    Fun fact: In the scene where I choke on water, I actually did (not on purpose). Actually, I suppose that's not a very fun fact and I'd be lying if I said this wasn't the first time I've almost hurt myself filming for these videos. Not to worry though.. I will continue to stay diligent about keeping safe :) Games played: Donkey Kong (0:06 - via Super Game Boy), Mole Mania (0:17 - via Game Boy with backlight mod), Catrap (0:56 - via Game Boy with backlight mod), Tetris (5:32 - via Game Boy with backlight mod), Tetris (6:04 - via GBA SP), Wario Land (6:50 - via unmodded Game Boy Color), Castlevania II (8:06 - via Game Boy with backlight mod), Link's Awakening (10:17 - via GBA with backlight mod), Super Mario Land 2 (11:15 - via Game Boy with backlight mod)

    "Yoshi" on the Game Boy has always been one of my favorite puzzle games. There's something magical about making an egg from a column and seeing a Yoshi come out every time.

    • @riversart2030
      @riversart2030 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ya, Yoshi is underrated. Never played the Gameboy version but the NES version is very nostalgic for me. It's not the kind of game you play for hours but it is very satisfying in short bursts.

    Sometimes I feel the original Gameboy doesn't get enough love. Yes, the Gameboy Color is better but I can't help it but admire the original Gameboy. Its large and robust frame, the clean light gray look, the speaker is louder than the Color's and the presedent it set in the industry alongside giving birth to one of the biggest juggernaut in gaming history (Pokémon) I think the gray brick deserve some love from time to time.

      Honestly, they're a lot better than you'd probably think. They suffer a bit now that battery life is largely a solved problem, but back in the day they were an amazing option due to the massive amount of gameplay that you could get out of AA batteries.

    • @ahums16
      @ahums16 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For me it shows what the NES could have been ~ the sound font sounds so much better, more 'musical', and game design at this point was more solidified, developers had the foundations for ideas of what to go for already laid. Designed for fun on the go, key word being 'fun', a difficult game on the GameBoy is typically nowhere near as unforgiving as a NES title, exceptions apply of course.
      You also had wonderful experiments you really don't see anymore, look no further than Qix by Taito for an interesting new take on what puzzles can be.
      I've never cared for puzzle games, but now at 26, honestly the GameBoy ones I'm falling for.

But thanks to this guy and after actually playing some of these games I realized I might prefer it to the NES actually, there were a lot of lighthearted simple fun games on the Gameboy, and like you said they aren't nearly as punishing as the NES.

    Love The Game Boy and what I love about this game was the 1st wave was done to make little kids do great on them! One of the main reasons why people do not like Castlevania The Adventure as it was easy to go far, not hard like the non-portable Castlevania Games out there. Also loved the original Super Mario Land as it was like the original one in that you could only go one direction & no going back. You don't get lost in any level you know where to go at all times, which made for total fun! The games on the Game Boy were there to be played and loved by everyone that is why it will always be close to my heart! Still play these two games each year and it still entertains me to this day.

  • @NotSoRetro
    @NotSoRetro 2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

    Wario Land 2 gets my vote. Multiple paths through levels and you can't really die, so it's good for kids. For years I couldn't figure out how I'd gotten to a certain path in the game, because while I was playing my mom called me and when I looked at the gameboy again, there I was. Years later I found out that if you do nothing in the beginning and Wario stays asleep for a few seconds, and you don't press a button, you find a secret "exit" to the stage, where he slept through the whole thing.

    Donkey Kong... best game on the system. First time I played it, I just assumed it was a straight port of the arcade game... when the game continued and became a completely new game, I was blown away. Rarely have I had a "surprise" moment like that in a video game that stuck with me forever.

