You forgot to mention the incarnate is the most OP unit in the game because it can take control of other peoples heroes, which then lets the AI get a new hero, then you can take that until you have squads of heroes which can obliterate everything.
Human airships' response is: "Oh sorry, can't hear you up here over the sound of my ballista!". The Azrac elephant is better though, as it's a T1 unit you can install and pump out disgusting amounts of, can break walls, and generally just stomp unprepared players with.
The expansion to the sequel to this game, Age of Wonders II: Shadow Magic, is a absolute masterpiece and i really hope Sseth would do a video of it one day.
I had a friend show off the lunacy of this game and it was a thing of beauty. (Alas, I got in at the much more comparatively sane AoW3.) Any time I even SUGGESTS he do the same for Shadow Magic, his response is a flat, ardent 'NO'.

Don't let that stop you. There's actually a few variations on the ending depending on who you side with over the course of the game. By far the greatest ending is starting as the Cult of Storms and ending with the High Men (by allying with the Lizards halfway). It is still one of the best endings and your character doesn't take what happens lightly.

I've slowly (really slowly it seems) begun to realize that ~90% of the time the less well-looking a game is, the better its gameplay actually is. ...And sadly enough, not nearly enough other people have realized that, which often causes those better-and-ugly games to not really sell particularly well these days, ultimately causing them to either be abandoned in development or at least not get any sequel or any new games afterwards from the studio which made them. When I was maybe around 10, I was primarily playing game demos from CDs that came with my dad's subscriptions for PC magazines, and Age of Wonders was one of my absolute favorites; I probably played at least 500 hours of that one demo scenario, the orcs being my favorite race due to the not at all broken orc warlord... I miss those times.
Oh man, I probably spent more time playing the Age of Wonders II demo than most other games I've played. The music and atmosphere captivated me as a kid, just thinking back on that feels amazing.
@@youdonegoofed Nostalgia at its best, too bad none of my friends are into AoW, as I've sadly grown tired of enjoying it solo as the AI becomes too predictable, especially as an adult...
One of my all-time favourites. Bought at Walmart out of the cheapo PC games bins they used to have, double-packaged with the first Stronghold. Still have both to this day.
This is one of my favourite games from when I was a kid, and it's wonderful to see it get some love from Sseth. I wish the sequels had kept the ridiculously in-depth unit descriptions, though. It's hard to quantify how much flavour text like that can add to the experience.
I got the official strategy guide for age of wonders from a random bookstore while on vacation when I was like 8, it went through every unit from every race and talked about their unique strengths, I think it also had a campaign walkthrough. I read it cover to cover twice on that trip then bought age of wonders on my mom's computer when I got home. I think I still have it around here somewhere
I feel like as time has gone on, you're able to be more personal with how you express yourself and sprinkle in a bit of humanity in how you present the games with anecdotes I can actually relate to. I'm scared and excited.
Yooo I can't believe somebody finally covered this. I have so many memories of making chains of air galleys to transport units across XL maps in one turn, my friend's lv. 50 leader making a visible path through my minimap as he razed everything, and editing the unencrypted sound effects into stupid nonsense (when they weren't already funnier than anything I'd make anyway like the punch of charm). The game's a masterpiece, thank you so much.
I think Raze option is supposed to be used when attacking enemy territory, so you can destroy their buildings you might not be able to keep while leaving neutral raiders to wreck havoc on enemy lands. It's best used with Undead along with Animate Ruins. Still, I prefer to either Migrate or Loot with other races instead. As amazing as Wraiths are, they're *not* subceptible only to priests and "exorcism". A simple Enchant Weapon spell is all you need to kill them, as they're vulnerable to magic attacks. They're still quite abusable, tho. Wind Walking spell isn't the only way to get Galleons that can move on land. You can also use Free Movement earth spell for it (which you can research earlier and iirc its upkeep is far lower). Lightning Strike and Cold Strike were overpowered in original release version and got nerfed with patches. They're still powerful, tho, but I'd suggest taking Cold Strike over Lightning Strike in patched version, as LS only stuns for 1 turn, while CS freezes for 2. "Dominator" is my personal favorite build in AOW1. I used it in one of my campaign playthroughs and maxed out my Defense on 1st map, using Stone Skin and Bless spells. I'd also recommend trying out ranged builds, like Poison Darts with Marksmanship IV (Archery's your worst ranged option, imo). There are actually 3 different endings to both campaigns, not just the 4 endings you mentioned. "Shadow Magic" is actually a 'standalone expansion', meaning it's a separate game and doesn't require you to own "Wizard's Throne". I'm not really a fan of AoW2, tbh. It removed leader leveling, so the best thing to do with your leader is to just have it sit in a Wizard Tower while your heroes and units do all the work. :( Thankfully, AoW3 brought leader leveling back and is *much* better for it.
