    just read an article where a 8 people drowned from a capsized boat the only survivor knew how to tread water , which he did for 18 hours before being rescued. this video contains vital lifesaving information thanks for taking the time to post it.

      @@tander101 I just saw a better TH-cam video. The guy used the breaststroke leg motion but one at a time. Critically, he also said to lean forward as though you're really attempting _stationary breaststroke._ By leaning forward it's easier to distribute your weight so that you're not fighting gravity (and heading straight down into the depths).

    I was in the merchant navy for many years and this is exactly how we were taught to tread water for our survival training. We were taught to tread water using the breast stroke kick and side hand movement and to tread water for 20 minutes to pass our exam. It was tough at first like anything you learn new, but over the years I learned to relax and do this easily. Stick to one technique rather than using all the techniques to tread. You will have your own favourite way of treading but I recommened the one I was taught which is the breast stroke kick. Good luck everyone.

      I joined the navy and have no idea how to tread water (still). At basic, they teach you how to float on your stomach and a very strange drifting/swimming-on-your-back style and then teach you to float with uniforms on. Each one is about...5-10 minutes. Just for survival purposes

      that must be tough re-learning everything, but it should come back quick.
      about treading the water, I failed xD
      Still trying to master swimming, then I'll jump into deep water, gradually. I'm still scared I won't be able to come up once I sink deep down below. They should provide us with ropes or something at the pool just in case xD

    This video isn't for someone who never swam or is afraid of the water. Being relaxed is crucial; your muscles can't be tense. Most people panic when they are submerged- you need to breathe out slowly in the water; do not hold your breath. Besides helping you relax, it also allow you to take a breath when you are above the surface. If you are tense/panicking, a kickboard or noodle won't save you. You will sink when experimenting with this, so you have to be prepared to relax/breathe.

    I've been frequenting the pool practicing off youtube videos too, and here are some tips from newbie to newbie.... Practice your kicks on your back - if you're moving you're doing good. Don't underestimate sculling (using your forearms and hands) - you can also practice this while on your back to propel yourself. Experiment with how much force you need to push against the water to get yourself to move; try sculling harder at different angles to see how much faster you move. These videos make it look so easy, some of them are even slowed down a notch - you probably have to move a little faster and harder than it looks. About the breaststroke kick, you will bob up and down a lot when using that method - for me it's guaranteed panic-mode. Learning how to scull should help stabilize the bobbing.

      Jordan Seager it seems swimming is about turning off the fight or flight response. I'm learning swimming and that seems the cause of all problems why I lose my buoyancy or fail to do a stroke. the body naturally reacts like if I'm going to fail or sink and then muscles tense up which causes the body to sink. I think it's better to learn swimming with a professional in a shallow pool first.

    I never thought I can swim, but believe me it's easy. I have taken just 24 classes, an hour each and I can now. I had never before entered a pool but now I can swim freestyle, backstroke and breast stroke (obviously not for much distance, still learning). Always start with a shallow pool (4ft - 4.5ft deep)...it helps in building confidence and getting the fear of water out.

    Swimming and tread water are two completely different things. I can swim perfectly in most styles. However, I cant tread water so I can't stay afloat. Because of this, I cant swim with my head above water, I have to completely submerge my head to be able to do so. Which really sucks because wat good is knowing how to swim if you cant swim in deep water because you have to stand on something in order to get up and breathe. Ive been trying to learn it but my body just sinks. One time I accidentally jumped into the deep end of a pool and good thing i can swim and managed to hold my breath long enough to swim my way under water to the shallow part. It's aweful. My ultimate dream is to be able to tread water and just stay afloat. I dont enjoy swimming, I just do it because its the closiest thing I can do to tread water, and enjoy the ocean.

    I took swim lessons for 6 years and I still can't do it. i just don't float. I did what the lady says in the video and I still find myself sinking. I eventually quit just assuming I couldn't do it. I tried to learn it again but still can't do it. I've tried what she says and it simply just doesn't work for me. Can some people simply not float, or at least have it so hard that it's almost impossible? I would assume body type, and the amount of air you can hold in are a factor in the difficulty level but I don't know. Nobody in my family can swim except for my brother and he can barely do it himself. I don't know if it's a coincidence or if it's genetic or what. If someone knows can they let me know? I can't tell you the amount of people that have tried to teach me and just couldn't do it. Needless to say, it's very frustrating for me.

