I played this game religiously when I was a kid in the late 90s to early 2000s. I loved it even though I sucked at playing it lol. I've been searching for this game for literal years now and always came up short because I couldn't remember the name of it. You have no idea the satisfaction I feel now that I know the name of this game. Even hearing the music takes me back to my 10-13 year old self playing this game. I can't wait to buy this game on Steam later today and play it. You have earned a sub from me simply for bringing back my sense of nostalgia.
The intro cinematic is so much better than the roughly contemporary one in Age of Empires. Also probably the first time I heard that commonly used scream sound effect (the "eyaah! eyaaauuh!"). The game was too complicated for my little kid brain, but I spent many hours trying back in the day. I remember randomly finding this game at Target one day.
I loved this game when I was in school. I remember always beating the first map by rushing and buying knights armor from the starting merchant and marching to the first castle. If you battered down the gate you could beat the defenders to the flag with knights for the easy win
This game was the first strategy game I ever played (on an ancient gateway pc) and it was released the year I was born. It’s clunky and outdated but brings back so much nostalgia watching you play esp. hearing that soundtrack. Thanks for making this video

Yep total opposite of how the game should be played. A lot of us are watching it for nostalgia and atmosphere, not to see it get disrespected and steamrolled. I’m going to find a different Let’s Play.
This was a great game, was harder as a child but playing thru it now, in my mid 30's with my wife, I fare much better. We finally figured out how to reliably use cows as the main source of food for all cities (requires turn by turn adjusting the number eaten,birthed, sold etc) and were happily playing thru the campaign. We actually were able to consistently get extremely high population in our counties and had many massive armies running around the countryside in some maps. The last map we played, we 'long played' it so long, that we ended up crashing the game due to too many units, and we kinda stopped playing after that point. I am sure we will revisit it again someday in a couple more years. GOD I loved this game (my little brother did too, he still asks me about it to this day), and I love my wife who sits with me for hours on end, playing these old PC games I grew up with... (We are currently 36 hours into a Civilization 1 match were playing, someday I'll stop being lazy and record some of our gaming sessions for upload!)
I remember the expansion introduced the concept of terror to the AI. If you beat their attempts at conquest by destroying their main army (which they would build every half dozen to 10 seasons) then they would make an army of 50 peasants and just burn all of your fields. Meant you needed to keep a defence or picket army of peasant crushers, something cheap like macemen or pikemen with archers to mop up those terror attacks. Not too hard on small maps with small borders that funnel entry to one or two entrances; but when you have big maps, wide borders and several AI opponents always trying to poke; one group would always get through every so often. It would set you back YEARS having to plow 2 or 3 fields... especially if they got you JUST before harvest and you lost all of your grain.
the micromanagement is the cool part of this game. each turn you have extra workers to use, and you can always get a +1 or more by using them carefully
The strategy for this map is hilarious to me - ham on wood/bows, then when you can't feed them anymore, conscript the entire population and jack up taxes to infinity to add insult to injury. The concept is so silly I can't stop chuckling.
Silly concept indeed, the more people you have in your county, the more productive it is, up to around 1700 people. Why conscript some 300 peasants, with a good county, people fed, you can take out 300 troops every 4 seasons !

Actually this game has a lot of depth because it is mostly balanced and there's a lot of different ways you have to play with different kinds of armies and resources. I just got back into it and am doing the expansion campaign and what I find is how differently I have to manage things being spawned in an area without forests and there being nothing to easily conquer around me. I had to rely on mercenaries and merchants to get the wood I needed. Because I had iron I built tons of units I typically don't like to build like swords and knights. This game is also one you can play slowly or play fast because there's a benefit to econ and just letting the other nobles fight each other while you get your castles built and your tax base up. Yes it's a lot to micromanage and the automatic management doesn't do a great job, but it's also kind of fun because you have to prioritize.
The trick: Sell off all your cows and other resources and buy max wheat from merchant, convert as many fields to wheat and gradually serf broken fields. Max out wood production and mass archers and then utilize macemen. Also purchase mercenaries when they come. You can eventually abuse taxes when your happiness gets 100 by feeding them extra and buying ale from the merchant.
This strategy only works if you play on easy mode (no advanced farming) with advanced farming on its a bit more complicated than just soaking wheat. But yeah generally wheat is more effective than cattle
Why would one do that? Just so you can spend ages recovering that province when is their time to get conquered? A far better tactic is to have the peasants work in your lands and produce stuff, which can be sold and with the resulting funds buy stone to upgrade your castle. AI cannot take a properly defended royal castle. Stockpile goods and watch the town of enemy province. When it passes 1,000 peasants, the graphic changes, the town hall gets a wall around it. Watch the fields, when they almost entirely reclaimed, is time to attack. Send provisions in advance, siege the castle and take it and you have a full province at your disposal, ready to produce whatever you need. If you destroy the fields in advance of your attack, you will have to spends 8-20 seasons just to make it profitable again. Very bad tactic. Off course you could do it for fun. That's what i love about this game, it gives you that option. It doesn't mean is a smart one, but you have it.

