Your reaction was wonderful and I appreciate the song even more now. Thank you so much. I have never seen an opera. I do have three operatic moments I love; Butterfly’s aria (the most moving), ‘Nessun Dorma’, Calaf’s aria from Turandot, (the most powerful) and the ‘Flower Duet’ from Lakmé (the most beautiful). Strange how they are all Asian stories, Japanese, Chinese and Indian respectively. Is there a best bit from ‘The Magic Flute’ you could recommend? 💖🐉
Written over a hundred years ago the plight of Cio Cio (Japanese for butterfly) still resonates. Pinkerton is definitely a bounder and having him admit it preempts the pain and guilt he will feel forever for what he has done. White honkey is an odd expression for a Japanese woman to use and suggests the extent of American influence over her culture. Pinkerton and his “Yankee” wife went back to adopt Butterfly’s son, leading to the tragic, Shakespearean ending. Thank you for playing this and freely expressing so many emotions… sadness, anticipation, laughter, compassion, anger and the physical enjoyment of the groove (pun intended).🐨
Ooh, nice left-field choice. Can't beleive it's 40 years since I first heard it. Underrated stuff, I think - it certainly ifluenced a lot of great music that came later.
There are several Butterfly arias to choose from, all seem to be old recordings of Maria Callas. *Madame Butterfly - Maria Callas - Puccini - (Subtitles: Italian and English) Others attempt various video constructs but without lyrics, the best being Anna Netrebko - Un Bel Di Vedremo (Berlin, 2011) - Memoirs of a Geisha. Also found it streaming on Paramount+ and maybe Marquee TV but I couldn't check.

One night in Bangkok is another song of his, more of a rock song and was very popular at the time.
That was a great experience.
He was such an influencer back in the day after leaving managing The Sex Pistols. His album is a great listen. Buffalo Gals is stunning.
