  • When we left Raleigh, we had plans for an extended road trip. We've since change our minds. As we got into full-time RV living, we realized that we really loved the lifestyle!
    So, we've decided to sell everything in storage and fully embrace full-time RV living!
    Watch this video to see our somewhat emotionally challenging experience, as we try to let go of our attachments to our stuff.

    Downsizing feels great! We sold everything except a few sentimental things that we were lucky enough to have family hang on to for us.

    You were going to settle in CA?! Glad you changed your mind. Beautiful state to visit but who would want to live in that mess of a state where they tax you to death and everything is so expensive!!!!

      Lol. You sound like my Dad 😆 He tells us every day all the reasons we don’t want to move there! We’re not counting it out yet but who knows where we’ll land.

      @@TheRoadLessTraveledShow watch the documentary called minimalism lol it gave us inspiration and a boost to get rid of things easier.
      Usually we seperate things in categories and ask ourselves a few things.
      Donate, trash, or keep?
      Then you narrow down your keep pile to.
      Is it a necessity or is it a want?
      Then you ask the question when have I last used said item? If you haven't used it in the past 3 months then donate or throw out because if you haven't used it then u will never and you won't miss it.
      Make digital copies of paperwork and toss those ( excluding very important documents).
      We cut down and even took digital photos of all physical photo books as well.
      Things that are close to the heart string are 10 times more challenging to move on from but if you do one thing a day it helps.
      Hope that all helps make the process easier.

    We are about to do the full time lifestyle and have a storage unit- we will come back to the unit at some point but I think we will probably be in the same boat once we come back- we will probably end up selling/donating a lot! I think it helps to start by leaving it in a unit and giving it time to sit there so we realize we don’t need/want it like we originally thought

      That worked for us. It helped release some of the emotions I had around our stuff. I’ve even started looking through my clothes and after trying some on, I have no idea why I kept them! Best of luck with downsizing!!

    Yay!! Congratulations!! Downsizing was challenging yet so rewarding!! I enjoy your videos. I'm a full time solo empty nester. Keep up the great videos! Cherish every moment with your kids. Soon you as well will be empty nesters. Kids will talk about adventures camping more than time in sticks and bricks.

    Hey ya'll, we are Shion and Matthew. We just came across your channel. We just sold our house and our temporarily living with family in NOLA until we find our RV to live in full time! We had to down size and we still have a storage unit. We think the hardest part of down sizing is the sentimental things, especially the things that were attached to a loved one that had passed away. We are hoping with time that we will be able to let go of more stuff! Thanks for sharing! :-)

    • @TheRoadLessTraveledShow
      @TheRoadLessTraveledShow  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi guys! Time is definitely helping with the sentimental items but there are still a few things we’ll hold on to. If you want/need to keep a storage unit, then go for it! We’re thinking of visiting NOLA early 2021. I used to go all the time but Steve’s never been. Do you think it’s worth a visit with COVID?

      @@TheRoadLessTraveledShow We believe most things are open, you just have to wear a mask and capacity might be limited. Most restaurants that we have visited are open. We are even able to go to on campus church services right now too! We did some Christmas driving tours to look at lights. We believe we heard the zoo and things like that are open too. We really have not gotten out and done too many things but we have not heard of them being closed either and you know with COVID things are always changing but I would just check right before y'all come and if there are certain attractions y'all want to see, then check the attractions website just to be sure. Hope y'all are able to visit! :-)

    Another friend of mine will be going on an extended road trip to try the minimalist lifestyle with their family. They head out in January. It is great seeing people live a life they love and spending more time with their families. Thanks for sharing your journey.

    Watched your most recent video and wanted to check out your pod experience. We love our bikes. Never hit the road without them. The first one you sell is the toughest one. Hope the butterfly made it. Following your adventures on Instragram as well. We're hoping to be prepping for our fulltime life sooner than later. Big thumbs up from a small content creator. 👍

    you're doing great with mindset and actually purging!! One thing I would say strongly - if you LOVE a certain something - ESPECIALLY if it has sentimental value (and so soon after losing your mom - my condolences).. then as I said a few times "I'm just not ready yet" and gave myself permission to find a way to keep it. After some time, I found that I WAS ready to let some of the items go... I realized I'd rather keep the memories than the stuff. .. .. (funny/not funny story - I had a china cabinet from my grandma and felt it was a burden to keep - but wasn't ready to let it go. As we were moving it to a friend's for storage, it fell and broke in pieces. Welp. suddenly, I was ready to let it go. its just a thing. 😊.) .. Also, we thought we would sell a bunch - but ended up giving tons to a young girl who was saving for her wedding. She was floored at all the good stuff to sell. She was blessed - and so were we!

      I can’t tell you how much your comment means to me. The funny thing is that my mom literally had two pieces of crappy furniture (she was an ultra minimalist) but like you said “I’m just not ready yet”.

    I’m trying to get rid of stuff too. It’s slow-going. I had a garage sale for the first time in my life and stuff didn’t move like I thought it would. I’m starting to put stuff on marketplace and offer up, but that’s slow too.

    My wife and I are currently starting over from scratch. Let me tell you.. it is expensive if you need new and not used. Just think about each room in the house you will settle in and itemize each item you will need :( cheap storage can be a viable option.

    • @TheRoadLessTraveledShow
      @TheRoadLessTraveledShow  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Solid point. It would be if we didn’t have to store it and haul it cross country. No doubt we’ll buy a lot of used stuff whenever we start over. Are you buying things one at a time?

    Girl! Get you a cheap Walmart bike, test yourself first to see how often you bike, if it’s a whole lot, invest in a better one, if not much, then you didn’t lose too much money in it.

    • @TheRoadLessTraveledShow
      @TheRoadLessTraveledShow  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You make me lol! Can you tell I overthink things? The inventory at Walmart is slim and Targets bikes were $350! Now I’m looking at Facebook marketplace.

    Look at market place for a bike. I couldn't imagine spending that much on a bike, but that's me.

      Thanks for the suggestion. Jen still hasn't gotten a bike. It hasn't been a high priority for her. I guess the weather has something to do with that, but now that spring is approaching, we should probably get back on that. :-)

    Sacramento of all places??? You must know someone there, becasue that's the last place you'd want to live in CA. Try Carlsbad and Encinitas!

    Congratulations on the down sizing. A couple things...If your going to settle again, isn't it more cost effective to hang on to a few of the larger furniture pieces so you don't have to repurchase in a year or so? Here is the other end of the spectrum. Why not just donate everything to Good Will or something similar and write off the donation on your taxes. You can put a premium on the value...Hey, just trying to help Steve out. ;) -Paul

      @TheRoadLessTraveledShow  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the input....especially for Steve! 😆 We feel fairly confident we’ll be out West when we settle so between storage and shipping, it probably doesn’t make sense. Good thought on donating. We may get to that point with some items.