Played this a bunch from the PC gamer demo disc - sometime in 1996 I believe Couldn’t afford to buy it but I enjoyed it a lot PC gaming got really exciting in the 90s - lots of interesting games coming out and the graphics were so much better than consoles
Love this game to death. I usually have a more laid-back approach: I like to calmly conquer all. I don't know if my strategy works on expert, as I don't think I ever played that difficulty: I usually go full wheat as well, but then I invest entirely on iron+wood for a full knight army, and stone for a castle fully filled with archers. This allows me to never do the battles manually, since I'm not a big fan of them**. 1500 knight army and 600 archer castle are almost unbeatable by the AIs. Then I just conquer, build new castle, repeat. :) **(I find the battles cool, actually, but the AI has some problems that annoy me.)
I found out a trick by accident. I had like 9 counties or so, and I would put the taxes to the maximum to all of them. One turn, the heart was going to 0 for everyone, the next turn, boom, up to 100! I was getting tons of money with it!

The Best Defense for Castle is Pikeman and Archers and also for Conservative formation is to line a Phalanx with Pikeman behind have the archers, and have some Mace Men on Corners or to be your flank force to either make a final blow or capture or move faster than a Pikeman and also is cost effective. Cheap cost defense is Peasants lined up and have archers behind them.. Full Blitzkrieg offense is Knights and Macemen....The Swordmen are moderate in Speed and moderate Defense for a fortunate pricey Army, but costly Military budget.

i played this with a friend once we built up all big and took out the other lords together then i took all my peasants and made huge peasant armies declared war on him and rushed him with a dozen stacked armies... he was so scared...then he realized it was just 20k peasants lol

I was searching for an old strategy game where there were three ways to gain power: religion, economy and politics but I forgot the name and only remember very little. So I googled and the wikipedia article of this game came up. Even though I played the Lords of the Realm 3 I'm pretty sure that this isn't it. I still play this, when i get sick of civ2, hearts of iron 3, dayz, triple A, fox hole and battlefield 1942 i usually play this through once then get back to the other games i mentioned
Question: if I have army foraging on and their starving in enemy territory, do they lose happiness? In other words, is their any way to smoke these guys out without attacking their castles?
If they starving in enemy territory, they lose more than happiness, they lose men, 10% per turn I believe, until turn 5 of being starved, they die. You lose all the men and all the weapons they were equipped with. What you want to do is use supply county function, send food (grains or cows) to the counties on the frontline. Then have your army take one step into enemy territory, let them forage there. If the message pops up, unfed army, just have them take one step back into your own territory and finish the turn there, they'll get fed. An even better tactic is to build up a large supply in your border county and send 1,000 - 4,000 grains (depending on the size of your army, in advance, to the enemy. Army should follow close behind and time your assault/siege with arrival of the grains. That way when you take the castle, you immediately have lots of food, you can put taxes zero and triple rations for newly conquered territory. It guarantees it bounces back very fast.
the thing that got under my skin about this game is what you mentioned, the auto-battle system is wonky in that it seems to make archers op when you auto-battle. the knights are really good if you play the battles.
knights suck, they are not cost effective. archers dominate sieges and macemen field battles. however, if you want a cheap army that will defeat anything with minimal losses just go for archers with some pikes in the front (later on you can add a few crossbowmen if AI builds armored units).
Actually is OP with advanced farming. If you catch a sunny winter, bushels get multiplied. When it happens, you can easily harvest 6,000 grain for that year, 8,000 is common, my personal record was 12,000 grain in one single year - caught sunny winter through winter.
Chris67132 obviously you can make wheat work with advanced farming on. But it's less reliable and you have to take more time building it up. Cattle is for short game, wheat for long game. It's why you start with so many cows. Against the non aggressive AI you can (usually) out macro the AI and get to the absurd wheat levels.
I've been trying to record this with OBS but the mouse cursor is misaligned in the game while recording, did you experience this as well? Any idea how to fix it without your huge work around?
I think I recorded this running an emulator for windows xp / 98 or something, I don't remember having problems with the mouse cursor though, so I don't think I can help you.