    I am still fascinated how fantastic graphics on the Gameboy look. I mean, they had a limited colour palette and keeping back in mind that the GameGear had more during that time, it is just mind blowing what the developers have reached on the Gameboy.
    My all-time favourite is my very first Gameboy game and that's WWF Superstars. I am a big Ultimate Warrior fan and listening to his entrance music was awesome.
    Other games that I count "all-time favourites" are:
    - TMNT: Fall of the Foot Clan
    - Kirby's Adventure
    - Double Dragon 2
    - Kwirk
    - Mario Land 2
    - Tiny Toon Adventures
    - Probotector (Aka as Contra)
    - Gargoyle's Quest
    What I love about most games, you can finish them in 1 hr. Yes, the Gameboy has a special place in my heart and how amazing it was to "upgrade" that big boy with all the accessories 😂.
    And at least a great "flashback journey" with your vid again. The questions on the end let your vid feel special, and not just consuming. And as much as I love the questions, I love other people responses here. It's like finding new treasures with your recommendations❤️👍.
    Ah, and BTW. of course I would have shared my Gameboy with you😊.

      I've got both, and I've got a GBC on the way. The main issue with the Game Gear is that it took so many batteries, and rechargeable in that era were mostly not very good. The one time I got to borrow one from a friend for a trip, it was great in most other ways, especially the ability to play it in the dark without an external light source.

      I didn't expect it to open up after the first 4 levels. The fact that they added so many levels and worlds to the game made it very replayable.

    I'm old enough that the Game Boy came out while I was a senior in high school. Bought one, along with the rechargeable battery pack, and loved it. Spent much time between classes playing, especially once I started college. Didn't have too many games, though...money was tight. Got married, was broke, and had to sell it. So sad. Today I have a GPi Case and all the games I missed back when I couldn't afford them. And today all my gaming dollars go into the Switch. The GameBoy was one of those cases where I didn't know I wanted one until I got it. It wasn't until my dad got me and my sister a GameBoy Color in the late 90's, and that led me to becoming obsessed with obtaining GameBoy and GameBoy Color games. What a timely and fantastic video! I actually just recently have jumped back into my GameBoy collection to revisit some games in my collection. I think the only game I haven't played in your list was Catrap, but it sounds fun! I love the GameBoy games due to just their simple pick up and play style.
    You've already mentioned most of my favorites, but I'd add a few more like Kirby's Pinball Land, Pokémon (I will admit I prefer the remakes, though), Gargoyle's Quest, Metroid II (again, this one has some archaic design improved by the modern remakes, but still a good game), Adventure Island 1 & 2, and Duck Tales.
    The GameBoy was basically a portable monochrome NES and developers like Nintendo and Capcom knew how to shrink NES games down to port them to the Game Boy!

He was a little obsessed with put labels on everything but it was mostly tools and such. Why he needed to carve into it rather than just use a name label is an answer I never got.

    If I wanted to interest someone in the GameBoy who never saw it before, I’d definitely pick Super Mario Land 2 & 3.

    I never had a Gameboy growing up. I know the OG Gameboy came out in 1989, 9 years before I was born. The Gameboy Light and Gameboy Color came out the year I was born so I was obs too young to play on a Gameboy given that I was a baby. That and the Gameboy Light only came out in Japan just to bring that up. I REALLY wanted a Gameboy as a kid.
    Years later, I got my wish. I have not one but two Gameboys. I have a yellow Gameboy Pocket and a lime green/kiwi Gameboy Color, both of which I had for a year. I got matching wormlights for both of my beloved handhelds. Seeing other people talk about the Gameboy always puts me in such a good mood.
    I have 40 OG Gameboy games and 14, soon to be 16, Gameboy Color games. That makes it a total of 56 games. I'm aiming for 60. I keep my GB and GBC games in a bag and as my collection grows, I upgrade my bags.
    I know I have my Nintendo DS Lite, 2DS and my Switch Lite but the Gameboy is what I was missing as a kid. Of course, I love all of them equally 💞

