    DK '94 is probably the the most underappreciated Mario game, my only main problem is that it goes on for a bit too long, but I don't really care because the game is so fun!
    The GBA Mario vs. DK is also a really good spiritual successor to this game too and introducing the Mini-Marios, but it's a shame that the rest of the games focused on the Mini-Marios too much.

    • @robbiewalker2831
      @robbiewalker2831 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @Joel Johnson The game is also the introduction of Modern DK. Donkey Kong Country was in development; so while originally the non-tie wearing DK, aka Cranky, was going to be in the Gameboy game, they scrapped it (along with Lady's design) and bring in new designs to help promote DKC.

      imo Mario VS donkey Kong games really drift off and the shine from the original was truly lost, it just became a lemmings game and it wasn't fun, i don't even play them and never will have any interest, the gba game wasn't so bad though but the original Gameboy cannot be topped with how well it aged like fine wine so well over the years 🥰🥰

    • @robbiewalker2831
      @robbiewalker2831 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@aidanh7527 10 years, actually. Funny enough DKC was released on the same year as this Game Boy game, which is released 10 years prior to Mario vs. Donkey Kong. And given the instruction manual to MvsDK says “Looks like Donkey Kong is up to his old tricks again”, I’m pretty sure the game is insinuating that this Modern necktie wearing DK is meant to be the same as the necktie wearing DK on the Game Boy games (including the Game and Watch Gallery series, which, funny enough, had the Modern DK on the title screen for Gallery 4, despite the Modern variants of Donkey Kong, Jr, and 3, having the classic look). Now, I’m not gonna deny that Cranky is possibly the OG DK from the Arcade game, but his game development bias towards modern game design could imply that he’s not the same Kong as the Game Boy one, giving his many rants in Donkey Kong Country, which breaks the fourth wall a lot. Arcade DK had 11 sprites for animation, whereas the Game Boy counterpart has 8x the amount, and Cranky has complained about how putting effort in presentation doesn’t make good gameplay. Not to mention, Cranky also brought up game loops, which the Game Boy re-imagining doesn’t go for.

Once you understand the platforming controls, it's one of the most fun and satisfying things, backflips, multi-jumps, and handstand flips feel so good to nail. This game alone is the reason why Nintendo needs to give us Gameboy on the online subscription service.

  • @setteplays

    It's worth noting that this Mario is not Super (at least until Pauline gives him some juice at the end to hold up DK).
    That's why he dies in one hit and can even take fall damage. And he doesn't break any bricks either.
    Mario is kinda always Super nowadays, so that continuity makes me pretty happy it exists.
    And that's a huge coincidence, I beat this game last weekend and now this video. Amazing work!

    • @retrofan4963
      @retrofan4963 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Good observation. That's why in continuity, it makes sense that the DK Arcade series and Donkey Kong(GameBoy) takes place before Super Mario Bros series. Mario isn't completely powerful yet, Pauline was Mario's OG girlfriend before Peach, Donkey Kong and Mario were strong rivals, and it seemed Mario didn't know much about the Mushroom Kingdom until he discovers the pipe at the end of Donkey Kong 94 and when Mario and Pauline found out the Super Mushroom. I love how they put continuity details like that.

    GB Donkey Kong was my first Game Boy game. I got it for Christmas with a Game Boy and loved it ever since. Definitely one I like to revisit, and that last world is just too much fun.

    This is one of my favorite games of all time, IT STILL HOLDS UP TODAY, the music is amazing some of the best the gb has to offer, the controls are tight, the puzzles are cool and satisfying, the sound effects, all of marios moves and the gameplay is perfect, its all so good!
    This game kind of reminds me of Toads Treasure Tracker because both games are just compact mini stages where you have to do some platforming and solve the puzzles
    I feel Nintendo did the right move with calling the sequel (which wasn't as good) "Mario VS. Donkey Kong" I bet if they called this one that instead of just "Donkey Kong" it would have been way more known

    Got this Christmas 1995 when I was 8. After clearing the arcade part I thought I had beaten the game. Took me MONTHS to beat the whole thing. This game really taught me to "think outside of the box" in terms of getting that key to the door each time - like dumping the key onto a conveyer belt that Mario can't fit through and then retrieving it on the other side before it vanishes back to it's original spot.