    • @sobhanksb2
      @sobhanksb2 10 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      I was able to do that, but I feel one needs to swing arms rapidly to support net body weight. I couldnt achieve constant float level as shown in the video but keep oscillating during which I adjust my breathing. There are several other videos on sculling.

    • @Elliottoes
      @Elliottoes 10 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      TheLivewire18 Livewire, it's one of the hardest swimming techniques to teach, because a good, competent, non-exhausting technique for treading water is quite sophisticated.
      Most of the buoyancy comes from the arms, so Sobhanhsb is right that you should try to practice sculling at first till you're quite competent (on your back: head-first, then also feet-first). If you'd like, I can later explain to you how you can add in the kick (I would suggest a different kick to the video).

      I'm 13 and I barely know how to swim. Whenever I jump into a pool, I have to swim up and swim out to the ladder or steps because I don't know how to tread water. If I had to swim in a place that's like 20 ft then I'd probably die. I can float but that's basically it☹️😔

    out of the water and in shallow parts but I struggle in the deep.

      Just tell them you can't, you aren't the only one. I was one of them, I've taken swimming class in the summer and I can now say that I have mastered the breaststroke and staying afloat in general, which is the key to learn every other strokes. It took me only few weeks to stay afloat, another month to master propelling technique, and recently "mastered" (not an official technique, but I can stay afloat without swimming) treading water and the breaststroke, which is my opinion the easier stroke to master than the freestyle, it is more intuitive than the freestyle.

      +Kevin Yu I feel you. I was taking swimming lessons once and we'd finished early for the day, so we played a game. It was a game where you had to float, get out of the water or go down to the bottom. Im not a very strong swimmer and DONT know how to float very well.... she kept telling me to go up and down and never out of the pool and wait. Eventually i got so tired i started sinking and panicked. I (as horrible as this may sound) "hitched a ride" of someone else and they started to go down as well. i knew i was going to drown because everyone else had gotten out of the pool out of fright and my teacher wasn't climbing in to save me. as the body will do when it starts to panic in a situation like that i got a rush of adrenaline and shot up and did a huge push and got my self out i had so much water in my lungs if i stayed in there for any longer and i would of pass'd out and drowned. To this day i still dont know how to float and even make up lies about why i cant float instead of telling people my story. But 5 and a half years later, i have learned how to swim 25m un-aided. Hopefully i can soon learn how to swim for longer and even float!

    My dad taught me how to swim by just putting me in beside him. He said I sunk but then I struggled and got to the surface, and he helped me from there. He just let me learn by experience, either sink or come up to the surface. I'm sure if he noticed I was down too long he would have got me....Maybe? lol. But yeah, that's how I learned. Also I had to do a lot of training in water in the boy scouts as well...So that helped im sure.

    Basically every human being can swim, but the fear of drowning in water keeps him away, because humans are smart and clever!!!!
    When I was learning swimming my coach trained me to hold the side of a pool i was asked to kick the legs. Then came the rope, it was tied to my waist and thrown me in the pool from one side and I kick the legs and managed to reach the other end, but after two three attempts in the last one he just take out the rope and throw me in the water, I was very smart!!! ha ha.... it's nature I thought the rope is there but in fact he pull out the rope and I swim to the other end thinking the rope is tied to my body...the guys who mastered the smimming they gave me good dips in the water I friegtened and drank some water too. After that I became a good swimmer and used to hold breath for longer time under water. Then I trained my brothers and one of my friend too.

    WHAT IF YOU NEED TO SWIM IN THE OCEAN?!?!?

    • @Varia928
      @Varia928 9 ปีที่แล้ว +33

      depends on the ocean, but generally, you tend to float more due to the higher salt content. Watch out for sharks and other animals though.

    01:42 - Instructions not clear. If you're already dead by drowning, you can't really grab onto anything.

    Usually I just flap my arms under water like I'm trying to fly.
    Yeah, that's right. Wily Coyote taught me how to tread water.