    Ahhh, the Game Boy. What an important piece of my childhood! I've lost all my Game Boys long ago, but thanks to modern tech and smart people, I can take every fun GB game ever made with me anywhere and have lots of features that would've been super to have back then, like a BACKLIT SCREEN!!! And a night mode color palette, save states, fast-forward, screenshots, etc.
    If I was trying to sell someone on the GB, I would recommend Kirby's Block Ball. Secondary game I'd recommend is QIX. Fun fact: I didn't even grow up with those games. I found them in my late 20s. They're so good. If I was a kid making recommendations, I'd probably pick Battle Arena Toshinden and Kirby's Dream Land 2.
    Thanks for the laughs, RB! Your comedy is gold... like a golden banana from DK. :D

    Kirby had a strong presence on the original Game Boy. And Kirby Star Stacker in particular is a lot of fun. It’s very Tetris-like, but easy to get obsessed, at least in my experience. Oh, also can’t forget Mario’s Picross.

    I'm one of the few who neither had nor wanted a Game Boy back when it was a current system. The small screen limited viewing angles bothered me more than the portability impressed me. It wasn't until probably about 10 years ago I realized what I had been missing.

    The saddest day of my life was in primary school one day when another kid stole my Gameboy pocket out of my coat while we were in class...what made it worse is that it had my copy of Pokemon Blue in that I'd sunk easily hundreds of hours into, playing almost non-stop. I had to wait until December to get another replacement Gameboy with combined Christmas and Birthday money and I got another copy of Blue as a gift. I still at least had my other games, too, that I hadn't taken to school :(

    I know how you feel. I didn't get a Gameboy until I was 11 in 1996, and it was a Gameboy Pocket. Many school bus rides were spent watching friends play their Gameboys or Game Gears (well until the Game Gear ran out of batteries before the field trip destination) in envy. But the Gameboy quickly became one of my favorite systems with Super Mario Land 2 and Pokémon being released 2 years after I got one.

So much time was spent on games like Mario Land 2, Mario Advance 1, Crash Bandicoot the Huge Adventure, Metroid Fusion and the one I love the most, Metroid Zero Mission.

    I recently replayed Pokemon Red. It still holds up. I forgot how much more the OG Pokemon games feel like true RPGs. The sense of adventure is greater with the more impact inventory control has and lack of information given through gameplay. There's limited EXP and money available so choices and battle outcomes matter more.

    One of my favorites has always been Avenging Spirit. It's an action platformer where you play as a ghost that can possess every enemy, all of whom move and attack differently, giving you a lot of gameplay variety. I had it as a kid, got it again a few years back and still enjoy it as much as back then. Unfortunately it is way on the pricey side (pricecharting listing it loose at 149$ right now, which sounds ridiculous to me...), but retro 8bit just had preorders for a limited edition on original hardware (already closed, sadly), so hopefully the price drops a bit. Or, you know, emulation is a thing :)
    Anyway, I'd recommend checking it out.

    Game Boy was my first system and it was such a blast. Think I originally got Tetris, TMNT Fall of the Foot Clan, and Metroid II, and all of them still hold up when I play them today. Though my favorite game on the Game Boy was Battletoads, played that forever until I could do that motorcycle section first time every time. Really liked the Wizards and Warriors game on Game Boy too. Played the hell out of Dr Mario on it too. Thanks for the Cattrap recommendation BTW, that game looks awesome and I have never heard of it. Always pays off subscribing to this channel, especially after you got me turned on to Rocket Knight Adventures.

      I've gotten into collecting consoles lately and I got an original GB with the original color, and I've got a GBC coming. They're a lot of fun, even though I generally dump and play the roms on retropie so I don't have to anger my neck while doing so. For the most part it works out OK, but some of the NES to GBC ports are not pleasant to play due to the screen scrolling that's required to make it work.

    Great video! I think the one thing that could have been explored was the ability to manipulate what the hardware was capable by way of the cartridge. Not just by per MEGS, you could argue that was just a compression decision. By the time the NG died, tech had shrunk to the point you could have practically squeezed the Neo Geo 2 into a cart.