trick is to have a free field and when pesky is attacking you switch crops to free right before their nose and free field to crops

a few knights can take down some castles easy. they run to the flag fast for 2 to no casualties. only need 1-2 units of knights.
27:05 you say there are no hotkeys. There are keybindings though, you can bind your units to the numbers 0-9
also V and H keys for vertical and horizontal
For the plague all you had to do was lower taxes to zero and food to triple for one turn, plague gone.

I was searching for an old strategy game where there were three ways to gain power: religion, economy and politics but I forgot the name and only remember very little. So I googled and the wikipedia article of this game came up. Even though I played the Lords of the Realm 3 I'm pretty sure that this isn't it. If anyone else knows what I'm talking about, let me know.
I still play this, when i get sick of civ2, hearts of iron 3, dayz, triple A, fox hole and battlefield 1942 i usually play this through once then get back to the other games i mentioned
Can you recall how you zoom in and out of the battlefield? I can only see a couple units at a time

Question: if I have army foraging on and their starving in enemy territory, do they lose happiness? In other words, is their any way to smoke these guys out without attacking their castles?
If they starving in enemy territory, they lose more than happiness, they lose men, 10% per turn I believe, until turn 5 of being starved, they die. You lose all the men and all the weapons they were equipped with.
What you want to do is use supply county function, send food (grains or cows) to the counties on the frontline. Then have your army take one step into enemy territory, let them forage there. If the message pops up, unfed army, just have them take one step back into your own territory and finish the turn there, they'll get fed.
An even better tactic is to build up a large supply in your border county and send 1,000 - 4,000 grains (depending on the size of your army, in advance, to the enemy. Army should follow close behind and time your assault/siege with arrival of the grains. That way when you take the castle, you immediately have lots of food, you can put taxes zero and triple rations for newly conquered territory. It guarantees it bounces back very fast.
Yes. If you get the happiness below 25 for 4 turns ...the county revolts!
3rd map is impossible. Everyone just gangs up on you and you run out of people and / or resourses
the thing that got under my skin about this game is what you mentioned, the auto-battle system is wonky in that it seems to make archers op when you auto-battle. the knights are really good if you play the battles.
knights suck, they are not cost effective. archers dominate sieges and macemen field battles. however, if you want a cheap army that will defeat anything with minimal losses just go for archers with some pikes in the front (later on you can add a few crossbowmen if AI builds armored units).
BTW if you ever looked at the leaderboard, my dads username was “The Black Knight” and he was in the top 3.

No it's just more complicated, you can actually make more food with advanced farming.
Actually is OP with advanced farming. If you catch a sunny winter, bushels get multiplied. When it happens, you can easily harvest 6,000 grain for that year, 8,000 is common, my personal record was 12,000 grain in one single year - caught sunny winter through winter.
Chris67132 obviously you can make wheat work with advanced farming on. But it's less reliable and you have to take more time building it up.
Cattle is for short game, wheat for long game. It's why you start with so many cows.
Against the non aggressive AI you can (usually) out macro the AI and get to the absurd wheat levels.
Doesn't even show what difficulty it's on. What's so expert about this, now?

You can use a lot less food if you pick triple ration and move it towards dairy until it just barely allows normal.

I've been trying to record this with OBS but the mouse cursor is misaligned in the game while recording, did you experience this as well? Any idea how to fix it without your huge work around?
I think I recorded this running an emulator for windows xp / 98 or something, I don't remember having problems with the mouse cursor though, so I don't think I can help you.
