1987 Rastan Arcade Old School Game Playthrough retro game
Rastan, originally released as Rastan Saga (ラスタンサーガ?) in Japan, is a fantasy-themed side-scrolling action game originally released for the arcades in 1987 by Taito and later ported to various platforms. The player controls a barbarian warrior who has embarked on a quest to slay a dragon. While on his way to the dragon's lair, Rastan must fight hordes of enemy monsters based on mythical creatures such as chimeras and harpies.
The controls of Rastan consists of an eight-way joystick and two buttons for attacking and jumping. By using the joystick in combination with either buttons, the player can determine the height of Rastan's jumps, as well as the direction where he swings his weapon (including downwards while jumping). The game uses a health gauge system along with limited lives, although certain obstacles (such as falling into a body of water or being crushed by a spiked ceiling) will instantly kill Rastan regardless of how much health he has left.
There are a total six rounds, each consisting of three areas: an outdoor scene, a castle scene and a throne room where the player must confront the stage's boss. The backgrounds of the outdoor areas feature broad landscapes with changing sunlight effects with detail. The game's bosses (names according to the MSX2 version[1]) consists of Graton (a skeletal warrior who wields a halberd), Slay (a demonic swordsman who can sprout wings), Symplegades (a wizard), Laios (a dragon knight), the Hydra (a five-headed snake) and the final boss, the Dragon.
The player can pick up any item by touching them, as well as new weapons by striking them with his current one. All the weapons and power-ups picked by Rastan will be equipped only for a limited time. When Rastan picks up any equipable item, an icon will appear on the lower right corner of the screen as an indicator of the item's effect until it wears out. Rastan can only wield one weapon at a time (which consists of a mace, an axe and a fireball-shooting sword in addition to his standard sword), as well as only one type of protector (a shield, a mantle or a body armor), but other items (such as the necklace and ring) can be worn at the same time. There are also jewels that gives out bonus points, as well potion bottles that will restore or deplete the player's health depending on the color. The rare golden sheep's head will restore Rastan's health completely.

I was such a huge Conan the Barbarian fan when I was a kid in the 80s this game was the closest thing to being Conan as you could get.One of the coolest soundtracks ever made for a video game too.the arcade and spacie parlours were like a shrine for kids growing up.we would walk 2 hours to the city to play one game and then walk home.kids these days don't even know what it's like to have to wait in line just to play your favorite game.everyones coins lined up on the screen waiting for their turn, hoping the guy in front of you doesn't play like a beast.good days and great memories.

Also, the parts where the music gets loud and crazy, is when some arcade operators would have it turned on so a bunch of bats come swarming out.
This looks like it was on easy mode... which is why i think this ending didn't have chicks with him, right?

Their is a certain charm that every Taito game has. Even though some of their games lack the finesse in crisp graphics and detailed sprites that Konami, Sega and Capcom had, they sure made up for it with well balanced games. That will all changed when they made the 32 bit F3 system to compete with the Capcom's CP System and Snk's Neo Geo.

I remember as a kid going on holiday with my parents, the holiday park we were staying had a 'play room' for the kids which had a few arcade cabinets. I cant remember the others but I remember Rastan fondly. For that week I became obsessed with wanting to go and play it. Constantly asking if I could go to the room to play it and pestering my dad for change. I remember how loud and exciting it was. One of the older kids beat round 1 once with me and some of the other kids gathered round in complete awe lol.
I miss the old days of arcades. Where it was always a privilege, an event to actually get to play a machine, usually you'd just stare at them for ages watching the attract mode go round and round asking your parents for change, only to be told no time and time again lol.

Especially the Teal-green colored gargoyle. I wanted his Green colored sword the most cause it was so cool not being metal colored but Teal colored. Too bad after you beat it, you couldn't start over as your choice of the Adventurer or normal version of Rastan or the King, old version that's sitting in the throne in the story at the beginning. Playing as King after would be awesome as a reward for beating the game.

Rastan has glitchy as hell damage algorithims. If you swing your weapon while in the air, you do four to five times as much damage. Note the battle where he dies against the Hydra over and over and then kills it in a 10 second random ass pull in the end. You can confirm this easily on the first boss by jumping and attacking in the air.
      Balanced, Rastan is not.

I wish they would remake this game and release this on ps4 or something. Game was amazing. Amazing music too. Spent so many quarters on this game as a kid.

after so many years i think it deserves a pc rewrite better graphics and so on would make this game epic as sin retro games like this i can see with better graphics just stay
    to its roots
will also say this one would def go into my top 20 retros back from the 80's possibly one of my top 10

OH WOW! Thank you for posting! This brings back so many memories playing this in the local pizza shop as a kid. I loved this game and I remember it being super hard. I don't think I ever beat it. I thought there was a few levels before the one that starts in this vid but I'm probably wrong.

I only ever made it too 6:37 in the arcade. That part was pretty tough as you had to know what to do, or forever die upon that puzzle right there. A very hard game, that would eat my lunch money.

I have very fond memories of this game, growing up as a kid getting dragged to the grocery store with your parents was only fun if the had video games over by the checkout. I remember begging my mother for quarters to play this game over and over every time we went, I never got good enough to finish it. Is there a home version of this out there? I would love to play it again :)

Get a PS2, Xbox or PSP and you can play it arcade perfect. PS2 and Xbox have Rastan on the Taito Legends package, and PSP has Rastan Saga on Taito Legends Powered Up. Be warned that the PSP version is the European version, which is considerably more difficult, although it does contain a few cutscenes that aren't in the US version.

Classic game with a classic soundtrack! I wish I could walk as smoothly as Rastan does! ;)
