Once the culprit was found, half of our belongings were returned to us...but my copy of Donkey Kong was never found. To the punk who stole my copy of Donkey Kong, if you're out there...I WANT MY GAME BACK!!
I am so greatful and lucky for my parents to have got this game for me back in 96/97, what an epic introduction to video games! This is probably my most favorite game of all time, and it's not just nostalgia! the games praised as one of the best! I never thought much about it but I'm 26 now and I still have the original gb cart of this game that I got back then, it was the ONE and only gameboy related material I held onto as the years went by, I finally realize how special it truly is and why I decided to hold onto it now
I really appreciate that you actually film the Gameboy and not just screencapture an emulator. It has a much more authentic vibe this way. Oh, and the pace and timing in all of your reviews is just pure masterclass. I really enjoy them.
I traded this in during the late 90s but got it back in 2002. By far one of the best Mario games and one of the few video games to actually deliver on the promise of 100 levels.
I still have the system and game, and I have to tell you, even though I beat it, I loved how you could do a million more things than in the arcade edition. I mean, you can do flips, walk on your hands, and you have to solve puzzles. This game is truly amazing, and I will never get bored of it.
I had this game when I was a teenager, it's just great. It's still as interesting and fun as it was before, really a timeless classic. The kind of game you can pick up anytime and have a good time with.
This was the second game I ever owned for my gameboy. I was 7, at the time and donkey kong was my favorite arcade game. When I beat the first 4 stages, i thought i beat the whole game.. so having the game open up into an adventure mode BLEW MY MINDDDD. Probably my biggest surprise ever as a gamer.
Same lol, I could never work out how to do the last level of the first stages... then one day I beat it and got to the big city, but deleted the save file! I spent months trying to work out how to get there again!
The very first game where mario can do backflips! Definitely one of the best GB games ever! Did you know you can press down + jump to walk on your hands and repel falling objects with your feet?

+Chelly Touy you can...but you are best off playing it on the Super Game Boy on SNES as that is what this game was optimised for. The Super Game Boy costs a fraction of what a gba sp costs as well....particularly the back lit model.
+Lord Maximus that's assuming someone has a SNES to begin with, which is way more costly on its own. Plus the person who I replied to asked if it is on the GBA SP, not if the GBA SP is the best way to play the game. Therefore making your point kind of invalid.

Recently, I played this game for the first time since the 90s, and was shocked to discover that I'd been humming many of the game's tracks over the years. I'd forgotten they were from this game, but they stuck with me all this time.
I have been subbed to you for some time now and although i do more often enjoy your retreviews of beloved games form the era where thier creators cared for the end result that have been lost in the plethura comercially driven, reguritated, time stealers that plague the gamers landscape *cough* Onechanbara *cough*. just found my old copy and am playing it on my GBA right now. It still has all the saves from my childhood days, its amazing. Even now as an adult I can still appreciate this game more than most in my modern library. Not to mention as a kid I took tremendous care of my boxes. So now its also a great mint showpiece on top of a great game to play.

Thank you for recognizing and reviewing this game, it has to be up there as one of my favourite games. Possibly No.1. It's incredible. I can now complete it no problem, but I remember spending ages on the final boss. I could write scores more on this game, but Mark has already said most of what I have to say, so If you have the means get it.
oh my goodness!! I'm having flashbacks right now :D what a game -- as you say the strategy was amazing and so many neat touches like the fruit machine and bigger jumps out of handstands --- WHOOOOOOOO! bought a game boy again recently so will have to track this down. Make me chuckle that you needed to be in really good light to even see the screen on the game boy!! happy memories

The memories. It's a great game, perfect platforming, puzzles and you need to be quick. It's one of the few games I felt a real achievement in completing. The final battle is tough. Damn, I want it again.
Funny story with me & this game. My dad got it for me because he was a HUGE fan of the arcade Donkey Kong game and told me that was why he got it for me. I was kinda disappointed at the time because I played the arcade version and thought the GB game would just be the same 4 levels over and over. After I got through the 4th level and the game kept going, I was in shock. Turned out my dad got me this game thinking it was something else but it turned out to be something so much better. Thanks Dad.
Yeah, I just got the game last month, and it is easily one of my favorite Gameboy games ever. It's also my favorite version of Donkey Kong. A couple tips for you Mark. Pressing down then A will cause Mario to do a handstand, which can be used to deflect falling objects when Donkey Kong jumps. While in that handstand, you can also do a high jump by pressing A. Another type of jump you can do is a backflip, by simply pressing back and A while running forward.
OMG NOW I REMEMBER THIS GAME! THE MUSIC! THE GRAPHICS! WOW! I've played this SO MUCH with a friend back in 2002 when we were seven! If he couldn't finish the level then I could, and that was how we finished this SUPERDUPERAWESOME game!

