In the original comic, The Mask was much more violent and nihilistic, it was Jim Carrey and the director Chuck Russell who brought in the homages to classic Looney Tunes... so you are right, it was literally made for Jim Carrey
The director Chuck Russell had the script written with Jim Carrey specifically in mind (adapted from the Dark Horse comics). When Jim read the script he said "it's like this movie was written for me!" To which the director said "It was, so if you say no, we're in big trouble" The comics are hilarious and wildly violent. Essentially Deadpool before Deadpool
Fun fact: Jim Carrey wanted the character of Stanley Ipkiss to be just as interesting as the Mask, so the audience wouldn't get bored, so he based the character's entire personality on his father, a lovable goof who loved cartoons and was always struggling to make ends meet.

Notice how the first two times Stanley puts on the mask, it takes him over. But when he puts it on in the park, he clearly has more control over it, because he can take it right off. He doesn't wake up the next day, thinking it could be a dream. If we voluntarily take on our darker side, we can get control over it. Remember Ben Stein's advice? "Go as both yourself AND the Mask." That's what we all have to do. I sure do miss when stories like this, with actual moral lessons, were more the norm, and they had some actual thought and love put into them. Great react Vkunia! With the obvious exception for the bugging eyes and more cartoonier bits, it really was mainly green paint on Jim's face. All expressions were his own.
The thing thats fun about this movie (among other things): When it comes to the two ladies, Cameron's lounge singer is coded as a "bad girl", and the redheaded reporter is coded as a "good girl", but it subverts it by making the 'good girl' be the one who sells him out, and the bad girl the loyal and sweet one.
I have a friend who was one of the gang members in this movie. (He got the giraffe animal balloon.) One day he asked Jim Carrey if he could take pictures of the makeup process and Jim said okay. There are multiple pieces and not one rubber prosthetic. There are cheek pieces, jaw pieces, chin and brow pieces as well as the skull cap to cover his hair. After it's all applied amd latex is used to smooth everything out, it's all painted green. False teeth finish it all off.
The guy who got the giraffe was my favorite in the gang and I remember him to this day (first saw the movie 2 decades ago). Because he went from a badass to a kid who wouldn't let the other kid touch his cool giraffe. Always makes me guffaw😂

Plus, no way it didn't have a little hand, after Tina's kick, in keeping itself away from the bum goons and landed with Milo - because a dog Mask? That's hilarious, the funniest option.
I love the scene when The Mask sings Cuban Pete. It's so funny and very Broadway-esque. I really really love the bit toward the end where he appears over the bar and pulls a Clint Eastwood with that line from Dirty Harry. "Now you have to ask yourself one question: Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya....punk?"
Fun fact: For the park scene where they're emptying his pockets, Jim Carrey is actually wearing shorts with the pockets cut out. Actors laying down beneath Jim Carrey are passing props up through the pocket holes to the actors to give the illusion that The Mask's pockets can hold an infinite number of objects like a cartoon.
Well the sequel was originally planned for 1996. And brought back most of the main cast. I’m pretty sure Jim Carrey had a bunch of movies it was already working on and declined the role. So there’s no room in the schedule for the sequel with all the effects to make it. It would be put on ice until 2000 something. Hell, there was an advertisement for The Mask 2 With Jim Carry on a 95’ issue of Nintendo power. Hell, Movie Posters where made before before the contracts were signed for pre-production. Hollywood does this to this to build up excitement for studio investors.
“Landfill Park” LOL There’s a park in Virginia Beach/Norfolk, VA that is the site of an old landfill, called Mount Trashmore. Back in the 90’s, there was a morning radio show that started a minor panic when they were reporting that there was an evacuation order for the surrounding area, saying that the methane levels from the old landfill were getting too high. There was no evacuation order, no high methane levels, but it was April 1st. FCC hammered them!

Meanwhile, Tina SEEMS to be the classic manipulative film noir "femme fatale," only to reveal that she's really a very sweet, compassionate woman beneath the surface.