this is the actual best and most effective ad I've ever seen. even more than the sears air conditioner commercial, which lives in my brain and will be the last thing I remember as alzheimer's robs me of all of my memories of friends and family.
I have very fond memories of this game. I remember playing a toad man spellcaster with the cult of storms. On the mission where you fight the whole ass Azrac empire at once, I got overwhelmed very early on. I went on the run with my leader and another spellcaster, fighting a guerilla campaign across the map without owning any cities, until I found the Azrac leader and ended him in a glorious battle of my two guys against his army. Chain lightning is what you might call "perfectly balanced"
Haven't played AoW 1, but AoW 2 is source of great memories. I really liked how terrain and location of units on strategic map was reflected in combat map.
I remember playing age of wonders: shadow magic and having to stop because the AI can essentially 'detect lethal' on your faction leader during battles and not matter how esoteric the methods would manage to snipe my leader causing a game over. I got too salty, but this video makes me want to try it again. Another great video Sseth!
This is one of my favorite games of all time. There are so many way to break the game and you showed me a few more I didn't know. 100% agree the best unit is the Giant but you skipped over the best tier 1 unit: The Elephant. More HP and damage than pretty much any other t1 unit and can also break walls. So good.
@@theblobconsumes4859 I know right! It sounds so otherworldly and like, like 70's fantasy inspired and perfectly complements the homely graphics. I dont think any fantasy game other than the first AoE has gotten the style really right.
This may be my favorite episode yet. It must truly be a gift to be blessed by the gods, to be able to have SSeth as a friend IRL, who you can explore the weird parts of the internet with.
Holy moly - thank you! I remember getting a demo of this as a kid, and never understanding what was going on, but found the images to be unreal, and burned into my memory. Have been trying to remember the name of it for literally decades - thank you so much!
I love Age of Wonders 1 because the best races are the cave races of either good or evil. Dwarves (or more specifically, giants), led by moles to rewrite the map's terrain (or gobbos if you go evil) are the best way to play the game. I've never played a game (even the sequels) with three layers and hidden cave troves to explore like this one. Bonus if you "quick battle" because, due to giants being "siege units", they get to throw two boulders without melee enemies getting to act before they go to melee. Four veteran giants beat any other stack. My favorite moment, though, was when playing as highmen in campaign at the last stage - the humans defeated the undead (who are supposed to be the biggest threat on the map) on turn 2 (surprising me, who had no way of seeing it coming) by sending their airship at the undead lich-king and killing him single-handedly because the undead hadn't produced ranged units yet, you can't flee from battles, and the lich-king only had stockpiled enough mana for about 2 magic missiles. The airship survived the two magic missiles and then parked overhead, ballistaing the lich in the face until the unstoppable forces that conquered death itself fell to a single air unit.
3:16 The best part about little dark age edits is when the apparent ''good old days'' are depicted through military imagery with men dying in some senseless war to enrich some nobleman or oligarch
"Man, those were days, even though I wasn't alive back then. Paranoia was common in every major country, young men were forced to join the military and torture and mass murder were supported in many countries. Time to make an edit showing how badass, cool and epic those times were."
12:31 It's an absolute breath of fresh air to see a suicide bombing joke about The Japanese instead of The Afghani or Arabian People. It's good to see The OGs getting credit where credit is due for doing it first instead of copying tactics from another country.
This review unlocked a core memory for me. I had one of those demo discs as a kid, and this was one of the games on it. I could never remember what the game was, however, and could only remember the general idea. I even own age of wonders 3 didn't even realize it was the first. Thanks Sseth.
I loved this game. Put way too many hours in. Wonderful. Also - there is a spell called tornado or some crap, cast it on yourself and you instantly get moved to a random spot on the map. Instant escape, or cast it in an enemy. Also, looting cities and rebuilding them is also a fun way to make friends.
