There is an old meme back in the GGxrd days where there was sooo much bs to learn that it was like an entire essay and study just to learn a character, and once you figure out all of it or thing you got a good understanding ,that is when someone goes "okay, now learn that on the opposite side. " I think this applies to every fighting game, but Tekken probably is the king of this
a ton of people only play left side and it's gotten worse overtime with casuals too since you can always go left in the more recent tekkens. not necessarily an advantage, just a muscle memory thing as the result of neglecting to learn how to play both sides
Yeah I think a ton of people only really play on the left side, especially casuals. I'm honestly also a bit guilty of not practicing right side enough. I'm not terrible on the right side or something, but I'll occasionally drop combos on the right side that I pretty much never drop on the left side. And it's cost me enough matches unfortunately. I think I just gotta do what TMM said, just force yourself to play on P2 side for like a whole month so that you get used to it. It's painful but you will thank yourself later for sure when all the effort pays off.
@@disruptor6550I'd say I'm a relatively casual player (teal ranks) and I swap over every session to get the most out of every character. Rather than just focusing on winning, I want to learn tekken in and out, left and right side so if I get thrown online or play 2p side on local I'm not completely hopeless. Being proactive in learning essential functions is key to enjoying any game in my opinion.
I always thought it was due to the fact that, when going through the offline content, the game automatically assume P1 is left side, and because of we start on the left, we get used to left sides combos and such, our muscle memory has been intengrated, make in it a little harder when going to the right side, which mirror the D-pad directions.
Everyone is talking about wavedashing and backdashing and muscle memory on one side over the other, but for me it's the sidestep from crouch issue. Glad to see a major Tekken influencer trying to draw some attention to it. Imagine having actually unbalanced mirror matches in your fighting game in 2023.
He's right about that, but it's a concern only for Kazuya, but even then Kazuya has options to shut down SSL and SWL, Heihachi doesnt rely on big 50/50, and if he does use moves like db2, SSL isnt a problem for him, you can step Hei df1 after f4 with a SSL, but you can't step his jab, and DVJ doesnt have f4 style move so he's not concerned TMM just trying to exagerate Kazuya's weakness to SSL and playing P1 being a counter which is true but again only a Kazuya problem here
In Street Fighter it's completely different. It doesnt matter which side you choose cause you will always change position with your opponent by jumping or by getting thrown(or getting them thrown) and since each character has like 30 moves so it's a whole lot easier to use them in any position as long as you can use them.
As a longtime casual Mishima pad player I always found it to be easier to do the inputs on the right side. Back then I would play Mishima on the right and the rest on the left, which I was overall more comfortable with. But with T7, I got serious and learned about Korean Backdash. Now realizing I have to do the input in both direction, I made the full move to the left.
Absolutely. I've always been a 1p player but my wave dash on 2p might be 3x the speed. But now I can do consistently pewgf launch from df+2 I'm happy just sticking with 1p now
Odd...I'm used to the P1 left side being favored, to the point that some people wouldn't even play on P2 right side Always figured that was due to left being pretty much the default side
I started playing Tekken when Tekken 7 season 4 came out. Played on P1 side to learn KBD and electric. About a year ago I decided to start playing on P2 to learn KBD and electric as well. Since I switched, I find my electrics more consistent and KBD faster on P2 than P1. I play pad and main Hei, Kaz, and Paul
Dragunov is another example of a character that has an advantage on the player left side. His down 2 is neutral (0) on hit and it forces crouch on the opponent and it puts Dragunov in crouch too. Now the cool part is that like you mentioned MainMan is that Dragunov can sidestep into the background, so he can do it to avoic whatever retaliation the oppone t might try such as a dick jab or a while standing move. You have no idea how many dick jabs and while standing 4s I have sidestepped after hitting down 2 and whiff punishing them with a df2 launcher into a full combo. It's like a very common flowchart with us Dragunov players. Now as for the opponent who is on the right side, since they can't sidestep to the left out of crouch, they are forced to take whatever Dragunov does from his crouching position. If he tries a ws4 and the right side player trues to sidestep, it will fail. Same logic applies if the script is flipped. If Dragunov is on the player 2 side, he can't do much after hitting down 2, but the opponent who is now on player 1 side can now have more defensive options like sidestep left and even be able to hit Dragunov with some while standing moves even if right side Dragunov tries to sidestep after hitting down 2.