I saw this when it came out on video. We rented it and then I got my parents to buy it later that year. It realy sparked my interest in Norse mythology as well as psychology.
Where I live, we actually have a "Landfill Park" but it's not called that. t's called Mt. Trashmore. It's basically a manmade mountain made with trash and sod repeatedly piled on top of each other. It has a skate park, a bike path, people ride their sleds there, and they hold fireworks displays there every 4th of July. It's pretty cool.
Cameron Diaz's entrance cemented her as a star for the next decade. Interestingly her best acting is in Oliver Stone's Any Given Sunday where she stands toe to toe with Al Pacino. This may be the best dog actor since Jeb from The Thing. The funniest line from Doyle, "SWAT got offered to open Vegas" after the dance number. That and "I thought you'd have a sense of humour... after all... YOU MARRIED HER !"
"Is this Jim Carrey's id?" You hit it exactly. The original comic book (published by Dark Horse) is much darker than the film. Stanley goes completely to the dark side, and Stanley's girlfriend and Kelloway have to stop him. The balloon animals scene is supposed to be a follow-up for a scene where that gang had mugged Stanley, but the set-up got cut. "Landfill ParK" may be a reference to Mount Trashmore in Virginia Beach, VA, which is an old garbage heap coved over with dirt and sod and used as a public park. Yes, it's an actual thing. Loki appears the horrible sequel. Jim Carrey and Cameron Diaz do not. It's a pity, because one of the things I was really hoping for in the sequel was Cameron Diaz putting on the mask and us getting a look at "unfettered id Tina."
Val, you just watched a movie that goes back to the year I graduated from Middle School (8th grade) also the first graduation of the new school I might add. I quoted this movie so much in 1994 that I started to annoy my classmates lol. "Can't make the scene, if you don't have the green, I better make a little stop" "It's Party time, P-A-R-T-Y? Because I gotta!" "I think he wants to communicate" "Sorry son, the dog was rabid had to put it down." One of my favorite Jim Carrey films. He did this one, Dumb & Dumber, and Ace Venture: Pet Detective all in the same year. Nice reaction! The villain aka Dorian also played a villain in Pulp Fiction. Nice first role for Cameron Diaz.
19:19 It's a classic movie trick that goes all the way back to the days of Technicolor. Technicolor's biggest problem was that it needs a lot of light to render anything-- the characteristic look of a Technicolor film comes from the intense studio lighting flattening out the contrast. Another problem is you can't shoot things in actual nighttime conditions, so a night scene gets shot with a lot of light and is then underexposed and recolored to look like a scene under a dark sky.
Landfills make for great parks (though they don't often have pink clouds coming out of them). My city, Virginia Beach, has one called Mount Trashmore, and it's great.
14:03 Ages ago, I asked a young lady if she wanted to study swing dancing with me. She didn't know what I meant, so I showed her this movie and emphasized this scene. She thought the movie was a _hoot,_ but at the end of the dance sequence, she said she didn't think she had the energy for it. 🤷♂
ok the most fun for me at this reaction is the part everyone understanding the loki referance today.. i needed to sit and explain all my friends, family members, classmates.. who's loki and as stranger concept they didn't care much.. so now the colture can appreaciate good referance. :)
When I was a kid, they used to show Tex Avery's cartoons on TV from time to time, so watching Jim Carrey become a whistling wolf in the table of a restaurant looked hilarious to me. It brought back memories.
Even if they'd had the fingerprint match, it wouldn't have mattered. Not too many people who see this movie stop to think about the fact that someone who worked at the bank would obviously have his fingerprints on the money from that bank.
10:54 that line HURTS the older I get. They’re looking for a guy just LIKE you, just not you. But honestly I’ve learned that without confidence to back up your kindness, you’ll always be just some nice guy. Niceness isn’t enough.
They had to apply multiple prosthetic pieces to Jim Carrey’s face to make sure his facial expression’s weren’t restricted it was a 4 hour process. Also the producers wanted to scrap the Cuban Pete scene because they thought it made no sense to put a musical number in a comedy movie 🤷
8:26 a key thing to remember is the mask can influence or straight up control other people as well. Those goons weren't impressed, they were under the mask's spell.
My favorite Carrey movie. This is based off a pretty graphic comic book, but you don't see that here. This is just the mask unleashing a man with every cinematic facial gesture and impression known to man. In other words, just Jim Carrey unleashed.
Marvels Loki series has an easter egg regarding this movie. In season 2 Loki tries to activate a capability much like Stanley do in the doctor's office when he learned it could be a Loki mask.
The Mask is a masterpiece. I watched the VHS nonstop when I was a kid. It made me a Jim Carrey fan for life. I was super scared though of the mob boss when he put the mask on when I was a kid.
The mask brings out the most deepest darkest desires of the user morality is out of question. The origin of the mask is not confirmed Loki is just one theory another is it was made by an African tribe along ago. He did have a comic book with Lobo from DC universe.
Underwater welding is one of if not the most dangerous job on the planet. People die like every dive, so that diver at the start who got crushed was pretty accurate. The hazard pay is crazy though.
My siblings and I watched this together all the time, it was hard to find a movie that all 5 of us enjoyed. Who doesn't love Jim Carrey? Our favorites were this and The Mummy (1999). If you haven't seen that one I highly recommend it. Imo it's the perfect adventure movie.
5:32 well Jim Carrey co star and friend Jeff Daniels in Dumb and dumber talked about gettting the role of that movie and said he did ace Ventura early in 1994 and then right then just got done shooting mask so my best guess is first ace Ventura then the mask and then Dumb and Dumber
In my experience, many extremely talented comedians get that way because they understand how important laughter is to people with darkness in their lives - because they have darkness in their lives. So, it's not hard to play a serious role because that part of their life is so familiar to them.
Yeah you're actually not entirely wrong. The original draft of the movie was a horror comedy with the Mask as a supernatural serial killer. The idea was for it to replace the Nightmare on Elm Street series. When the idea to cast Carrey came up, they completely reworked the film to fit with his style of comedy, molding it around him.
Hey, V-! Did you know there is an animal called the vikuña? It lives on the highest slopes of the Andes mountains, and it closely resembles a tiny llama. It is highly prized for its very soft fur.