i used to use it to deal with walls. just throw the person around until he lands outside walls and then kill him, assuming he doesn't die from falling too many times first.
I friend of mine gave me Age of Wonders 1 as a gift many many years ago and i love the game. Thanks for the review, Sseth Also I did not expect that LTG would have a cameo here
Awesome video. The only critique I have is not mentioning the easter egg spell to permanently change a unit's appearance. "Cosmagic Surgery" ...Seriously, it's real.
dude, AoW 1 gave me so many good memories. Playing alone for hours without even noticing the sunrise, its amazing. I feel that modern 4x arent just like that, I'm not saying that those games are bad, but AoW 1 had so many things in a very simple gameplay without a lot of geopolytical-eco-geography bullshit. Game it's simple, if you pick Lizards, rush flood, pick Orcs, enchant weapon and mass orc soldiers, and the builds are just as simple as that. Definetly, one of the best RTS games I've ever played. (Shadow Magic is pretty cool too)
Honestly my favourite game from the story to the soundtrack. It's one of those perfect games. I also loved how the premade scenarios sprinkled those little bits of lore in.
I would really like to see Sseth playing ,,songs of syx "in my opinion the game doesn't get the attention it should and it's a very ambitious project that is still in development
Big fan of AoW3, was always curious about the older entries and this is a great introduction. AoW3 is the best, most involved strategy game I've witnessed. Of the one ancient thread I found that compared 4x games, those who played it, agreed. It's kind of a hidden gem that's hiding in plain sight. I love HoMM and Xcom and Civ in their own right, but it's a whole different beast. I've long been interested in watching people play this game at the highest level, and made a few jumps each time blowing my mind how this person is so much better at the game than the previous. I love Black Arrow Gaming's channel, which wasn't my final stop in the power hierarchy, but he's quite incredible, and every video has tons of wall of text comments discussing how to improve his play even more. I am truly passionate about AoW and thank you for reading.
Happy to see Seth consistently upload and review a game I'll probably never play but it's always interesting to see him talk about it and also it's hilarious. Happy Thanksgiving Seth and hope you have a good day.
I own AoW 3 and each expansion. This is all news to me. Thanks Seth for bringing value to my panic-relief-based purchasing decisions from when I was a teenager with too much disposable income.
Also about the resolution: If you create a CUSTOM resolution in your driver for 1024x600, you can play the game in 16:9 without stretching and still have the 800x600 pixel density. AoW is a window-blinds style game, and by using 1024x600 it just enlarges the UI space without any wonkiness. Basically it's free real estate.
If time travel was possible, I would go back in time with a bunch of modern day indie developers and have them produce games just for Sseth to review them 25 years later
AoW1 is my favourite game from the series and childhood (I love it more than Heroes3) but since I got windows 10 I think I couldnt play it due to the issue present. I am insanely happy there is fix to this issue available now, I used to spent hours to browse through internet for a fix. Thank you for bringing my childhood again, going to set up a new save with my brothers!
God its my actual childhood come back to haunt me. My family desktop back then was so old that, while the game worked, the music always skipped endlessly. To hear the actual music is like waking up from a nightmare. Bless you Seth and bless you CD section of the office supply store that had these games.
Aww man, you didn't mention how broken Azrac Elephants are as a Tier 1 unit - also those flight enchanted ships are a nod to a classic tactic from the game that fathered this whole genre: Master of Magic - which our guy here should review one day. BTW I highly recommend the "Ziggurat Engine" and "AoW Evolved" mods from aowheaven (install the one you like the most - I like & play both but slightly favor Ziggurat). They both provide much better overall balance without removing the fun craziness Sseth mentions like flooding the map with biblical deluge, new units (with new sprites), new spells & abilities and even better lore in unit description texts. There's also an active multiplayer community you can find on GOG's AoW forum.
I never tried the Ziggurat or Aow evolved mods but aowheaven is a GEM. I probably downloaded every single map in there , played and edited half of them , eventually got the confidence to post one of my own there. I was working on another larger map but i felt like i was the only guy on earth still playing this game when i saw that the last 2 maps uploaded were from me and the guy who left the one and only review on my map. I fking giggled when i saw this video from a youtuber with SOOO many subscribers.

