  • Earlier this week, it was announced that the Delaware Blue Hens will be joining the Conference USA and transitioning to the FBS level. While some may think this is not major news, I want to explain why this is a major move by one of the biggest schools in the northeast. This is huge for the Conference USA and Delaware. Let me explain.

This is a really smart move for Conference USA. Delaware is a small state but the UD campus is only 45 minutes away from Philadelphia and an hour from Baltimore. They have alumni and fans throughout that entire region and south Jersey. I always thought Delaware would be a good fit in the MAC. The MAC should extend offers to NDST, SDST, UNI, and Youngstown St.

    • @lawoflamont15
      @lawoflamont15 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

I think NDST and SDST are PAC members if the PAC-2 don’t join the MWC.
The MAC would have to make the decision to grow from a midwest bus league to a broader northern G5 conference. NDST and SDST would need UND/USD (maybe the Montana schools?) to accompany them to the MAC because of the travel issues and insufficient TV payouts to offset those travel costs.
Oregon St and Wazzu on the other hand, may wait out in the PAC until the MWC contract ends. If so, they’ll invite MWC schools, the PAC’s TV payouts will be high enough for NDST/SDST without needing other travel partners.

I feel a conference where some of those best big sky conference schools like Idaho Montana and Montana state merging w remaining mountain west like Fresno Boisie etc. and adding the 4 Dakota schools plus wazzu and OSU would be a very exciting mega conference. Always thought some of these conferences should merge like that to compete w the mega conferences like American and sunbelt for example. It’ll never ever happen but it’s fun to hypothesize.

The reason OSU & WSU haven’t fully embraced the Mountain West is they’re trying to maximize revenue. $3.5 million a year doesn’t cut it, nor does the $5 million Boise State gets (though time will tell if the 2 have a choice). The Dakotas are two of the smallest states. So I guarantee it won’t be direct to the Pac…
…unless the Mountain West agrees to the pro/rel concept. Then they may as well add all the remaining reasonably western FBS and FCS schools that want to go.

Delaware is an interesting one, because they can do very well in C-USA but they also would not be out of place in the Sun Belt. They could absolutely get in there, especially now that the Sun Belt is more strictly regional to the east.
The big change that I'm still waiting for at the FBS level is football only conferences. That type of decoupling would really make a lot of sense for C-USA. If they play their cards right, they can still add Some programs in all sports like Delaware, but maybe focus on adding MVFC programs in football only as they currently stand. All of the Dakotas plus Northern Iowa and Missouri State or whatever. Then focus on adding really good mid major Olympic sports where it makes more sense regionally, and kind of handle those conferences separately. I think that's the best way to expand the footprint.

As much as i love the FCS idk why NDSU, SDSU, Montana, and Montana State haven't yet moved to the fbs. I think they would do well in the MW or MAC for NDSU and SDSU. Obviously money is a big issue for transitioning but i think they could do it. I think Chattanooga, William and Mary, Sacramento State, Idaho, other teams in MVC (SIU, ND, SD), and a FCS team from Texas.

They would do well, and the Mountain west would be a great fit for them-- especially if the MW goes to relegation
I would love to see cusa and Sunbelt add teams and also go to relegation
It would incentivize winning while also giving you a chance to take a step back and rebuild if needed
And with the looks of things between big 10 and sec, it is only a matter of time until there is:
      D1 premier (basically p5 schools)
      D1 bowl (non p5)
      D1 fcs
I think having amchanlions at each level would be great and allowing for fluidity between the different levels would keep a school from having a decade of irrelevance (ie Kansas thru the 2010s or Akron thru history etc)

Good move by the C-USA, but I really hope that they don’t lose focus on their southern footprint. Delaware is on the fringes but could maybe develop a regional rival with a school like Liberty in Virginia. But if the C-USA keeps going north and goes for UMass or UConn, I’m afraid they’ll just fall apart all over again. They need to stay in the south and go for schools like William and Mary, North Carolina A and T State, Tennessee State, Steven F. Austin, Missouri Sate, or Central Arkansas. Adding schools like these could help to build regional rivalries and maintain the conference in the future.

The pool of schools to pick from is larger for the athletes but the pool of athletes did not become larger. Like I said…the talent pool is now watered down because you 130 schools that can give out 85 scholarships vs 107 schools 25 years ago. What does that do? It waters down the rosters of the middle and lower tier FBS schools…the top schools are still loaded. There may have been subsequent disapprovals. And I might be spoiled enough because my alma mater has almost every project privately funded. The school I started at also found a way not to tap student funds for the new arena in the old building, but football is complicated. I know, the Cal State system doesn’t want to be bothered.

My favorite realignments are Texas and Oklahoma into the SEC. Also I like Oregon, USC, and UCLA added to beef up the Big 10.
The realignments I don’t understand is a couple of pac 12 schools put into the ACC. Makes zero geographical sense. I’d rather they put Rutgers into the ACC because Rutgers just can’t keep up with the BIG 10.

Maryland plays a conference game at Oregon next year. I’d rather watch my Ducks play Oregon State. I know having Ohio State here will be sweet, but I question whether the cost of all that is truly worth it.
If we’re really headed to superconferences, we’d be better off with a promotion/relegation model that also allows for “cup games” (aka rivalry games) to be played on the side.
