  • A visit to Shrewsbury, England in June, 2013. By previous arrangement with Network Rail, we toured Severn Bridge Junction and Crewe Junction signalboxes, which are situated at opposite ends of Shrewsbury station, which is located at the junction of the ex-GWR Cardiff-Birkenhead line with ex-LMS lines to Crewe and Birmingham. Severn Bridge Junction is currently the largest mechanically signaled facility in the world, with a 180 lever frame, connected to upper and lower quadrant and tilting semaphores. The box is manned by two signalmen during the busier first and second shifts, while a single man works at night. While traffic is primarily passenger trains, there are a few freights each day. Sutton Bridge Junction lies to the south of the station and controls the junction of the ex-GWR main with the Cambrian line to the Welsh coast.

I'd love to go up these boxes, I contacted their filming liaison officer but was told no despite being a train driver myself! Who did you contact? I'm going there 2 weeks today.

Really good video, shame you didn't have time to show the 4th town box. Excellent anyway.

Yes an excellent video, again a shame you did not get around to Abbey Foregate box. I went up in most of Shrewsbury boxes in my early teens in late 1960s, care of my father who was S&T sub inspector. Very different and lighter now.

David Giddins We would have liked to have done Abbey Foregate, but as it was we spent about 2 1/2 hours of our guide's time and didn't want to be greedy. He was more than patient with us as it was, as we originally only requested to do Severn Bridge Jct. and Crewe Jct. was a bonus.

on the traffic light signal what does the letter mean L M C etc

The letter plates below the signals are the initials of the signal box followed by the signal number on the corresponding diagram and associated controlling lever in the box. SBJ - Severn Bridge Jct. CJ - Crewe Jct., etc. Not sure where you got L M C.