FYI Express vpn was bought by Kape Technologies on 13.09.21 for 1 bn $. Kape Technologies changed its name from Crossrider in 2018. That’s because, under the latter title, they’ve been injecting users devices with adware and malware while collecting personal data. Now they own ExpressVPN, CyberGhost VPN, Private Internet Access (PIA), and ZenMate. Soon after the purchase by Kape, worrying information about ExpressVPN’s CIO Daniel Gericke appeared. Turns out, he’s a former US military member who illegally worked as a mercenary hacker for UAE, helping create a hacking tool for spying named Karma. What’s more, he was fined $335,000 and agreed to cooperate with US Justice Department and FBI. Let’s also not forget that Teddy Sagi, one of the Kape founders, worked for Israeli intelligence and was also convicted for inside trading. Both Israel and UAE are US allies. All above information comes from article on vpnpro site called "Who owns your VPN? 105 VPNs run by just 24 companies."

"Harry Potter and the Yugoslavic war tribunal" SSeth always asks the questions that I didn't know I wanted the answers.

Honestly the balls on ExpressVPN to let Sseth be this brutally truthful on an ad is commendable. Remember when VPNs used to only advertise that you can watch unblocked Netflix in any country or shit like that without daring to mention anything remotely dubious?
In the current timeframe and political climate, its a tactical move which will help them sell even faster

Thanks for your tactical advice, this is a great comment. You clearly know your stuff.

My favorite game since 1999. I have always thought this was the better Heroes that everyone but me slept on. Sseth doesn't disappoint.
Classic Inioch moment, the humans killed him the first time for a reason after all, very lore friendly

Warp Party is my brother's favourite spell in fantasy genre to this day.
i used to use it to deal with walls. just throw the person around until he lands outside walls and then kill him, assuming he doesn't die from falling too many times first.
I friend of mine gave me Age of Wonders 1 as a gift many many years ago and i love the game. Thanks for the review, Sseth

dude, AoW 1 gave me so many good memories.

What am I thankful for this year? Nothing I live in agony. But Seth makes me slightly live less in pain
800x600 was a big part of my childhood. I played Age of Empires 2 and Deus Ex at that resolution back in the day.
800x600 still looks pretty damn good on a CRT, shame almost no one has them anymore
Dude, Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic was my jam as a kid, even if I was super bad at it. Love that game
You can fix the inverted pixels you get from alt tabbing if you change the resolution, then change it back. It will reset the graphics.
13:28 that complete failure to keep a straight face
Sseth bringing up joy and sustenance during thanksgiving with another game from 20 years ago. God bless our African warlord
If time travel was possible, I would go back in time with a bunch of modern day indie developers and have them produce games just for Sseth to review them 25 years later
Fun fact: you can still have them produce retro games today and Sseth would review them.
He did review a game that was still in beta.
Maybe you did and that's how we got all these games.
Sseth, the man, the legend, who can turn VPN shilling into some kind of manifesto
The single best ad for a VPN. Hands down
God its my actual childhood come back to haunt me. My family desktop back then was so old that, while the game worked, the music always skipped endlessly. To hear the actual music is like waking up from a nightmare. Bless you Seth and bless you CD section of the office supply store that had these games.
The Age of Wonders series is a true gem, unjustly underrated.
Thanks for the great review!
@@rockapartie Maybe not underrated, but not very well-known, it is certainly never really talked about. I never heard about it before this video.
Can't wait to see Sseth reviewing a prehistoric party game to bring BC gamers some love and recognition
This was like the only VPN Sponsor that got me to listen. It told me a story (a series of events) that could happen to anyone, told me how corporation and governments learn and abuse your privacy and its effects, and told be not only how the VPN protects your privacy but how legit it is. Some content creators only try to make the sponsor entertaining the but only a few tell it honestly, Good stuff all around.
Actual mood. Was just Sendible Chuckling until it mentioned the court order and then got real fuckin interested
23 year old games are actually good being functional and in terms of content , i do understand the graphical glitches on these games if you alt tab as they used to run on direct x 6 and early version of dx9 and with 256k colour coding which is not compatible with current gpu cards. I remember facing the same issue for my OG age of empires copy, Glad they made a remastered version
With age of empires if you killed explorer.exe it would fix the problem.
The music and atmosphere in Age of Wonders is the purest embodiment of equal parts enchanting and nostalgic in any game I know.
And I didn't even play it when it released or anything, saw it for the first time around 2014 or something. Yet it just does that. Magical.
