The key to swimming with less effort is to be so relaxed and comfortable in the water that you think you could literally take a nap, floating on your back, as if you were lying on a comfy water bed. Keeping a lot of air in your lungs is a key, so watch how you breathe. Air in lungs, you go up, exhale and you sink. To move in water, you only need to wave your hands a little bit. You don't need to move your arms in formal strokes that tire you out. If you get tired, just float in place and rest. Be patient and don 't worry about going fast. If you learn to relax enough, you could swim for days, if you needed. If you are in weeds, just float on your back, keeping your body near the surface, patiently untangle yourself a bit at a time, and inch your way through them. If you're not good at this, stay away from any areas with weeds, but if you are good at this, there are no weeds so thick that they stop you.

I was a competitive swimmer from the age of 8 to 18. I can tell you that there are two critical skills in swimming that are hard to teach. 1) the pull: when your hand enters the water with your thumb slightly down and your elbow relaxed, you pull the water about 3-4 inches under the midline of your body in a slight S pattern and when your hand passes your navel you use your triceps to push all the way down. Pulling the water deeper, say 5 or 6 inches from your body is inefficient. If you master the pull, and it takes strong lats and endurance to do it, your body raises up and glides through the water with less resistance. 2) Pull/Kick coordination. This is fabulously difficult to teach. When you pull with one hand, you emphasize your down kicks with the opposite foot (kick harder and slightly deeper). This coordination generates great power between opposite hand/foot at the same time and keeps your body level, reducing resistance.
If done correctly you should get the dip in the water where your mouth is when you turn your head to breathe, another bonus since you don't have to turn your head as far. Ive tried to show this to people over the years. Very few are able to adjust their technique to do it.

I struggled with my horizontal balance. Your video explained the science behind each step better than my instructor. Seasoned swimmers do not understand the short and sudden panic of not being able to get air between strokes. My instructor just told me "you'll get used to it". After 20 lessons plus some solo training, i still didnt "get used to it".😂

I learned something from hand balancing training that applies well to swimming. Use a softly blown up swiss ball to practice front/back body balancing. Position your hips roughly in the middle of the ball. shift your weight forwards enough so you legs are raised off the ground, now leave just one arm lightly touching the ground and stretch the other arm forwards mimicking the freestyle position with your eyes looking down and the arm roughly brushing your ear lobe. Now slowly try to get to a point of perfect balance rollng your weight onto the hip that is the same side as the oustretched arm and slowly releasing more weight off the grounded arm and coordinating the leg action and hip roll. Then switch sides. As you get more skilled switch sides quicker from one hip to the other until you get it better.

Great series and as I feel getting relaxed with breathing and body position is so fundamental at start. I often know what I need to do but with swimming it is often so hard to visualise and achieve the subtle changes and repeat to improve. Your clearer explanations and excellent drills (especially dryland with emphasis on necessary flexibity and strength) is the way forward 👍🙏🏻

To many of us, video like this would be the most informative way to help beginners to improve step be step, as the “Aaron guy” is perfectly representative in terms of demonstrating how repeatedly swimmers struggled to correct our mistakes, or, instincts. A success in anything, including swimming, doesn’t come right after “knowing how”, but with practice for hundred times. Keep report the process and we can all learn from it! swim fast!

One of the missing things I've found is useful is how you can control buoyancy by holding air in your lungs. If you hold air in your lungs you will naturally float which is why you slowly breathe bubbles as you swim. It also helps get past the fear of drowning as you get more comfortable floating in the water with just holding air than fighting to keep yourself with your arms and legs.

Awesome! This reminds me of my initial swim test back in 79 when I was training for my SCUBA classes. Obviously one has to be able to swim before donning diving gear so our test was in a pool. To the point, one of my classmates, a native Hawaiian, was so impressive in his swim technique(s). He made it look so easy and effortless. He was gliding almost on the surface it seemed, reaching some pretty fast times in the back-and-forth swim observations. Yes, he was the teacher's pet and we learned much from his "instinctive" style. I guess if one is born and raised in the ocean, one learns how to swim efficiently. He was better at teaching and coaching the swim than our instructors. BTW, we nicknamed him AQUAMAN!

I can't sink 😅 (at least not as long as I am awake) . I can float (straight/ horizontal body position) without using my arms nor legs; endlessly and effortlessly. On my belly & back.
People call me Mermaid when they see me in the water. Allegedly I also have a beautiful crowl technique, many swimmers told me. I'm a smoker for 20 yrs now 😞 & I take my breath after 7 strokes, no problem.
I had lived on a tiny island as a kid. Always thought it must have something to do with it, haha- but many coasters/islanders can't float nor swim very well, so... it doesn't make sense either.

I'm definitely an AAron. I used to be able to float easily when I was fatter, but it seems that my legs are somehow so dense now that my legs always sink no matter what. However my upper body still floats. And my technique sucks. So this video was super helpful.

I needed to say: I FEEL YOU ARON! Hahah omg I've been through all that, but the video is DEFINITELY one of the best from the best TH-cam channel for beginners swimmers ❤ I would definitely love to try the app cause I feel so related to all you guys say. I've tried the breathing technique before, but it still feels a bit hard to have half of my face under water and breathe just through this small opening of the mouth. I feel I want to grasp all air I'm able to not to drawn hahah. Looking forward for the next videos and for the app, of course! *-*

Well I'm somewhat an Aaron myself. 😆 It's incomprehensible how everything is exactly just like you said. Except I have a fear of water as a bonus. Other than that, I really tense when I swim. I usually have sore muscles after each session, like really sore. And yeah, I can bearly swim a little without stopping. I usually panting after few meters of swimming, thus I feel I need more air than I can take while swimming. It's certainly not as easy for me as everyone else.

My swimming coach taught me in the same ways as mentioned in the video and I am doing better now. Swimming needs your body and mind to stay relaxed otherwise the fear of getting drowned will not let you learn.

Things I learned as a free style swimmer:
    1. Try to kick as little as possible. too much kicking tire you down quickly. Kicking also create a resistant to the momentum you create from your previous arm swing - that reduce your efficiency.
    2. Try to synchronize your kick with your arm swing. When swinging your right arm, kick once with your left leg. Do the same for the opposite.
    3. Keep your head as low as possible under water, only comes up when taking breath. Keeping your head low will help balance your body which cause your leg to sink. This way you need less kicking to keep your legs afloat.
