YES! This is the only place I've seen any mention of the DIFFERENCE IN HD FORMAT BETWEEN HIGH SIERRA AND POST-HIGH SIERRA Macs -- CRUCIAL!! Thanks a million dude!!
I’ve been trying to fix my mac since months ago, gave up and finally came back to it again recently. Nothing worked for two whole days I almost lost hope again but then I stumbled upon your video and this absolutely worked!!! You saved my life, thank youuuuuu
You sir, are a LIFE SAVER - I was factory resetting my mac to sell it and it formatted to apfs then I panicked and pulling my hair out looking for solutions, even apple support weren't helping! but here I am, thank you so much
Thank you a lot. My laptop wasn’t working. I checked for weeks to find a video to fix my laptop, and finally I found a video that fixed my laptop, and that’s your video. You saved a $1000 from my money. I think your video is amazing. Thank you so much. I would request this video if anybody needs to fix their laptop and reset it. I will subscribe, ring the notification bell, and I will thumbs up. THIS VIDEO IS AWESOME
High Sierra does “like” APFS. Its the first Mac OS version to use it and all iOS devices are formatted in APFS. If you have an SSD as your Mac system drive starting with High Sierra or later your drive will automatically be reformatted to APFS when you install the OS. Time machine still does not support APFS and so time machine backup drives need to still use Mac OS journaled. Older Mac OS before High Sierra do not support APFS as you mention. Just wanted to clarify that High Sierra does work well with APFS.
Thats exactly what happened to me now, i erased my ssd restarting with cmd+R, formated it in Mac OS extended and reinstalled high sierra surprisingly now i opened Disk Utility and the format is APFS, and there are 4 partitions, VM(no idea it takes 8Gb), 2 unmounted, and the system, I don't know how to delete those partitions and why they never appeared before, any suggestions? MBP 8,1 late 2011
@@ronaldrojas5011 one is probably the recovery partition. You can resize or delete partitions up in the menu tool bar somewhere but be careful. I’m not in front of my Mac at the moment. Disk utility has become more user friendly with Mojave and up with APFS, it’s a bit weird in High Sierra.
Easiest most straight-forward video on the problem. You have done a brilliant job in fixing this. I had exactly the same problem and this repaired it in a jiffy. Many thanks!!
Omgggg I wish I would have seen this earlier 🤦🏽♀️ I stopped using my laptop for a week, didn't know what to do. It didn't want to work at all. Thank you so much for sharing this!! LIFESAVER 😭
Absolutely fantastic!!!! I tried Catalina twice and both times a complete disaster. Apple tech could not figure this out and yet it is so simple. Thank you very, very much. A++++++
Thank you so much for this trick, it saved me a lot of time and frustration! Although I had to wait for 6 minutes until you finally revealed how this can be done...
Absolutely saved me from going insane - as I just had my hard drive replaced on my iMac and the guys didn't ask what OS to restore it to... automatically installed Catalina on my late 2013 iMac... doh! When I got it back, no way of restoring my last backup from time machine as it was incompatible with the APFS format. After many hours of trying different things I came across your post. BOOOM! Thank goodness.
I just wanted to say thanks a lot man you are the goat for me i was having such a hard time and 3 years later your video helped me a lot to figure this thing out quick simple and easy thanks man hope this video helps others
thanks for the kind words bro! im happy it helped. i first made this when apfs just came out and man i was buggin like now what?? till i figured this out.
Omg I’ve been trying to fix my laptop since last two hours and as soon as I followed u r video booom .... it’s done bro ... thank you so much ... u r amazing .
Great Video. I'm doing some significant house cleaning for myself with external drives. I'd stuck with Extended / HFS on all external drives over the years, even with SSDs because I hadn't realized the advantages of APFS. Now I'm flushing all the old formats away and going all APFS. I'm sure I would have run into this exact issue without anticipating it because I've still got an Old laptop in the mix myself, and also I'll be helping extended family members update gizmos to APFS. And, even if I didn't have this exact problem, your style was super refreshing and relaxing to watch. I subscribed. Thanks! -Shwa!
