that a little bit odd?
In tunnels we use the tunnel light at the front/pointy bit/bow, we also turn on all interior lights to improve visibility at the sides and shut the aft/blunt end/stern door to reduce glare and give the helmsman/steerist/wielder of the colliding spoon/me usually the best chance of seeing where they are trying to go. At the end of the day, you ain't going to get lost, just scratch the paint, I hope the tunnels still have enough strength to survive a boat brushing along them.
Great videos, what is the track playing as you enter Burnley around 11.20 please?
Thanks Richard - it’s called ‘Regal Junction’ and is available to stream on various services or buy here: Choons, Vol. 1 by Robbie Cumming music.apple.com/gb/album/choons-vol-1/1475038346
Which corner?
Hi fantastic love the video
Glad you enjoyed it mranschutz!
VICTORY V COUGH LOZENGES
What happened to the CRT?
When you leave your boat to go to work for a few days do you put it in a marina?
No actually most of the time I leave it next to other boats or out in middle of nowhere!
Great video Sir. Can I ask what book you use? I see you looking at a map book often
Also, is there a law regarding times you are allowed to start the boats engines? Earliest and latest times . Thanks
Thanks! I don’t think there is a law but if trying not to be anti-social it’s 8-8. But even that’s only for running engines for power really in built up areas.
Book is Collins/Nicholson Waterways guide 8^)
@@RobbieCumming Thanks for the answers. Even though I don't own a boat, I may purchase that book. Good luck on your travels .
Might want to research that one!
By definition 2. a : not before known, heard, or seen : unfamiliar and
b : exciting wonder or awe : extraordinary. Your life is strange.
Well then at least some of what I say is correct! Thank you ncplantdoctor! 8^)
why was the bridge closed with the traffic lights?
That was a mile long tunnel and to stop boats getting in the way of each other they time it so both sides get 30mins to get through
cheers m8, was just wondering.
Enjoyed the vid :)
Cheers Ade good to hear from you man!
hahah fun adventure
:D
Do you ever sing in the tunnel.
Maybe.... 😂
It's great that you are non pc! If you don't like a town or a pub, you say it. Who does that anymore, not many and they should . (Will forward my law practice number presently ).
Yeah it does get me in trouble sometimes so yes please will need that number 😂👍
Music at 17 mins ?
Another enjoyable video Robbie. You know the Irish have a saying "A gentleman is someone who knows how to play the piano accordion but doesn't"
Thank you! Love that, I will let John know next time I see him ;)
What is it you actually do for a job that allows you to spend so much time on the boat?
It’s actually the other way around! Because of the boat I am forced to take time off!! Which means I’m poor but certainly not bored. 3 days a week I have to work as a PR for garden products -the Liverpool video has a bit more info. 8^)
i missed this somehow ... arrrgh....
Ha-Ha .... don't worry, it's probably my age. When I was younger I'd have been Head-Banging to to the beat ;-)
Awesome! It certainly has rhythm! I will sometimes hum along to the drone when bored/cabin fevered
Whoops take that back lol
Do you still need a charger? I have a spare but I am in the US. I could just paypal you so you may purchase one yourself? :) let me know what's best buddy. Cheers From Maryland, USA.
Hi aLfPlaysGames yes I never got round to buying one, but will have to this winter. Don't worry about sending anythin, would cost you too much - just send a donation if you'd like to (and I can add your name to the voyage log book) 8^)
You should wear gloves when you do that propellor thing. If you get scratched and infected...
Great point thanks!
😁👍👏👏👏