@@HeySeanold Oh, right. Almost forgot. Well...let's just say hypothetically offline like at a tournament or just simply playing at home with friends or family. Now the story changes.

As mishima I started playing P1 with T7 to force myself to learn that side, but also because it looks cooler than P2 side, reminds me of playing T2 by myself as a kid
I exclusively play the right side in every fighting game. Tekken was my main game as a kid and everyone and I mean everyone I played with it always wanted player 1 so I just stuck with it. Even in Mk/SF and online Tekken 7 I play p2 since that’s what I’m use to.

5:46 you just can't do that because you're a stick player, keyboard, hitbox and mixbox, even pads can do that, but since on stick you can only point to one direction at a time, it's physically impossible for stick players
for sure, legit mishima players are proficient on BOTH sides. If you're only good on the P2 side, and then all of sudden become a retard when you switch sides in the middle of the round, then you're just at a huge disadvantage. I've been playing on P2 for many years, and it might be because I find back-forward inputs easier on that side as a Lee player. Slides are also easier for me on P2 side.
Thing is I used to only play on the right cause i main mishima. I recently switched to left since the backdash was better. Eversince I made the switch Ive actually landed more electrics backdashing rather just being faster
Funny enough, I play better on the right side using a controller. My electrics and wave dashes are more consistent but when I switch to P1, it feels like I can't do it anymore.

I started playing tekken for the firt time on my life the last year and i started player 1 kazuya, so i feel like i have a consistant wave dash, electric and backdash on both sides
Not if you're playing with a keyboard or a controller, in my opinion. And I only mostly play P1 side a lot, one reason because PSP in Tekken 6. However, it's all just how anyone is used to, we'll just have to train so we get used to playing both sides. And as you said that P1 side is obnoxious, just like Chess: one side always have an advantage when both are equally skilled and experienced. XD
In my opinion stick is not worth it for newer players. Costs too much, has a steep learning curve and is quite quirky. You can get amazing execution from a 15 dollar logitech keyboard without the wear and tear to your wrists and the monetary investment.
True but stick is also more fun. It feels like you're literally "holding" your character with your hand. It's like playing with an action figure if you know what I mean. Motion inputs feel more "real" too.
You can get dirt cheap fight sticks and just swap out the parts. Quanba Q1 I've been using for 10 years now with the Madcatz SF4 stick parts, only costs 50 bucks for the stick now. May not be the most luxurious thing, but you can get one fairly affordably.
I always play left but i can't do the wavu 😅 and also because im the older brother, my bro plays right side and he has really good movement even for joystick standarts
I don't understand what it is about Tekken that makes me do so badly on the p2 side, like i have no problems playing KOF and SF on either side but when it comes to Tekken i just freeze up
Do you play on a hitbox? Because there are things that are harder on P2. Like KBD and wavedashing. Reason being you use your ring finger for "left" and your pointer for "right". Unless your a guitar/piano player, you'll struggle with using your ring finger.
