As a Slovak legionnaire, my grandfather traveled with Ján Žižka's 3rd regiment along the entire Trans-Siberian highway to Vladivostok. His direct commander was lieutenant Ludvik Svoboda, later president of Czechoslovakia elected in 1968. He returned home via Japan, the Pacific Ocean, the Panama Canal and the USA. He enlisted in 1913 and returned home in 1920. In 1968, his wish came true and he personally met his commander and the president during a visit to his hometown. He died a year later. I was left with memories, 7 military decorations and old photos from the places where they anchored on the way home. I am 71 years old and I am glad that even the younger generation appreciates history.

The nearest story that I know in my family is from my grandfather who almost went from Brazil to Italy on WW2, but when his division was travelling by train to take the ship, they unadvised stopped by a warehouse to sleep, just to discover later that the place had some sort of hepatitis contamination, they were sent back due to this and were not sent to battle.

I was pleasantly surprised by the positive reactions of the audience. One negative convinced me to give more information. My grandfather avoided talking about the details of his experiences during the war. I learned something later from my father. As a child, during the holidays, I witnessed the meeting of legion veterans from several cities of Czechoslovakia several times. They also met in his house. Their cohesion until the end of their lives fascinated me incredibly. They called each other "brothers" as if they were really one family. In the middle of the guest room in his house, a large folding locked table dominated, which hid all his memories and whose secret we found out only after his death. It contained memories of his participation in battles in the Austro-Hungarian army, his capture and, after an attempt to escape, the threat of execution. Fortunately, he was saved by recruitment into the Czechoslovak Legion. What followed was the anabasis of defending the Trans-Siberian highway and the struggle to return home. The last chapter was a trip around the world from Vladivostok by sea to home. After the end of the war, he became a criminal detective in the capital of Slovakia. As a detective, he regularly participated in the protection of the first president of the Czechoslovak Republic, Tomáš G. Masaryk, during his visits to Slovakia. In 1937, he participated as a member of the honor guard of veterans of the Czechoslovak Legion at the funeral of President T.G. Masaryk. After the occupation of Czechoslovakia by the fascists, the legionnaires were persecuted and the grandfather was put out of service. After the end of the war in 1945, his situation did not improve, and when the communists came to power in 1948, he ended up as a gamekeeper and vineyard guard with a minimum wage and pension. That was thanks to the republic for most of the legionnaires from the First World War. I found a photo from 1966 where he secretly photographed himself in a legionary uniform, which he kept for years. His eldest son was forced to enlist in World War II on the Italian front. Slovaks, as a satellite ally of Germany, send their army to fight alongside Germany on the eastern and southern fronts. He participated in the battles for the defense of Monte Cassino and was seriously wounded. It is an irony of fate that the grandfather fought on the side of the legionnaires and against Germany, and his son almost died defending fascist Italy. All this will probably be lost in time, but nevertheless this history should not be forgotten.

I come from Poland. I've been writing my magister degree on estabilishing of diplomatic relations between US and CCCP and I decided to write a very wide background, just to trace all reasons behind particular political decisions. I remember that finding out about Czech Legion and their journey eastwards was a shock to me - also because I already had a good knowledge about Soviets, first world war and things that happened later. I bet that this is a thing that is known to very very few people outsice Czech Republic. So, it is cool that this game has happened, it should really boost some knowledge about long gone history of inter-war period in Europe.

Good luck with your magister's diploma! I should add: the Czechoslovak Legion is not forgotten in Russia (and possibly other post-Soviet countries). We learn about it at history lessons in school. It is usually portrayed in a very neutral way, even though Czechoslovaks played sometimes a crucial role in the balance of powers in Siberia and had their clashes with both Reds and Whites. I personally adore the will of these people to continue fighting for their Motherland, even after the front they were on shattered and the country hosting them has surrendered, and to travel for that across the entirety of Russia in difficult and hostile conditions.

Attack of the Czechoslovak legions on Lipjang 🇨🇿
In total, about 4,000 men were gathered at Lipjag within the individual units of the Bolsheviks. They were also very well armed compared to the Czechoslovaks and had enough ammunition and grenades. Their armament was supplemented by 180 machine guns and 13 cannons of various calibers, along with 10 mortars. 2 armored cars and an armored train were also ready for battle. The Bolsheviks built zones of trenches, fortified machine-gun nests and anti-personnel obstacles here for the effective defense of the railway station.
Even with accompanying parts of other units, Lieutenant Čeček had only 1,600 men at his disposal against the enemy's fortified forces, supported by 32 machine guns, 7 cannons and the "Orlík" armored train
In the Battle of Lipjag, 26 Czechoslovaks fell, including the popular commander of the 4th Infantry Regiment, Lieutenant Gayer. Another 86 were injured, including 4 officers. Two men were missing and presumed dead.
Out of a total of 4,000 Bolsheviks, 1,500 fell in the battle, including their commander Kadomtsev and his deputy Oberleutnant Schmidt. Another 300 drowned trying to escape through the swamps. 1,800 Bolsheviks were captured by the Czechoslovaks.

Looked a lot like the old Commandos games, but also with an additional "management" layer.
    Worth. Every. Penny.

As a massive Military History nerd Its always great to see anything you know very little about and even more importantly the game is actually good (I played the Demo). Its such a unique way to do an RTS and I enjoyed the demo, I had a few issues like why don't enemy dead and destroyed vehicles stay visible on the battlefield and it could benefit from some blood to make it more realistic and immersive. You kill someone and a pool of blood is visible or your soldier gets wounded and is bleeding on the ground something like that.

Yes, it was elite in compare to Russians, because everybody was educated (it was duty in Austria)Hungary to have basic knowledge since 18th century), also able to use multiple weapons and machines, legionaires was not just soldiers, but also engineers, teachers and doctors. And most imporantly, when Russian civil war started, all their military structures was crippled and splintered, while Czechoslovak legions was already fully organized military structure independent of Russian politics.
Also, this 70k was not just soldiers, it contained a lot of civilians, and trans-siberian railways have thousands of kilometres - impossible to fully control, except stategicaly important locations.

This is very reminiscent to the "Ground Control 1" by Massive Entertainment(Now part Ubisoft, currently making Far Cry games), and "SWAT 2". In Ground Control 1, you have the similar squad management and customization mechanics, and in SWAT 2 you have the similar cover system and line of sight system. You should check out both "Ground Control 1" and "SWAT 2".

  • @ksotar

At first glance I was inspired by this game in your play out.
The amount of details, various mechanics, interesting and little known historical period, and I'm also fond of trains!
But later on I looked closer and started to see roughness. Team of 5 gathering supplies for the whole train (and carrying them in their pockets I guess?) So-called "artillery strike" being copied from modern games (with what means of communication do they call it, I wonder?). And, most of all, history kicks in.
Hostilities between the Legion and the Reds, including artillery bombardments in Central Russia? Kaluga is a mere village (it is a regional capital, played large role during Napoleon invasion in Russia)? Gen. Morozov wearing some fantasy outfit mix between Wites, Reds and fairy-tales? And of course, all Reds do on their own territory, is kill and pillage. I wonder where that overwhelming people support that eventually led to Reds victory, came from? And how come that later on when the Legion was stationed along the Transsiberian railroad, guarding it for the Wites and the Entente, they mostly fought with local guerrilla fighters?
It looks like that the attention to details completely abandoned authors, with things concerning Russia and its history, while the whole story unfolds in Russia. I understand that is a work of fiction and so on, but unfortunately, it has greatly "overfictionize". Such a pity, it could be indeed a great game.
