    Meditation is particularly helpful when it comes to creating space between you and your thoughts, enabling you to see those thoughts for what they truly are. It’s become increasingly beneficial for helping me to recognize the thoughts that contribute to behaviors that are not helpful to producing the outcomes I wish to see in my life.

    This is so true, I finally quit smoking cold turkey during the summer using a similar method. Everytime I got a craving I just kept pushing it off. My procrastinating techniques finally paid off for once. Haha.

    Brilliant.. I follow a similar method, but this can probably help much better.. Can't wait to try it.
    I call it the marshmallow method. I saw that kids who did well in the marshmallow test looked away or distracted them with something else, until the time was up. In fact I can tell if and when a child will fail - it they look at it for too long, try to touch it etc.
    And I also read in a spiritual book that desires/ impulses are like seeds. If you don't pay them any attention - they eventually dry up like a seed that can't sprout.

    • @hansmuster4317
      @hansmuster4317 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      That's quite easy. Read the book and whenever you come across something that stands out for you write it down in your own words. At the end of the book you will have the summary. If it is still too much text, just repeat the same procedure with your text.

    This is just stress management. I recognized the leaf meditation from a book about stress. Another meditation you can do is imagine you are submerged on water and bubbles are going out from you and going up. Imagine the bubbles as stress leaving your body

    thanks for this video. i think i’ve realised i actually don’t have a willpower problem...i have huge willpower, but limited ability...when i overexert myself, giving myself headaches and exhaustion, more willpower is not what i need. this is a nice thing to realise! willpower vs ability are two different things, and depend on different things (emotion committment vs strength energy).

    About the identity fact, I'd be very interested on what you say about "The Alter Ego Effect" by Todd Herman. It's about a concept called "clothed cognition", i.e. pulling off shifts in mindset by tapping into different personas via certain triggers (e.g. wearing something). Its tagline is, "A top performance expert reveals the secret behind many top athletes and executives: creating a heroic alter ego to activate when the chips are down." I've started reading it, quite interesting.

    I got sick of reading this book. It's almost 300 pages long yet everything meaningful in the book can be summarized in 7 minutes. I feel like the whole book is just him trying to convince us to follow these steps that you described in the video. The problem is some of us don't need convincing lol, we just want to learn.

    How can we resolve the apparent conflict between ego depletion being a myth and research by Kelly Mcgonicals willpower instinct?

    • @murrik
      @murrik 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe here we can reconsider Kellys theory as something temporary, which subsides according to this one, but maybe these waves are getting stronger according to her as we move into depletion energetically

    • @hansmuster4317
      @hansmuster4317 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is no conflict. It is whatever you say it is. The power lays in your believes. What you believe most is what you will manifest. That's why most of these studies are ridiculous. They just reinforce the already existing believes in society, making it look like as if they have found out something. Which is true. But not as a law of nature, but just what the society believes during the actual zeitgeist. Free yourself from this garbage and the collective slumber, by investigating your own believes and then choose the ones that serve you better.

    Nir Eyal: Well, I know I wrote the book; but I feel like the companies are taking advantage of my book to exploit the public, so the book indistractable is my redemption!
    Me: I see...😄

    I really like your channel, and I think it saves me a lot of time from reading books. But I have a little suggestion, personally I prefer the video just summarize what we have in one specific book instead of adding your subjective information or you can add it at the final of the video. I'd like to focus on knowing what's the book. When you combine this book with other book's opinions, I feel my understanding has been distracted. The summary of the book VS you personally learn from the book, I think it's better to be distinguished. Thank you. No judgement, just my personal suggestion, I do appreciate you and your videos.

    5:14 The k-Safe is pretty weird. Here's something you can try that's even better, I'd say:
    As your "effort" pact, commit to doing some new habit you want to introduce before you do the old habit you want to diminish.
    For example, I wanted to exercise more and go on reddit less. Now, any time I get the urge-wave to go on reddit, I first do some form of exercise, whether that's 20 push-ups, 10 pull-ups, 20 bicycles crunches, 20 dips, or whatever. That way, I only go on reddit when I really want to, enough that I "earn" it by doing the thing I don't make enough time to do.
    I got the best of both worlds: I go on reddit vastly less and my arms are bigger than they've been since high-school! All without a k-Safe.
    Also... please do NOT announce that you are a vegetarian/vegan/whatever. We don't care lol