I think its a controller issue Im on keboard and if I was to play on left side I would need to use my ring and pinky to wave dash But that is much much harder than using your middle and point which are the fingers you use on the right side
I play mishimas with keyboard, I only play left side, but when i play right side is awful, i can do electrics but my wavedash sucks, sometimes I even miss the input, I can link a max of 2 or 3 wavedash on right side
i have the same problem in tekken AND street fighter damn i cant even have consistent backdash on p2 and cant anti air dp on street fighter.. i might start playing p2 more like you
Idk wtf these two response were supposed to be. It might just be a Sanwa with a Bat lever, just because I know he's been using Japanese balltop for as long as I've been following him. But that's just my guess.
i like how tekken community is so used to make stuff more difficult than it is cause they forever play with akward controller, meanwhile me with keyboard: execution? wtf is this, just spam electrics
I mean, for me i prefer P1 is because is so easy to execute some of the combo, such as mishima combo, cuz i using Mixbox, so i using my point and middle finger as my main finger.
you say p1 side is mishima killer, so you play online with a friend and both of you pick p1. What's gonna happen? Will both of you be able to step each other?
U can side step left as player two while being hit but its extremely hard if not impossible to do while in action aka a pvp match because it isnt a normal side step u have to be spamming the hell out of the d pad / stick and ur lucky if it even works then and hope u still dont get hit because the timing was off xD

I don't understand what it is about Tekken that makes me do so badly on the p2 side, like i have no problems playing KOF and SF on either side but when it comes to Tekken i just freeze up
This can be resolve easy, play with hit box or with keyboard if you are on pc.
Do you play on a hitbox? Because there are things that are harder on P2. Like KBD and wavedashing. Reason being you use your ring finger for "left" and your pointer for "right". Unless your a guitar/piano player, you'll struggle with using your ring finger.
This video understands me 100% i cant play Mishimas from the right its hard to perform EGWF
Practice makes perfect.
I think its a controller issue
Im on keboard and if I was to play on left side I would need to use my ring and pinky to wave dash
But that is much much harder than using your middle and point which are the fingers you use on the right side
I play mishimas with keyboard, I only play left side, but when i play right side is awful, i can do electrics but my wavedash sucks, sometimes I even miss the input, I can link a max of 2 or 3 wavedash on right side
i have the same problem in tekken AND street fighter damn i cant even have consistent backdash on p2 and cant anti air dp on street fighter.. i might start playing p2 more like you
*Pros* play on the left side competitively
*I* play on the left side cause I can't do electrics on the right side
I learn something every day
Gigas on P2 side is OP
I prefer player 1 because im the big brother and i have always been player 1 🤣
as a lee player, im terrible in both sides
What lever does TMM use? is it just a sanwa with a battop or is it a korean lever?
up
Idk wtf these two response were supposed to be.
It might just be a Sanwa with a Bat lever, just because I know he's been using Japanese balltop for as long as I've been following him. But that's just my guess.
Thank god I don’t play the Mishimas. Wavedashing on P2 sounds like hell
Is that a Korean lever? Thought TMM played Japanese exclusively for some reason
I find wavu, kbd, ewgf etc to be much more intuitive from P1 side
Dude any tips for wavy like the motion
@@slurmsmckenzie. learn incrementally. Just practice one CD. Once you can do that easily and fast, chaining them together isn't that difficult
OMFG RIVAL SCHOOLS MUSIC IN THE BACKGROUND!
Seriously, I'm proud to be a sub.
what is the model of the arcade joystick?😮
i like how tekken community is so used to make stuff more difficult than it is cause they forever play with akward controller, meanwhile me with keyboard: execution? wtf is this, just spam electrics
What is your lever?
I always assumed that people that play from the right are very damaged and hurt individuals
Or left handed
I mean, for me i prefer P1 is because is so easy to execute some of the combo, such as mishima combo, cuz i using Mixbox, so i using my point and middle finger as my main finger.
P1 is the EZ mode side on Keyboard.
@@UltimateBallaPOM me too, before i using Mixbox
Wonder if that sidestep issue will be fixed in t8?
If I dont have korean lever my kbd will be much slower?
I always pick right much easier for me i remember the moves better
you say p1 side is mishima killer, so you play online with a friend and both of you pick p1.
To make matters worse u have to figure out when to hold the sidestep if it actually does work and that's completely randomized player two is cursed 😂