I just aquired and completed this game recently. It's a lot of fun. I was one of those jokers that sold the game back in the day and just had to get it again. I strongly suggest trying this game out as well.
I have had a lot of fun playing this game. The variety of challenging levels, thinking of how to get from A to B, I've savoured every little bit. I especially love the final board and the final boss and ending. It's well worth finishing the game.

I remember this game. A remake from the 4 original arcade levels, but then it warps into something so twisted and unique that it becomes what Donkey Kong would have been if there were battery saves during the arcade days. Plus those death scenes where Mario gets burned are funny. When I originally played this game on Gameboy, I never knew anything of the arcade classic and my first reaction was... "Why can't I jump and kill those enamies?" ah, the joys and painful memories.
I'm not sure why exactly, but I really love this review. I've watched it at least five times now. I guess it's because this is such a unique and fun game and I'm glad to hear Mark have such positive things to say about it.
Thank god I still have my Game Boy Color, GB Advance, and my Donkey Kong cart which I picked up back in 2003 for $4.99 used at GameStop. Lord Rampage - GREAT review although you forgot to mention that you can change the color palette if you have a GB color or Advance. Push right & up on the d-pad - holding the A button while turning it on. Another thing PERFECT about this game is how the difficulty gradually ramps up. You don't have any insanely HARD levels until world 6.
i bought this back in 94 with the supergameboy because it had custom borders. definitely worth it. replayed it yesterday on emulator. wish it had a sequel

This is one of my favorite video games of all-time. I posted one of my videos as a video response. It shows how improved this game was for the Super Gameboy. There's lots of colours, the SGB border is based on the arcade game, and it uses actual recorded voice when Pauline yells "HELP". Spoiler alert though, my video response shows the last four levels, final boss and ending.

I played this in '96. A few years later, I traded in my Game Boy but in '02 I got a GBA and I picked this up. Fell in love all over again. Haven't played this in almost 10 years and I think I'll get around to it after I finish super Mario 64. (I got Mario Fever ATM)
Donkey Kong '94 (as its often referred to as) is one of my all time favorite games. It's super addictive (like Angry Birds), and some of the puzzles are extremely head-scratching. I absolutely, HIGHLY recommend this game. You'll be happy you got it if you like puzzles. PROTIP: The handstand will deflect falling debris when they land on your feet (like in the DK boss stage). Learning the moves demo'd in the beginning is CRUCIAL.

epic game. also worth noting this was one of if not the very first game to use color on the original gameboy. i remember playing through this way back. there really are a hundred or more levels and they get tough : )
Yeah.. I had the same experience with this game. I had a Donkey Kong arcade cabinet growing up. How my Dad afforded it in the 80s I have no idea.. but I wanted this for gameboy. For some reason, I always wanted games I always had on other consoles. I had no idea about the extra levels. I was seriously surprised when I beat the Concrete Factory (or "Pie factory" as I called it as a kid..) and there were more levels.. One of the hidden gems of game history.
I just picked this up last week. I love it! I didn't know it was so much more than a port of the original with boosted jump and throw mechanics. A must-have especial if you play on GBA.

The spiritual follow up to this game on GBA, Mario vs Donkey Kong is just as good as this game. This game was an absolute gem for Game Boy. Now I have it on my 3DS :)

This game is such an underrated classic. It's probably one of my all time favorite Gameboy games, along with Super Mario Land and Pokemon Yellow.

great job as usual this game reminds me of the mario vs dk series
I just picked this up last week. I love it! I didn't know it was so much more than a port of the original with boosted jump and throw mechanics. A must-have especial if you play on GBA.

omg i love you i remember this game from when i was a little kid used to be my favorite game of all time i lost it on vacation and never really knew the name of it ;-;
I like how games like this are in HD quality and games like Resistence we bare get in HQ.

The spiritual follow up to this game on GBA, Mario vs Donkey Kong is just as good as this game. This game was an absolute gem for Game Boy. Now I have it on my 3DS :)

I own an unused Gameboy Play it Loud in yellow with four games and case. Sure would love to play it!!
Have this on my old school game boy also got this from club nintendo last year. Well worth any amount of money. One of the best handheld games ever!

This was such a amazing and amazingly under rated game! Like wow i use too play this none stop back in the day i loved it!
I had this for my gameboy advance for my SNES, which I still have!! This was a great game. Mario can do some awesome jumps

god i rember when this game first came out it was the game i was addicted to and i still love it. i still rember there was one level i could never get past then a friend beat it for me and i could do the rest of the game from there lol