This video worked! I partitioned a 14 tb harddrive and couldnt reformat back! This really saved me from deleting a bunch of files thinking I was going to lose them. THANKS!
Watched your video but unable to solve the problem. My internal drive says Container disc1 and under edit tab, the delete APFS Volume is greyed out. When I try to erase container disc1, the name is Preboot format APFS and if I change it to Mac OS Extended journalled it says erase process has failed.
Dude. I was laughing hysterically watching this because you did EXACTLY what I did. Thank you for doing this video. I did see the "Delete APFS Volume" but didn't want to dig a hole I couldn't get out of. Thank you so much for doing this.
Hi I'm trying install Mac os Catalina to my Mac os pro 2009 as I upgraded from Mac os X El capitan yesterday to high Sierra and it worked well now today I've been trying to update to Catalina all day and get stuck trying to click on apfs its not highlighted so cant click on it I've unmounted the volume and erased but can't go any further its nilly fully installed then I can update garageband to the latest version as I'm a singer songwriter. what can I do next.
You literally saved the day - couldn't believe when I googled the problem that someone else would have had the same issue - and you have helped sooooo much. So easy to fix with your straight forward instructions (hate the terminal too). Thank you thank you thank you - you are amazing! 🤗
Thanks Gunner for the video, what a life saver!! You’ve made a disgruntled, confused man very happy in an instant, really appreciate you putting this online for all of us others struggling with this issue to resolve so quick & easily and not having to pay some tech nerd a shed load of cash just before Christmas, many thanks, Stevo (Manchester, England)
Thank you sooooo much! I've watched countless videos trying to install the Mac OS Sierra and yours did. Followed each step to the last and boom it worked, yes I had to spend over 2 hours to get installed and reset login details- so worth it. You are the king of Mac OS! Gracias.
Bro I literally just ran into this situation with my Mother-In-Law, thought I was completely hosed until I found your video. Cannot begin to thank you enough. Many, many thanks.
Been trying to download steam but couldn’t because I was on APFS format didn’t know how to switch it because it didn’t show the option thank you so much this is the exact video I needed for my problem thank you
You sir are the Goat 🙏🏽 been having this problem on my Mac Pro 10 for a week now & couldn’t find anything that worked until I saw your video Thank You !
bro this saved my life! i made the mistake with the newest macbook air and convert the file to the journal instead of the afps and then couldnt figure out how to reconvert it. so thank you so much!
7:05 at this point you will get "...disk xxxxx couldn't be unmounted because it is in use by process 0 (kernel)", so you can only do that on the external drive. Basically, once you mistakenly upgrade to APFS you cannot reinstall High Sierra (unless you have another Mac to create a bootable USB, or to move that HD there to do the recovery).
Thank you so much I just ran into the same problem literally yesterday he was trying to figure this out so now I know how to fix it thank you you are awesome!
Thanks hugely for this. After many attempts at deleting and reinstalling High Sierra on a 2010 13" mbp, I was losing my mind re why it wouldn't work but I had made the same mistake - had formatted SSD drive APFS not knowing it wasn't supported by HS. Big thanks for saving my sanity.
Thank you, thank you, thank you. I had the same problem and now I can format my spare hard drive to Journaled again. I had no idea about the Edit - Delete APSF Volume option. All the best.
Im getting tired for long 2 days about looking how to fix this problem, black screen on my macbook pro and finally found this tutorial, big thanks bro.. your’e save my mac qodarullah
What a computer genius! Awesome! Wonderful! What a SKILL man! (almost every 8-10 yrs old kids know these BASIC "knowledges" in my country since the school...) What a GREAT job maaaaaan! Life saver!!! AMAZING! (Next time you should show us 2x2=4!)

Somehow my MacBook Air 2015 does not like APFS. It had Mojave and it won’t let me upgrade to Big Sur since it’s asking for a firmware upgrade