The muffler scene in this movie is so much more tame than the comic. like holy hell i can never unsee it.
24:20 "That music is for his ponytail" 🤣🤣🤣
The redhead is Amy Yasbeck, she was a cast member on "Wings" and was married to the late John Ritter of "Threes Company" fame.
07:20 fun fact, The Mask is a cartoon.
23:43. Yes they did. They were just discussing that a few minutes earlier.
Ace Ventura was Jim Carrey's first big movie, then the Mask, then Dumb and Dumber.
The Mask ("December 29, 1994") - Ace Ventura ("February 4, 1994")
Actually, The Mask was released on July 28th, 1994.
@@tristenmoore1275my brother was born 10 days before lol
16:25, “you’re so screwed dude”. VKunia, sometimes you say the weirdest things unintentionally and I love you for it!!!
I like your commentary on the Loki lore... Makes me head-canon that there is definitely a "The Mask" variant of Loki in the MCU Multiverse
ok the most fun for me at this reaction is the part everyone understanding the loki referance today.. i needed to sit and explain all my friends, family members, classmates.. who's loki and as stranger concept they didn't care much.. so now the colture can appreaciate good referance.
They both awesome on the dance floor 14:19
The mask goosebump was how the person couldn’t take it off.
We had an Australian Goosebumps. It was called round the twist
Ace Ventura was released 29th April '94, The Mask was released 19th August '94.
The Goosebumps episode was called The Haunted Mask :)
this is one of my fav of jim carrey films followed by ace venturer i was 14 when both films came out
27:37 maybe Milo is Loky? or just a really smart dog.
The Mask grants the user toon-force powers.
1994 was Jim Carreys golden year that made him a superstar. "The Mask", "Ace Ventura" and "Dumb & Dumber" were all made this year.
Ace Ventura was first, the Mask was second
My favorite Carrey movie. This is based off a pretty graphic comic book, but you don't see that here. This is just the mask unleashing a man with every cinematic facial gesture and impression known to man. In other words, just Jim Carrey unleashed.
Been reacting with you for 2 years V, keep doing what your doing
Marvels Loki series has an easter egg regarding this movie. In season 2 Loki tries to activate a capability much like Stanley do in the doctor's office when he learned it could be a Loki mask.
Omg one of my favorite jim Carrey movies. I remember being taken to see this when I was 5 with my older sister
19:23 - It's called 'American Night'. Invented in the 60's
The Mask is a masterpiece. I watched the VHS nonstop when I was a kid. It made me a Jim Carrey fan for life. I was super scared though of the mob boss when he put the mask on when I was a kid.
The Mask: A Master of Toon Force
The mask brings out the most deepest darkest desires of the user morality is out of question. The origin of the mask is not confirmed Loki is just one theory another is it was made by an African tribe along ago. He did have a comic book with Lobo from DC universe.
There was also a crossover comic featuring the Mask and the Joker.
Underwater welding is one of if not the most dangerous job on the planet. People die like every dive, so that diver at the start who got crushed was pretty accurate. The hazard pay is crazy though.
Toon is such a underrated super power! The mask and who framed Rodger rabbit are two great examples of how awesome toon is!!
This movie is an absolute CLASSIC! 🤣
The mask doesn’t change your personality. It unleashes the id of the personality of who wears it. I loved the scene where Milo puts on the mask.
20:50 he was shot before, but didnt do enything to hin, because he has the powers of a god.
I dont know why comedians(good ones) are so good at serious roles, both eternal sunshine and 23 are insane jim carrey movies.
I seen this at 5 years old when it came out on VHS. Such a classic film
Hey, V-! Did you know there is an animal called the vikuña? It lives on the highest slopes of the Andes mountains, and it closely resembles a tiny llama. It is highly prized for its very soft fur.
I love Peter Greene. His take on bad guys is always spot on. He's an accomplished actor and you can slot him in anywhere. He loves the 'bad boy' roles, but he's great in anything!
27:20 "Actually, I'd be scared if he had several..." LMAO
I remember Goosebumps books. One specifically. Dark green or turquoise cover with mummy on it. Thank you for 0.00001 second of nostalgia 💪😂