  • @Sly88Frye

    This game is definitely quite incredible! I've always loved this game and I'm so happy to see you review this in such a positive light. people don't really talk about this game anymore and I really wish they'd make more of these games and even make something really cool maybe as a 30th anniversary for the original donkey Kong arcade being released in 1981 how about next year in 2021 they released a new donkey Kong game with puzzle levels like this and you could actually create your own custom levels?
    I mean in Mario versus donkey Kong 2 March of the minis you actually do get to make your own levels but the different playstyle because you're controlling multiple minis. It's a lot of fun sure, but I'd love to see it done for games that are like the 1994 donkey Kong game boy.

    You know, I might have a series of Gameboy games you'll be interested in: The Game & Watch Gallery games. These games feature a bunch of Game & Watch games to play all at your leisure, but with a few twists: You can select between Classic or Modern versions for each game; the former having the exact same visuals and sound as the LCD original, while the latter gives it more flair with extra animation and making it more "Mario" in presentation. While I never played most of this series myself, I have played the 4th game on GBA when I first got mine at the age of 4 (oh how time flies...) and I had a lot of fun! You can collect Stars by playing really well in both versions of all the games featured in every collection to unlock more extras such as new games and such! Heck, I remember wasting my free time away by watching those bite-size sprite animations in G&W Gallery 4 where you got to see things like a Big Boo play bowling with Waluigi pins for example! Also, its soundtrack was surprisingly pleasant to listen to; whether it was the Modern Games' songs, or that incredibly relaxing Museum theme, there was quite a bit to enjoy both gameplay wise and presentation wise! And while there was a Game & Watch Collection for the DS, it was only available for Club Nintendo Members in 2008 (rest in spaghetti, never forghetti) and doesn't have nearly the same charm in its presentation when compared to the GB/GBA titles. I guess if you wanna compare, it's like going from Sonic Mega Collection on GameCube to Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection on PS3/XBox 360, sure you get more games to play, but some of that childhood magic gets lost in the transition, you know?

    This game was super hard for me as a kid, I never got past the forest level where you had to manipulate enemies. (I believe it was even the level shown off at 03:18 in this video.)
    I never knew there were so many worlds and levels I haven't seen until I saw the save file of a friend's copy, who had beaten the game by that point.
    Sadly, my own copy got super bugged so I can't really play it anymore.

    This game was my childhood. The last stage in particular was my favorite, just for the final boss alone. What annoyed me is that you always had to complete the previous stages in order to fight him again. 9-2 used to give me so much trouble because I mostly overshot the swing and got killed by Donkey Kong.

    This game got tons of mileage out of it as a kid, I took it everywhere, was determined to beat it. My friend used to bug me to play it too so I set him up with his own save file and we'd fire up the Super Gameboy so I can watch him play. 100 levels felt like a long trek as a kid.

      I'm not surprised. Super Mario Odyssey heavily reference the Donkey Kong Arcade games and Donkey Kong 94(GameBoy) a lot, which is interesting because for once in the main Mario series, Nintendo all of a sudden remembers "Oh yeah, Mario's real first game is Donkey Kong". New Donk City isa big reference to the City in Donkey Kong 94, Pauline(Mario's OG girlfriend) is the Mayor of New Donk City, and New Donk City is filled with various Donkey Kong references. And Mario traveling around the world must be a nod to Donkey Kong 94(GameBoy).

    We came very close to getting a GBA remake of this game with a level editor but then it instead morphed into the game Mario vs Donkey Kong (there are some photos of the prototype), which in japan at least became one of the few games with E-reader exclusive levels (though unlike Super Mario Advance 4 the data wasn't included on the card but rather an unlock instruction as the levels were already on the game)
