This is all great, in theory, until your boss comes to you at 3.30pm and tells you that he's promised the client that you'd get the project finished by tomorrow morning. Then your time blocking, evening, free time, Netflix and everything else goes out of the window really fast. It's great advice. I'm just not sure it's 100% practical when I think of many of the companies I have worked for.

Eyal’s point about writing and exercise requiring conscious thought is useful. While I think that there’s a little bit of room for that to overlap with habit (as habits can require a little conscious thought, though they can require none at all), I think that for many, it may be almost impossible for those activities to become habits. However, I think getting started on them (maybe at certain times) can become habitual.

So true! Distraction often feels like it has a mind of its own. I’ve found that tracking my triggers, like in Nir’s distraction notebook, has made a huge difference. It’s like suddenly realizing the pattern behind my distracted moments-whether it’s tech or random thoughts. Also, humor challenges, like trying to make others laugh while your mind is elsewhere, can feel impossible! But combining humor with mindfulness, as suggested in the Sense of Humor Improvement Program by Habit10x, really helps. Stay curious, stay focused, and keep mastering the art of being indistractable!
It was really a helpful insight. In recent times, i was struggling with my procrastination and everything. I always instinctively knew that these "digital distractions" stem from our own unregulated emotions from within rather than from the apps on the phone. It's the inner anxiety, loneliness, fear etc. which I absolutely cannot face for more than a microsecond and therefore my hands reach my phone. Thanks for validating that. So, now the key question is: how to regulate one's emotions?! They really run wild on the inside and we are not even conscious of them due to their swiftness.

Thanks for the podcast, it really helps everyone navigate everyday life. One piece of advice that doesn’t apply to the modern world is the advice on friendships and the need to form a community. We literally know that oxytocin is the hormone that regulates social interactions, so if we need it we can simply take nasal oxytocin to cure loneliness. Trying to find people to cure a hormonal issue isn’t practical.
I have an ADHD diagnosis, and I think that ADHD as an identity can be helpful, but rather than seeing it as a set of limitations to identify with, seeing it as a set of areas where I focus my compassion helps me get past the limiting beliefs we can internalise by identifying with a diagnosis.
Nir Eyal looks amazing and energetic for 46. At 47 i still look young but so tired from 5he face from working too much 😂. I'm going to attempt these techniques he suggested. The part I think i need to work on is the feeling spent after work....My current hack is i find time at work to pursue things I want to learn and pursue so i don't have to fo it all on my free time ☠️🤷🏽♂️
One of the things I like about Tim Ferriss is he really shuts down people that push too hard for their book. Tim has literally said "Stop pushing the book so much, we will edit all of that out." We get it, you have a book, this guy couldn't go two minutes without saying "my book Indistractable" >

Thank you for the insight. However, I object to the idea that a war happening far away does not or should not concern us. It does. Especially if our governments are somehow involved, which they usually are, if you are American or European. And even if they are not, maybe there is something we can do to help. In my view, self-help, albeit valuable as life skills, should not make us more individualistic but rather strong enough and aware enough, so that both we and society can benefit from life.
The guest is Israeli American so even more shocking that he makes a comment like that! But I guess that's the view of both those governments - basically a total disregard for Palestinian lives. Disappointed in Ali's choice of guest
@@1tanz2 I was not familiar with the guest. However, I do not want to judge him hastily by his origin because that would be equally prejudiced. In fact, as far as I know, there are many Israelis who oppose the war and would rather it stopped and diplomatic solutions were sought.

If you're struggling with the motivation in the $100 example, I very much doubt you'd have the motivation to actually burn that note if you don't do it!
I agree with this but also it's much more difficult to get a diagnosis in Europe depending on the country, some countries don't even give that diagnosis which doesn't mean people don't have it. It just means people aren't being treated for it.
Everything is a desire to escape discomfort? Is that true for monks? For professional athletes? For painters? For writers? For creative people in general? Some people are motivated by learning. By their curiosity about the world. You can't just extrapolate from your understanding of the world, your circumstances, and your privilege, and say it's true for everyone.

Good point. maybe try 10 minutes rule and urge surfing in the video to identify such emotion and improve the emotional resilience.
