In the show Barney was actually the bravest man. He was small in stature and often scared but he would stand his ground. That's the definition of bravery, being scared but doing the job anyway.

Say they see someone being mugged and they just pretend they didn't see or hear anything or even run away instead of getting help for that person but, if even though they are scared and chose to stand up to a person they know and believe they have no hope of beating then in that moment they may be considered brave. It's also left up to ones perspective of things. One could say he would be foolish to stand up to a stronger opponent.
This show was so good. It’s much older than I am (born in ‘95) but I grew up watching this show with my dad. I’ve seen every episode, the black and white ones at least, and have some very fond memories of sitting around watching this show with him and my sister. I intend to watch it with my kids someday. It’s timeless

Yes he already had a good acting resume at the time. But it was his comedic side that made Andy want to bring him on the show, and happily stepped aside for him as comic relief.
My favorite Barney scene. That's the nice thing about a clown character. When they can rise to challenges it adds a whole new dynamic to their character.

If you were looking for Ron, he would always be with Andy & Don on the set. They were always together. My late wife and I would watch this show's reruns on cable late into the morning, always happy times.

Did you notice the bad guys elected to stand down after Barney used his own lines, not Andy's previous words in the courthouse. Best show on TV. We'll never see another one like it.

What a great learning tool for young ones. It shows courage in the face of fear. I had my girls watch this shoe a lot. Lots of life skills to be learned. I am so glad they let Barney have this episode. Really showed wha was inside that character. Well done Don!!!
I always loved the ones where Barney was in some situation and Andy saved him on the low. That's true friendship right there. We don't see that in tv or even real life as much anymore. Loved Barney representing the law in classy and badass ways.
The faint smile on Andy`s face as he gets out of the squad car makes me realize the exercise was more about getting Barney`s self respect back than removing two illegal peddlers…
Every LEO has stepped into this scenario repeatedly in his/her career. You don’t know for sure what the outcome will be but you do your job, don’t backdown. That was truly a 20th century moment on a 20th century show. God I used to love the Andy Griffith Show. Barn, Andy, Floyd, Opie, Aunt Bee, Gomer, Earnest T Bass, Otis. A Tennessee Williams meets John Steinbeck play in serial form. Definitely one of the best shows of all time.

One of my favorite parts in this episode is when Andy went to those guys and told them to beware of Barney and he shows up and scared the heck out of those guys until everyone in town started laughing when they heard the story.
One of the best things about this show was how Andy and Barney always had each others back. Andy would always help Barney out on the sly and had the class to never let him know what he did and Barney would do what he can to defend or back Andy up. There's not one show with such a strong bond between two characters male or female today.
Lawman Barney is a great episode, which shows Don Knotts' range as an actor. It makes you think there were days in Mayberry when Barney was as comically bumbling as we have seen him, and there were days where he was a serious lawman.
Allan Melvin played a whole host of different characters guest starring on TAGS. I'd say he was probably in about 10 - 12 episodes total. Then he became a semi-regular on the spinoff Gomer Pyle, USMC. People often wonder why producers and directors of TV shows keep bringing back the same character actors, episode after episode and year after year, to play in guest-starring roles, as opposed to trying out new people. The answer is simple. With someone like Melvin, you KNEW what you had: A proven commodity, a dependable actor who would always show up on time, always knew his lines, and would never try to steal a scene from the stars of the show. No problems at all, no fuss, very low maintenance. But at the same time, very competent.
Never mess with Deputy Fife, he ticketed Allan Melvin and Barney Phillips for littering in different episodes,arrested Gomer for making illegal U-turn, also dressed in drag to avert bank robbers....and still has ten toes.
@@ILoveOldTWC One episode he played some sort of army personnel for the newly enlisted. A different episode I remember him playing a hotel Detective who was a ex Police Officer. At times he wasn't the bad one. I had to think hard on that though lol!!
This is where art doesn't mimic reality. Officers are expected to keep their guns ready and will not hesitate to draw it on you if you make a wrong move.
This is a great example of how you write yourself out of a corner. If you can't write a believable resolution, then don't introduce the conflict. The writers here did fine job setting up and conflict and writing a believable and thought provoking resolution.
Excellent life lesson being taught here. I love this show and watched it in the 1960’s. My 30+ year old children watch Andy & Barney even today. What a great show and what great friends they both were to each other in real life. I miss these days when life seemed simpler.
Whatever you say about Barney, he always took his job seriously and wanted to enforce the letter of the law even though he had difficulty doing that sometime. Good for you Barney. And Andy was nearby just in case of trouble.

Allan Melvin played a whole host of different characters guest starring on TAGS. I'd say he was probably in about 10 - 12 episodes total. Then he became a semi-regular on the spinoff Gomer Pyle, USMC. People often wonder why producers and directors of TV shows keep bringing back the same character actors, episode after episode and year after year, to play in guest-starring roles, as opposed to trying out new people. The answer is simple. With someone like Melvin, you KNEW what you had: A proven commodity, a dependable actor who would always show up on time, always knew his lines, and would never try to steal a scene from the stars of the show. No problems at all, no fuss, very low maintenance. But at the same time, very competent.

Never mess with Deputy Fife, he ticketed Allan Melvin and Barney Phillips for littering in different episodes,arrested Gomer for making illegal U-turn, also dressed in drag to avert bank robbers....and still has ten toes.

@@ILoveOldTWC One episode he played some sort of army personnel for the newly enlisted. A different episode I remember him playing a hotel Detective who was a ex Police Officer. At times he wasn't the bad one. I had to think hard on that though lol!!
This is where art doesn't mimic reality. Officers are expected to keep their guns ready and will not hesitate to draw it on you if you make a wrong move.
This is a great example of how you write yourself out of a corner. If you can't write a believable resolution, then don't introduce the conflict. The writers here did fine job setting up and conflict and writing a believable and thought provoking resolution.

I love this show and watched it in the 1960’s. My 30+ year old children watch Andy & Barney even today. What a great show and what great friends they both were to each other in real life. I miss these days when life seemed simpler.

Whatever you say about Barney, he always took his job seriously and wanted to enforce the letter of the law even though he had difficulty doing that sometime. Good for you Barney. And Andy was nearby just in case of trouble.

1:06 Just a little context of time: *That is a 1962 Ford Galaxy 4-Door* and they usually used fairly new cars for their series --- not generally more than a year older than the filming until much later in the 60s when they could get more vehicles at cheaper prices if they were 1-3 years older than the series --- depending on how popular the series is.
One of my favorite episodes....Barney was great in this.
