This woman's story is so sad it's created an ache in me. The flow on of all this money loss and working and lost time and new worries will impact the family for YEARS to come. All they wanted to do is have happy holidays together. It's gone from a wholesome and modest dream to problems for them all :(
I’ve purchased 2 new vans over the last 3 years. A new jayco then a new Nova and paid around $2k deposit on each and balance on day of handover on both only after we looked it over.
We are in the market to buy a caravan and heard Tango had gone into liquidation. Now when looking at some of the smaller not so well known builders I wonder if I should bother persuading a van with them or stick with a bigger brand, then I over think it as any company can collapse overnight while keeping the facade of “Business As Usual” to customers walking in the door. It’s devastating for all the victims who have lost their money to this unscrupulous woman!
Considering she is the daughter of a well known caravan dealer of Ian grants. I would hope that they would help out of pocket customers. Good will and all. I personally looked at them also, with the reputation of Ian grants as a relative held great weight. I am so sorry for all the people (customers) involved in this deception.
This would seem to be unconscionable conduct by the Owner of Tango, it would also seem like the Owner/ Director of Tango were trading while insolvent? What I don’t understand is why the legal authorities won’t act on this type of complaint.
This proves that we did the right thing and not go down the new route but went the used route. We feel for all the people who have been ripped off by these criminal people who just set up a business and milk it to bankruptcy.
Not a great situation to be in I have had dealings with liquidators before and lost heaps of money. Liquidators will use up any assets and money that is left for their fees anything that might be left will go to secured creditors, then the directors of the company will go into bankruptcy leaving you nothing. There should be a law that any deposits should be held in a secured trust fund and not released until hand over of caravan. The problem is you did all you can do and did nothing wrong it's just how nearly all caravan manufacturers do business and that needs to change to protect the customers.
I was so close to buying they had one in stock they said I could have one straight away I said I was about a year away from purchasing they said if I pay a $15 k deposit I would get the van in 2025/26 at May 2024 price alarm bells rang I walked away I pray that all those people that lost money get it back
We have been researching for a new van for over 2 years and I'm very concerned at some "manufacturers" are only advertising on FB and only have a mobile number as a contact. We live in WA and can't visit factories etc and there are very few manufacturers in WA. With the increase in the number of manufacturers, so many new names or names we have never come accross, it is very worrying. We are now concidering buying an older Australian made 2nd hand van due to the worrying situation such as this. This is just heart breaking and I wish every victim all the very best for the best outcome, even if the owner has to sell everything she owns to pay something back to the victims. I also hope the owner has no way to enter back into any form of company ownership again.
The caravan manufacturers association appears to protect manufacturers and does not care about potential or actual owners. Thankfully we have our van and feel desperately sad for tango owners. If you want another story about the behaviour of another company (Can be validated by correspondence and other owners) let me know.
Come on this has been going on for years the caravan industry is a joke, no protection for the customer, as bad as the used car industry so so bad@@gorv
The system of deposits and paying for the caravan should be as when buying a house, the dealer doesn’t get the deposit, it goes into a trust fund not managed by the caravan company, when the caravan build reaches a certain point the deposit is paid to the caravan manufacturer with proof it has reached that stage, upon completion the final payment is made just prior to delivery, a bit like when you purchase a car. Just my thoughts anyway.
It is really a shame. The bulk of Australian CaravanDealers and Associations are a mob of criminals. There are a few that are absolute angels that I deal with. I have dealt with overseas firms and it is much easier to find genuine sellers who are trying to give real service. I think the days of the Aussie fair go has gone. We are fast becoming known as rip-off agents.😢😭 I bought my van at a caravan display show from a well known brand. When I went to make a warranty claim on the very first trip we went on the company claimed it wasn’t really a new van because it had been moved around for several shows. The claim was for suspension repairs because they had failed to correctly secure the mounting bolts for the off-road suspension. At this point we hadn’t even been off the bitumen.

Sorry to hear this news, No one should be asked to pay no more than 10% of the van value until the handover day.

It's quite simple really the company was using customers money to fund the business
@@Mick_4591 they should be charged with fraud
One thing for sure is that the owners/ directors are all safe and sound wherever they are and have wiped their hands from the customer's completely

Terrible. They [tango] knew at the time that there were problems when they wanted the full amount. To me that's stealing - which is criminal!
I agree.

Shouldn’t matter who you are, they should be fair to everyone

We don't understand it either. To us, it seems like outright fraud, which is a crime.
Using customers money to fund the business

This is devastating, something needs to be done to safe guard customers against this sort of thing
The caravan industry has to be better regulated

Wow, knowing what we know now, you must be so thankful to have walked away.

Very well said.

We are going to see if we can get the CEO of the Victorian association on to discuss.
@gorv good luck with that.

The proprietor was having issues when with another caravan brand and got out when the heat was on.
