Like you said, why would you need to get rid of one of them? My late neighbor, who owned more than 10 rifles and pistols said "Why do you need so many radios, you can only talk on one at a time?" I just laughed and said, "Why do you need a collection of more than 10 guns?" He thought for a minute, then smiled and nodded his head.

I like the 400 bigger display screen over the 500

I have the FTM400 as a mobile radio and it’s size, screen and simple controls ideal for mobile but I regard the 500 as an ideal dual band C4FM base radio partly due to its looks but also it’s extra functionality.
Biggest win is mic input on head unit, that’s what’s lacking in the 400.
Is it worth £630, ie bang for buck compared to top end handies I’d say yes 👍

And if Yaesu would introduce an FTM-550, a radio the same as the FTM-500, but with multiple configurable memory banks, I would buy it too!

I will keep my FTM-400! Hell I still have the FT-1, FT-2, FT-3 and obviously the FT-5..... Even the FT-70 is hanging around.

I agree don’t get rid of the ftm400 the 710 is an amazing piece of kit another one I would never sell like the 400. Looking at getting either the ftm 500 or the Icom id52 I am spoilt for choice. You got a good choice in radios with them yaesu’s

I've enjoyed the large screen on my FTM-400. The big control knob seems like a waste of space on a mobile. Also seems like a mobile radio using the FT-5's screen. I see no reason to upgrade. Perhaps Kenwood will have a new mobile soon. I've started to move to D-STAR and given up on Yaesu/C4FM.

My next purchase is going to be a mobile for my Tacoma truck and although I really like DSTAR I think I am going to have to go with the 500 (hand held no comparison the ID52 over FT5D allllll dayyyy except for APRS of coarse)... Being that the 400 and 500 are pretty much the same cost to date its a know brainer. CHEERS ANDY!!!

I think yeasu has the more popular digital mode, aprs and it's a lot fancier and better looking but I personally won't run anything but an icom in my vehicle. I travel so much, I am so glad I got the 5100 rather than the ftm400 because the icom near reapeater search feature like the id52 also has, has been extraordinarily useful. I am so dependent on that feature for ease of use that I'll never run yeasu until they have a feature equivalent to that. There's nothing quite like getting up early in the morning and traveling to another state and being able to hop on any of the local repeaters without ever having to spend any time programming. The yeasu and any other radio was such a nightmare, wasting so much time programming and then trying to find the repeaters when you get there was a headache too. Icom is so simple and amazing.

@@preston1614 I guess it all depends on how into APRS you are but hands down your absolutely right in my opinion DSTAR is better overall

Smartphones and everything comes everyday with bigger screens but there goes Yaesu, shorten them out 🙄, I guess will stay with my 400
