  • A manual signalbox which has held fascination with many enthusiasts over the years is Shrewsbury's Severn Bridge Junction. A visit here on a warm sunny day in June 1988 showcased a wide variety of freight traffic as viewed from both the station and from the busy signalbox.

My mum used to work in the Royal Mail sorting office next door to the station between 1993 and '94. She told me that the brown bridge at the north end of the station was used to transfer parcel bags that came off the trains. They'd hang the bags on hooks and a conveyor system would send them straight down to be processed. I think it was around 2003 that they tore it down but this is proof that it was there. No one I know apart from my mum remember that bridge being there but I knew it. Great footage this, always nice to see my hometown in another light, especially as this was 6 years before I came along anyway

That's my motorbike outside Crewe jct box. As the 37s run side by side you can see our old wooden cabin in the triangle. As the coal empties are leaving towards end of the video, you can just make out some pway staff up towards Abbey Foregate box. I'm one of them . Happy days back then . Mid to late 80s, as I didn't join railway till 85. 👍

This is just fabulous! Never seen any video of Shrewsbury box in action nor seen the view from it. Wonderful.
And the ‘Choppers’ living up to their nickname!
    Please keep them coming.

Loved going in all the town boxes around Shrewsbury when I was on the p/way there, especially Severn Bridge. Looks like the HEA coal train was going up to Smallshaws coal depot which was just behind Crewe Bank box. Brilliant video 👍

How i remember Shrewsbury, the gay meadow sidings out of use by now and engines parked in the bay platform and not a lot in the abbey foregate sidings !! was thinking the 20s had come from Oakengates but that is a hell of a load for what i remember Oakengates had at that time, never seemed that many wagons parked up there

Nice video, thank you for posting it 👍
The Railfreight Class 37 at the beginning of the video, 37 906, I feel sure this loco was later named Mirlees Pioneer, or am I mistaken?

@@foretrak Ok, thanks for your reply, I knew one of the 37 9s had that name but I wasn't sure which one 👍
